Mike is the reason this show exists. Because there are people who can be reasoned with, who will acknowledge the problems with their religion to the point of leaving it. I wish more people like Mike called in, just so that the people who host/star on this show could get a better idea of how much good they are doing.

Pascal's wager was solved by the philosopher Homer Simpson when he asked "but what if we're praying to the wrong God and he's getting madder and madder every time we do?" There's just as much evidence for that God as for one of the Christian gods, therefore there's just as much chance that not praying is a better route into heaven than praying incorrectly, and it is impossible to know how to pray correctly (which God is the right one)

@@Firedrake1313 .. No? Not for me - how would one _possibly_ be able to assess that? What if you thought you'd done all the research and you'd given it your absolute best guess but then you died and it turns out there WAS a god, but they actually wanted everyone to use their brain and logic to come to the conclusion that there was NO god, given the evidence they had provided, since that was the most HONEST answer? Or perhaps you even believed you'd had a revelation right from a god and then died and found out that you were delusional or, even more fancifully, the butt of some alien joke?

@Deren Lernsten there doesn't need to be an atheist explanation. the fact that there is no theistic explanation is enough reason to reject theism. that is not enough by itself to accept antitheism, but definitely enough to reject theism
@jamesm1580
@jamesm1580 3 жыл бұрын
@Deren Lernsten 1.) I never claimed to have an explanation for how the universe began(if it began at all)...but that's irrelevant to me not believing in any god. 2.) Atheism isn't a cult as you are already aware. People have already explained to you how an atheist is just someone who doesn't believe in any god, so I have to assume that you are acting as if you don't understand that bc it conflicts with your personal beliefs and it would harm the apparent validity of those beliefs if you acknowledged that atheism is just the logical position any reasonable human being would have to take since no good evidence for a god has been presented in human history. 3.) Again, atheism doesn't claim to have any answers. In fact, atheism doesn't make any claims at all. But you knew that already. 4.) I never said you could "get answers from lies". But I reiterate, atheism makes no claims, so it isn't possible for atheism to "lie". You seem to have a very hard time accepting the fact that atheism doesn't claim to have the answers to the universe, so to speak. It's as if you can't find anything to dispute when it comes to atheism so you create a false concept of what it actually is and then attempt to argue against that. That's called a strawman fallacy. Maybe try doing some introspection and think about why you care so much that many people are intellectually honest and admit that they don't have the answers to everything. Try thinking about where all your anger and hatred towards atheism comes from...bc you have very clearly shown those qualities in your comments. I think you might become a happier person if you come to terms with the cause for all this internal angst you are displaying.

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It is simply too painful to acknowledge -- even to ourselves - that we've been (taken.)so credulous. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back. (So the old bamboozles tend to persist as the new bamboozles rise.)” - Carl Sagan

master spade; the real question might be - have you, as an atheist settled comfortably and given up being interested in finding out the truth? The Bible says to seek Him with all your heart while He may be found. That implies the day will come when all your seeking will be fruitless. John 3 16 can lead the diligent, humble and sincere seeker to God's truth. Have a good day.

@@wwlib5390 -- I was a Brainwashed christian for the first 35 years of my life. I DID believe in the 'god' of the blibleS. I believed in him, prayed to him, defended him, and did everything I could to connect/find him. I even stopped watching the Simpsons because they made fun of him in one episode! lol!! But, nothing happened. Nothing worked. It was a one way street. I wanted to get closer to our lord and savior, so I did something radical, something too few religious people do, I actually READ the bible. I read the whole bible. Best thing I ever did!! Why? It WOKE me up!! I read all the contradictions it had!! It's full of God's Hate, Jealousy, and Hypocrisy! The first time I read it, I pretended all those Contradictions and Evil parts weren't there. I made EXCUSE after EXCUSE like the brainwashed christian I was. While reading it, I prayed every day. I still expected to "find" and "Connect" with him, ESPECIALLY after reading the parts where HE says that anyone who searches for him WILL find him. Well, I was looking for him......believed in him, prayed to him, defended him.......and did NOT find him, and remember, at that point I was a Brainwashed christian who DID BELIEVE and WANTED it to be true. By the end of the book.......I was waking up. I was getting Tired of having to make Excuses. I had questions. There were just way too many Contradictions and Evil parts to ignore. So I said "If there is a god, I would think he would want us to ask all the tough questions. That would at the least weed out all the false gods." So I read the bible again, but that 2nd time with Zero Emotional attachment, and an Open Mind, not a Brainwashed one. BOY WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! After that 2nd reading, I could no longer excuse all the Contradictions and Evil in there. I turned Agnostic. Then after more research, I became what I am now, an Atheist. All that means is I see no Real Evidence of any god. If only more people would actually READ their supposed "Holy" books instead of having those books read TO them. This quote was True in my case and for most - “Properly read, the Bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived.” - Isaac Asimov Do yourself a HUGE Favor, read the bibleS with an Open Mind. Ask all the tough questions and free yourself of the Shackles of religion.

@@MasterSpade what contradictions? I have read the Bible many times and recognize that the beginning and end also have a middle part - when you realize the whole point is to reveal God's only plan for salvation (first you have to see WHY we need saving to recognize YOUR need) then you can learn from the middle parts while you are becoming more and more like the character Jesus modeled - loving, forgiving, merciful, patient, kind, and just. Are you of the opinion that if we just shed God our society will be happy happy joy joy? The middle parts of the Bible show you that can never happen without God, our Creator and Redeemer. Thanks for sharing your opinion tho. Have a good day..

