These are a variety of elevators at the Macy’s flagship store in Herald Square Midtown, Manhattan, New York City. These elevators have changed a lot overtime as well. In this video, you’ll see a main elevator appearance of before and after modernization, as well as some of the side elevators too, which already have been modernized. This was taken on Wednesday, 12/02/2020, between 4:05 PM, and 4:31 PM. This is a 2020 project.

I worked part time for macy*s Herald Square in the late eighties. The 1.5 Floor is in the Seventh Avenue Building/Section and adjoins the Mezzanine in the original 1902 Broadway Building. It used to be part of the Men's Clothing Department. The final elevator at end of video was manually operated until the early nineties I believe. I like the way they still kept the old look to that one...with the dormant manual controls to the left of the electronic ones. This macy*s never had the ladies with white gloves/hats running the manual elevators. They used their Security/Loss Prevention staff instead. I believe B. Altman had manual elevators right to the end and Lord & Taylor changed theirs to electronic by the fall of 1989 when The May Department Stores Company took over! Nice video...brings back memories!

I hate the modernization they did. No more hearing that voice call out the floor and direction upon arrival and the doors closing and they're pretty much erased the floor one and a half announcement and I miss the classic bells.

Oh, please correct me if incorrect...but I believe Seventh Avenue section of macy*s Herald Square has 17-19 floors completed between 1924-1931. No retail above the ninth floor. Office and storage space. Top two floors are likely all mechanical stuff. Book written by Robert M. Grippo in celebration of macy*s 150 years says so.

This is, by far, the only building I know with a 1½ floor.

Post modernization they simply call it floor 1.5, I believe I have been to maybe a few other places with half numbered floors but I know there are some of those half floor labelings in other areas.

Doesn't seem that busy. You could've opened up that one cabinet above the buttons and gone up past 9, assuming that those buttons worked.
