If you have walked the Camino before, what's your typical day like? Of if you are new to the Camino, feel free to ask questions.

I walked Sept/Oct 2018 with my son. Get up, pack up and usually have breakfast if available at our accommodation. Walk for an hour or 2 then have 2nd breakfast/lunch at a village Cafe or food truck always having fresh squeezed orange juice whenever I saw it. Walk and rest for the next few hours then find an albergue, quite often we booked ahead. Showered, washed clothes most days then wandered around and nearly always found a good place to eat. Yes, most nights in bed asleep by 10. I was going back in 2020 but I quess we Aussies are going to have to wait a bit longer to fly anywhere.

Don't like a nice routine. Yes it will be a while I think. I'm thinking 2023 to have any degree of certainty. Just not sure I want to spend 24 hours on a plane till this Covid thing is well and truly sorted out!

Thank you, this was nice to hear and gave me some good impressions of what to expect. Must admit, I hadn't calibrated my water consumption level, so this was handy to know about. Great channel and info by the way, very relaxed and very informative.

Easing into it. I glimpsed a new question a moment ago, and lost it. I hope I didn't delete it. But it was something about easing into the Camino. Everyone is different of course, and we all have different ages, levels of fitness and health. As well as different 'approaches' to our Camino and what we hope to gain from it. But in general, I think we all need to ease into it. By that I mean start off at a comfortable slow pace. Not try to walk too far in the first few days. It takes getting used to the physical routine. And I've seen lots of Pilgrims have to give up and go home, because they started too fast and too long. So be kind to yourself in those early days, and 'warm up' to the day to day grind of the walking. You might not walk very far each day, but you are walking day after day, and that takes a toll on the body. So ease into it. Quite what that means is different for everyone. For me, a bit overweight and not that fit, my 'comfortable' daily distance is 20-25 kms. My max if I 'have to' is about 30kms. (though I know I'll need a day to recover due to compounding old injury) On the first few days I keep well under 20 kms. On the CF for example my first few days are generally St Jean to Orisson to Roncesvalles to Biskerreta to Zubiri to Pamplona to Uterga. Much shorter distances than most. But by Pueta La Reina I'm ready for 20-25 kms a day. On Pat's first Camino (she is NOT used to walking at all) we did something like 5 kms, 8 kms, 12 kms, 15 kms, then settled at about 20 kms per day. She 'really' eased into it LOL. Maybe an approach might be to establish your 'comfortable' daily distance, let's say 25 kms. And aim for the first 3 days to keep well below that? Works for me, anyway. Maybe others have different views to share?

Thanks for posting your experiences. In the past I have gone on Treks in Bhutan, but that is becoming less likely that I will be able to do the high altitude treks anymore, so finding out about all the different Caminos is interesting. One of the things that appeals to me about the Caminos is that it appears that Solo traveling is reasonable. It is one of the things about Bhutan that I liked about Bhutan, (even though I had to go with a tour company the single supplement was very minimal). If I felt really good I went longer and if I was having an off day I could go shorter. I have a friend who recently Ran the Primitivo in 4 days (we do lots of ultra trail runs together). While I think my first one I would like to hike, perhaps another one I will consider running it.

I wouldn't see any point in running a Camino, sorry. It's a Pilgrimage and in my mind' should be walked slowly. Alone is good. No need to agencies/tour companies..... It's not the wilderness

We were in Spain many years ago with a rental car. We found restaurants served their evening meal very late in the evening and It was difficult to get to sleep on a full stomach. If I went on the Camino and wanted to eat in a restaurant do they still serve dinner about 9 pm?
@robscamino
@robscamino 2 жыл бұрын
The Spanish tend to have a main meal at lunch time and then Yes, a late dinner. They go to bed late too! But I've never had a problem whilst on Camino. On the more popular routes like the Frances, they cater for Pilgrims. So Pilgrim dinners are often available from 6-7 pm. And there are lots of cafes/bars serving food early. I have never had an issue getting a meal. There are usually options. Pilgrims menu, Tapas, Raciones and Platos Combinados....I am normally in bed by 9pm so I 'get' the sleeping on a full stomach thing. Usually ate about 6-7 pm.

When do you think we, in Australia, be able to go to the Camino again? I originally was heading off in May 2020, then Covid so thought May 2022 but looks more like May 2023.

So hard to know really. I was planning March 21, now delayed to March 22. But I think March 23 will be more realistic. Hopefully I'll still be healthy and fit enough to do a Camino ! LOL (for those not in Australia, our vaccine roll out is quite slow, so International travel is not allowed for us yet)

I was planning October 2022 but now I feel this urgency to go next month. Ahhh!!! Decisions! I think I am sick of waiting for the world to go back to normal. It may get worse before it gets better so maybe it’s best to go now. Just random thoughts I have. I did go to Croatia during their civil war & all was fine.

Is there a pilgrim mass at night in some towns?
@robscamino
@robscamino 2 жыл бұрын
It will vary a bit. Very Pilgrim 'centric' places like Roncesvalles, yes. We have attended a wonderful mass whilst staying in a Convent in Leon for example. But in remote villages often the church is not open, or a local Priest may travel around a number of different churches. I'm not sure if there is a resource or further information you could access. Maybe others can help? Whilst I visit most of the churches along the way, I'm not a Catholic.

I m wondering money, most places take cash I hear. I guess you use bank machines and pay the extra fees for this use. As my tips?
@robscamino
@robscamino 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, in the rural areas cash is King. I would use a card when I could to conserve cash. Depending on the route you are walking, you'll find ATMs in most towns, but maybe not villages. You might want to check with your bank regarding ATM fees. These are usually a currency conversion fee (in the exchange rate) + a transaction fee. I have always used a debit card linkedin to a Euro account. I set this up with my bank in Australia. So I top it up time to time between Caminos. And when I use it on Camino, I just pay the ATM fee. Depending where you are in the World there are all kinds of different accounts and deals.
@robscamino
@robscamino 3 жыл бұрын
Tip. Use the ATMs during banking hours. Just in case they swallow your card. I carry a back up card just in case though. And a card on a backup account. And a credit card LOL

@@wowzieee Try your local bank.....most major banks offer 'currency' accounts. IT makes saving easy and fun too. Each month I throw a bit into my Euro account.
