@@Ozzie2191 Tail wagging is a sign of 'excitement' in dogs-- which can mean joyful excitement (like their favourite person coming home) or anxious excitement (which is what we're seeing in the video). It's kind of like the way a person might pace, tap, or wring their hands when they're really anxious or agitated-- an energy outlet. Since the stimulation that's causing that anxiety (in this case, the grooming) isn't going away, it escalates to the attempted biting

We initially tried a tablet to sedate and it had zero effect on her, because of her extreme anxiety with grooming. We ended up begging my vet to groom her under anesthesia, they reluctantly agreed because they had no grooming experience. My tech got to be a very good groomer. To make matters worse my dogs kidneys were failing as her kidney disease progressed we had to change meds. My tech got so good working with her she only need a brief dose when they did her face. My dog was much worse than the one in this video. The tech at my vet had bonded with her so much that she was able to do things with my dog that I couldn’t. When my dog passed she had a tear in her eye. God bless her, without her willingness to tend to my fur baby she would have had to be euthanized. The folks that work with this babies are angels.

My shih tzu is a rescue from a puppy farm. When we got her she needed 2 surgeries in order to be able breathe properly and she had an ear infection. She's so sweet but I can't help but feel bad for her. Aside from her unfortunate genetic situation, her lfie so far so far has clearly affected her. We've had maybe about 5 or 6 years now and she's much more normal than she used to be, but she's still very quiet, careful and definitely hungry. I'm lucky she's not aggressive at all, but even if she was she was still missing most her teeth when we got her. I feel very bad for shih tzus and pugs. They're certainly cute, and generally lovely dogs, but they just don't deserve the difficulties that come with their breed.

I recently lost my own shih tzu a few weeks ago, but watching this video helped remind me of all of his habits. He was my first dog and we got him from an owner who had two other dogs, I mention this because we had a feeling he was a bit abused in that home as he was petrified of other dogs no matter how small, and he was also very defensive when it came to baths, his paws, and anything to do with his face. He was much too feisty for groomers to deal with so we had to bathe him ourselves over the years, and as tiring as it sometimes was I still loved him dearly, and knew he didn’t mean any harm he was just scared. I miss him dearly but it was nice getting to see this lovely gal who looks so similar to him, and to hear the signature snoring I’ve grown to love over the years. People need to understand these dogs did not look like this 100 years ago, like pugs French bulldogs basically all brachycephalic dogs they can't breathe they can't cool themselves down it's sad!!! It's illegal to breed pugs in the Netherlands they consider it cruel to continue to breed dogs that can't breathe some of them have to be intubated to breathe at all they have to have surgery to open up airways this that said pugs are the only dogs that don't try to rip the tubes out of their mouth after surgery.... @@LizC-hq6tt I have though began to recently see pugs with slightly elongated snouts. Some breeders are doing ethical breeding now for healthier pugs, that a) don't look like their face has been smashed in by a frying pan and b) longer snouts, means they can actually god damn breathe. Not sure about the French Bulldogs, but if they're doing ethical breeding on the pugs to get back that elongated snout, then measures are being taken for the French Bulldogs. I loved my little shihtzu, Harvey, so much. His problems were itchy paws (he'd lay down and lick his front paws for hours when they were bothering him) and later in his life, joint issues. He lived until he was almost 15, when his back legs just gave out on him and he couldnt stand any more. I tried to keep him as clean and dignified as I could, but eventually my vet said it was kinder to let him go. I still think him almost daily even almost 10 years on, he was a gentle soul, was never aggressive just very vocal ❤

After a bath (during which she turned from black to blonde) I took her to my parents house, fully intending to keep her myself, but my mother fell instantly in love with her. So I left her in my mother's loving care. The next morning my mom took her to the vet, and long story short, $900.00 later she was on the road to recovery. She lived with them, as their Queen, for eight years, and my parents were dutiful and loving servants. The entire family still misses her to this day.