@@wwlib5390 -- You asked: " if we just shed God our society will be happy happy joy joy?" IMO, NOTHING has set Mankind back more than belief in gods. So if the Entire Human Population finally woke up to the Biggest Con Job of all Time, that being belief in 'god', then we as a Species would THRIVE!!!! IMO, when someone asks "what would we do without my god" is like someone asking "what would we do without Cancer!". Only Cancer hasn't been NEARLY as Destructive as the con of 'god'. As for Contradictions in the bibleS...first let me ask you, is the bibleS( I put an "S" at the end because when I researched it, I found out that there is no "THE" bible, there are currently 60 different versions just in English!) the Perfect word of god? Are the bibleS the law of the lord? Just remember, something is either Perfect, or it isn't, there is no "In-between".

Then somewhere along the line, religions also became a grift for profit besides a way to threaten people to do what their leaders (kings etc.) say to do based on them claiming that their god(s) gave them the authority to lead them. Religion is nothing more than a tool to influence people's behavior at this point.

It's just how we're wired-- very tribal. "This is my circle of trusted people" and when someone "violates" that trust by adopting some other god system (or simply dropping a god system), it can be hard to accept. If you think about it, our modern social structure where the tribe is no longer one's entire world (food, shelter, safety) is barely in its infancy-- I'd say we're only about 400 years out from strong tribal structure. As we globalize via technology we're getting better at overcoming these instincts that have defined us for tens of thousands of years, but it's a relatively slow and gradual process to alter such instincts.

I've heard this argument before but it had to do with evolution. The Christian said "what if God created evolution?" They had this look on their face, like boom, I got you. I just chuckled a bit and said "No. All you did was commit a common fallacy." We call that, moving the goal post. For centuries the church has denied evolution, denied science, denied planets orbit the sun. Now that we know all these things to be undeniably true. Instead of admitting you were wrong. You simply moved the goal post. You have decided to continue to believe regardless of evidence. That makes it a choice.

If you're going to claim that your god created the universe and made it look older than it actually is, the next question must be "When?". If you can claim that god added a bunch of dodgy evidence to trick us, how can we be sure that he didn't create everything yesterday, but implanted all our memories to make us think that the day before yesterday happened?

Great video! For myself I especially like what Matt has to say at around 20:35, that we have another portion of our brain that operates independent of our logical brain, which is why atheists can have nightmares of "hell" years after deconversion.

This is one of the best calls you guys have extracted from the thousands of videos that have been broadcast from The Atheist Experience. I think Mike is already an atheist but he isn't ready to come out. I live in the UK. Except for some Muslims and Jehovah's Witnesses -- coming out in the UK is not an issue. (I understand that I may be ignorant regarding other religions, denominations and sects.) Coming out from mainstream Christianity in the UK is relatively easy. If your whole life is centred around the local church and your whole family are believers then coming out is a massive issue. Sounds absolutely awful to me! The only analogy I can think of is that it would be like cutting off an arm.

4:20 "If you make a truth statement, then the burden of proof is on you". If I say that tomorrow the sun is going to rise, I don't have to provide much of a proof, otherwise than "it always did so". I have to provide a proof when the claim I make is exceptional. The more exceptional it is, the stronger the proof I should provide.

Pascal's wager makes me think Christianity is a fraud. If Christianity is valid and stands to reason, what is the need of threatening people with punishment after you're dead. Why does a loving god need to operate like a mafia boss? Why is God's ego so delicate that he can't handle disbelief? The whole thing seems like something control freaks would make up to control you.

I had it a little easier than you since I have been out of Mormonism for almost 50 years. I stayed away from any religion for decades, and then realized how much the church had changed many of its beliefs. What came out during the Romney run for President was that what we were taught at the local level (seminary and at church) was not based on church tenents. My sister is hung up on an apologetic version of Mormonism, excusing every thing and making stuff up when nothing else fits; but I just avoid talking religion with her and consider her disappointed with her life and church is all she has left, and her family is screwed up even though they grew up with the church.

I don’t think the middle ground is fictitious. I think it’s definitely possible to have doubts and shift back and forth in different situations or from day to day. If you think the probability of there being a god or gods is remotely close to being a coin flip, I’d say you’re an agnostic. An atheist is either convinced there are no gods or unconvinced that there are any, not sort of unconvinced. A theist is either convinced there’s a god or at least finds it significantly more plausible/persuasive/appealing than not.

@Deren Lernsten "Is it so hard for G0D to also create the universe in one moment to resemble an advanced age?" I do not think you get the fundamental problems I am alluding to. I will try to explain: First: If a christian devices a god that cheats and deceives in such a way, he also creates a god who's actions and motivations can not be trusted, which shakes the fundamentals of his theology. Second: What's more, this christian has accepted the fact that science is right and that he is forced to tweak and reshape his fantasy god-friend to accommodate science. This christian has accepted the subservience of his god to human science and will therefore in the future have to remake his god many more times as science progresses. This simply is an admittance of theological failure and collapse, because the christian then implicitly admits that his god is his creation, and not the other way around.
