I actually grew up on a ranch where we butchered our own beef regularly. I also grew up fishing a lot. The saltwater is going to create rust much faster than fresh water or saliva. I would also encourage you to watch a couple videos on using a sharpening stone. I haven't seen your technique used before so maybe I'm the inexperienced one here but it wouldn't hurt to watch a few butchers online do it. I love following your videos and I would love to surprise my wife with a sailing trip one day. Let me know if you ever need a couple extra deck hands for a week or two;)

Speaking as an old butcher who has worn out dozens of blades, nothing wrong with a bit of rust that a rub with steel wool wouldn't fix. Best advice i can give you riles is slow weighted strokes on the stone for best results and always use steel rather than a stone. When you steel the blade, no more than a dozen rubs are needed to get it razor sharp. You should be able to get 20-30 honing sessions on a medium steel before a rub on the stone is required. Stone = 400 grit, steel = 1200 grit. The difference a steel makes when filleting fish will astound you.

Knife sharpening 101. Place stone on solid surface coarse side up, wet or lube stone, grab knife base with right hand and near tip with left, draw (sliding to move from base to tip whilst moving up the stone) holding the knife at the edge angle (push knife away from you), repeat 3-4 times, reverse grip to get other side. Then hone edge by turning stone over and repeat on fine side. Always push edge into stone. PS a filet knife has a flatter geometry than a kitchen knife and should be flatter to the stone. Have fun!

@@gimiesome Well... not to pick on Riley but what he was doing wasn't sharpening. I have no idea what to call it (it made my eyes hurt). Either pulling or pushing, I use "kind of" a slicing motion. The key to a good edge is more about blade to stone angle than how it's moved across the stone. The idea is to pull, push, whatever, a burr on the edge (very thin and hard to feel) then polish the burr off with something like a hard arkansas stone. But yeah, circular works...

Regarding the knife sharpening, my Dad taught me to move the knife one direction only and flipping sides. Start closest to your body, and stroke the knife away from you. Begin at the base of the handle and within the same stroke, allow the length of the knife one side to be sharpened as you move the knife outwards. Repeat other side of the knife. Hope this helps. Oxidation is what rusts the knife. That's exposure to air. Put a little oil of some kind on and you'll be tip top. Salt water is a very good conductor which enables the ionization of the oxygen into the iron in the knife. Block the oxygen you'll have a nice knife. Put oil on it, it's not the salt water, it's the air. Science and stuff.

The chloride ions in saltwater help oxidize iron, so both salt water and air. Iron and steel will rust underwater. Just take a good look at those shipwrecks that they dive on if you don't believe it. But yeah, salty water and air create corrosion really fast.

@@MrFurriephillips water is a fantastic lubricant and really depends on the stone. Oil is a better lubricant for sharpenning with the right stone. The stone Reilly is using is best with water. Interesting sharpening technique, have seen it before, but learned from a butcher friend a long time ago to pull the blade and pay attention to angle on the knife, but there is always more than one way to get the job done, I have always found butchers are the best teachers for sharpening. Once again, nice videos, what a great way for a little one to get a start in life.

Beautiful opening music. Thumbs up to that musician. Best quote of SLV 178: “Butter is life.” Beautiful yoga editing. Perfect music for it. How could the word “mocha” be skewed by an Australian accent? My goodness. Mocha. Best life’s motto in SLV 178: "Judge not a fisherman by the fish he gets but by the fish he chooses not to shoot.” Outstanding picnic lunch. Gorgeous colours in it. That crab looks delicious. (Good argument for not shooting beach dinners in black and white.) It was nice to have English subtitles so we can know what your guest and Elayna said in Australian. We could have used a disclaimer warning somewhere or gone without Riley's rump action propulsion mechanism, shot from the rear, when the tender got stuck. GoPros are, apparently, the best inventions to prove not all fish stories are fish stories. Beautiful B-roll throughout. Suggestion: You both should take up video travelling blogging full-time. The guests who sailed up along-side you have the video to prove they were aboard. "They were there, SLV, we were even aboard, then we woke up and they were gone! No, really. Seriously." Outremer, we who are about to die with envy, salute you. Beautiful episode, guys.

Love the spearfisherman's philosophy :-) And your mangrove narration cracked me up, too. Another great video by my favorite sailing channel. :-)

Hey Elayna! Not sure if someone has already said this, but be careful in warrior 2 pose, if your knee extends past your foot you can hurt yourself! Make sure you can always see your toes! Ideally you want your calf straight up and down, with your knee right over your ankle :) Enjoying the vids, thanks so much!!!

Nice loved the "don't judge a spearfisherman..." saying Riley very cool Dude. And I thought I was the only one who said it was tired out when I was tired !! LOL funny . Just another great time hanging out with La Vaga.. Oh Alf what a goofy funny character he was.

When I worked on a tugboat I read a book on blades and sharpening stones. It said not to put water on the stone because it would be like a farmer plow going through the ground. I know you've seen the plow discs and how they get rounded. And remember, there are no ropes on a boat, lol. Fair seas guys