It's the breeding processes that brings many dogs into this world with problems, Or susceptible to problems. Shih Tzu's do have some inherent issues anyway, But pure bred from a good line and they will only suffer the usual eye irritations and maybe skin problems but will be generally healthy and long living. My baby passed away at 17 a few months ago, She had dry eye through her life but that was it.. Until she got elderly and then old age problems kicked in.. We had her put to sleep cause it got to the point where she could hardly walk would not touch her food and just had little energy anymore. That broke me 😭😭

I adopted my shih tzu from a shelter ages ago and she too was a breeder from a hoarding situation. She was so matted that the shelter found maggots tangled in the mats and smelled HORRIBLE. Hair matted completely over her face to the point it affected her eating and breathing. She was so depressed and sluggish that she would barely walk. She made a complete 180 degree change when she got shaved down and became a sweet, goofy girl. Unfortunately, she was mostly blind and, despite being a sweetheart 95% of the time, would growl and try to bite if you touched her feet or the top of her head. Champagne reminds me of her, right down to her coloring. Just a sweet dog from a tough situation that needed a good, patient groomer!

@@_.-._.-. hey so not an expert but as someone with a reactive dog, here's what I learned from experience. You need to do 3 things. 1. Enforce his boundaries. If he's snapped/bit in a situation before assume he may again, and enforce his space for him so he doesn't feel like he has to enforce it with his teeth. That means if someone asks to pet your dog, you may want to say "no, sorry, he's not very friendly". He will never become a friendly dog if he keeps having bad experiences with people stepping over his boundaries. He also may never be a friendly dog, and you may need to make peace with all his loving only being for you. 2. Learn his body language. Pay attention to the subtle signs he's uncomfortable before you get to the snappy phase. Does he start panting, tail wagging, looking away from the trigger or locking eyes with it, freezing, going stiff legged, tensing his chest muscles? Set up a camera, then get out a known trigger to show him while filming him. It will give you a chance to analyze his behaviour when you dont also having to focus on controlling him. Do this more than once and get familiar because now you are looking for that body language and that should become an immediate alarm siren that he needs to be taken out of the situation. 3. Look for triggers. I promise even when it seems out of the blue, there are some. My cousin pet my dogs head when he went to sniff her as he still wasn't sure about her. He grabbed her sleeve in his teeth to stop her touching him. It seemed out of the blue as he approached her and he does usually like people, but basically he clearly felt that she was taking things too fast by touching him before he felt safe with her. Take it slow, and with any identified triggers set your dog up for success when exposing them by doing something you know they can do - ex. If fireworks are a trigger, play a firework video on KZbin at volume 1 and give treats, etc. 4. Take Precautions. Start muzzle training today in your home in a calm environment and keep at it. My dog loved the vet, then got hit by a car and now is terrified of the vet. I never muzzle trained him because it seemed extreme when he mostly reacts by barking... Until he became phobic of the vet. We've worked on that for weeks and he's made huge strides but he still needs to wear a muzzle in the vets office. The last thing you need in a stressful situation is the additional stress of wearing a muzzle when he's not used to it. And yes he will hate it at first, keep at it until he doesn't anymore. You can and should also ask trainers if they can work with you discounted. Explain the situation. They may say no but they may also know someone who will say yes or be able t give you guidance short of a full session, or guide you to other resources which will help. It's a small community and no one wants to see an incident where someone gets hurt and the dog gets put down.

No health issues until he hit 11 yo. He had an infected eye which I treated with artificial tears and antibiotic eye drops. It cleared up. Then, about 4 months ago, he got lots of blocked sebaceous glands. The second infection was a big one and required a vet visit. Now he is diagnosed with Cushing's Disease.

My first dog was a shih tzu named Fluffy. I loved her so much and she had a strange red thing on one of her eyes. My parents did not know how to take care of living things and thought it was just a quirky feature of the dog. Thank you for sharing this information on the breed. The internet wasn't much of a thing when Fluffy was around, but I'm sure she and her eye would have appreciated someone sharing this knowledge so freely.

Poor baby. She looks so happy after her groom. Good job!

The part where the dog was sedated in the bath tub was absolutely amazing 😂

I love how gently and sweetly you and the camera talked to her. We have a shih-tzu who I love to bits
