You haven't been anywhere near the DTES (DownTown East Side) lately, have you? They had a protest 2 days ago handing out meth, crack, coke, & heroin. I was there yesterday morning and saw a young lady with no teeth tell a guy to FO and then puke on a telephone pole. If you look around at life and you ain't seeing approx 50/50 good and bad then you ain't really looking too hard, right?

Another nice mountain walk is just a quick five minute walk from Murrin Lake. Park in the Murrin Lake parking lot. Cross the Sea to Sky to the other side and walk next to the ditch. You will come upon a wooden cross sign stating g you are at the entrance to the Petgill trail. The entrance is a tight scramble up a tiny escarpment and a shimmy across a bit of granite ( best to face in to the granite if you get dizzy). Then you are into the woods and just follow the tin plates marking the trail. Pretty easy walk and I've rarely met anyone else on this trail. The view at the top is nice as is the lake.

When I was stationed in Munich, Germany in 78 [plus], we hiked in the Austrian Alps several times and used similar chains and cables on steeper inclines to stay safe along rock faces and climbs. I also remember at some points we were hearing Marmots whistling below us as we climbed which in turn drew our attention to raptors launching off the mountainside below us too. Such glorious views and memories. Thanks for bringing them back to me.

On my summer break from German university, I spent 3 months on a work and travel in BC and loved very single day of it. I met with a bunch of fellow work and travellers and we hiked the second peak of the Chief as well. The chief has three peaks with amazing views. I would recommend doing all of them. Slightly hidden of the third peak you drop down into a discrete trail that goes between the two rock faces into a super lush forests. You can follow that tail all the way to the bottom. In addition to that at the end go to Shannon falls hop the fence and have a shower under Shannon Falls. (That's what I did last time I was there)

The Van Gogh exhibit was very good. Again immersive. If you get to Amsterdam in the future visit the Van Gogh museum. 70% of the known works in one little building. Fascinating as its laid out in the order he painted and you can see the evolution of his craft. The early days were dark and moody. Nothing like the pieces we associate with his name. After the main exhibit they just have a hall with every inch of the walls covered in his paintings. Sort of after seeing the biggest collection imaginable then there is the rest which is overwhelming.

Wow, Mike. Thanks for this brilliant summer's day travelogue. Squamish again!! It's almost as popular as the Dandenong Ranges or the Mornington Peninsula here in Melbourne. And the Gogh show to top it off! Great idea from your mum. Good to see you with Nicole and your parents enjoying this iteration of the show. Much better than it was in Melbourne. You and Sprouht made we wish it was summer down here in just-out-of-locked-down Melbourne, but at least it's a nice sunny Sunday here right now and as soon as I finish this comment I'm off for a drive to the Diamond Valley Miniature Railway to see some friends I haven't had direct contact with for a while (including one who is one of your greatest fans). A couple of points to note (and I'm sure anyone with a bit of common sense will already have picked up on this); 1. GOOD THAT YOU TOOK A FRIEND WITH YOU ON A WILDERNESS ADVENTURE. The mountain climb is not for the faint hearted and definitely shouldn't be attempted alone, no matter how experienced one might be. Accidents do happen and you wouldn't like to be alone if you slipped and injured yourself. 2. DON'T ATTEMPT THE CHIEF IF IT LOOKS LIKE RAINING. Those rocks would be far too slippery to negotiate - and it's a long way down if you fall. On the positive side again, great composition for a summer's day out. Will have to check out more of Sprouht's channel when I get some time. Must go now. Stay safe and well.
