This video is the second in my series entitled "Sayings to Photograph By." This video will consider my saying “A Vertical Subject Often Warrants a Vertical Composition.” Why do so few photographers learn how to shoot images vertically or are they just uncertain when to photograph an image vertically? This video will discuss the why and how of vertical images.

Thank you Lee for all the time you dedicate to these videos. Great video! I photographed some cedar waxwings in a fruit tree at a local cemetery and I thought of your tip. I was able to shoot them vertically and it worked well for this subject! I also shot vertically a snowy owl sitting on the ground looking up towards the sky and it worked beautifully.

Greetings again from the UK! All good common sense stuff (albeit a commodity often in short supply). I've just decided to buy a used grip for my EM1ii body for this year's cricket season. Reviewing last season's images, there's a real mix of landscape, square and vertical compositions. That said, half to three quarters of my shots at any one cricket match will be at 300mm (the maximum reach on my zoom), so the benefits may be a little moot. The intended target audience and viewing method needs to be considered too. Most viewers will flip through the images on their phones so perhaps more vertically orientated shots may be desirable.

There is no doubt that smartphones, instagram stories, and facebook stories have made vertical orientation more visible! Thanks for being a part of my online community!

Thanks.... question - for vertical without a grip, do you use the camera rotated so your right hand is at the bottom instead of the top and then both elbows are close into the body?

I would break my wrist if I ever tried that! Picture T-Rex trying to pull that off and boom, that is me! It is very uncomfortable for me, but I can imagine for some that it would work!

What percentage of your wildlife pictures do you shoot vertically?
@leehoyphotography
@leehoyphotography 10 ай бұрын
That is an outstanding question!!! Love it! I went in and actually checked my statistics using Lightroom and 2024 workshop images. Now, this is just based on keepers (not counting what I have deleted), the percentage is 28%! How is that for specific?!!!

I just notice which account I used to comment. When I saw how many birds in flight you shot vertically I started wondering about how much do you use it. I have been enjoying your videos and made a few tweaks here and there based on your suggestions. My first camera was an Olympus OM 1n back in 1979 and I missed the control I had with that camera. I had moved over to shooting manual before I started watching you but you helped me figure some things out. I do shoot vertical when the subject is a vertical subject but now I'll have to practice shooting birds in flight vertically. Thanks Lee.@@leehoyphotography

I did a vertical bird in flight of an Egret when I was in Death Valley. I tried tagging you in Vero but it looks like I don't know how to do that so that it shows as a tag. The vertical pictures were easy to do of the Egret so I have learned something new, thanks.
