A Very Brief Analysis: The Phantom Menace

Star Wars has a great deal of lore to analyse. Over time, the history of its universe has been modified. The most significant change was during the time of the Prequel Trilogy. A great many things were added, and some were altered. This can be hard to research, especially from official websites and wikis. We will infer what we can from the movie, combined with background information.
This is not a defence of Episode 1, nor is it an attack. The idea is a detailed, fair, and informed analysis. We'll go over the entire movie, giving credit and blame as needed.

8:15:20 I genuinely can't tell if he's knowingly ripping Disney a new one or if he is genuinely just giving them a best faith interpretation but it eviscerates Mandalorian 3 either way. He just finished going over how difficult it would be to make significant modifications to the N-1 as well as the range limitations of the N-1 Starfighter and how those limitations are accommodated for in the lore before assuming that in the Mandalorian the N-1 Starfighter was being mounted to the Razer Crest and used as a personal starfighter instead of as a replacement. Since obviously that is the best faith interpretation of how the N-1 would be handled. However, if he knows how it's actually used, him pretending to not know is actually biting commentary on the fact that it makes absolutely zero sense as a replacement for the Razer Crest. A bounty hunter using a single seat starfighter with a short range hyperdrive as his only means of long range transportation for himself, his adopted space baby, as well as prisoners and cargo is pure and total nonsense.

I have accidentally stumbled upon perhaps the best video on youtube. 12 hours of high quality analysis of a 2 hour and 16 minutes long movie. Interesting, unobtrusive and calming to listen to the narration. The depth of the information is both impressive and unbelievable as it must have took a very long time to create a masterpiece such as this. You represent the essence of star wars and 1.3M views on a 12h long video is proof that the star wars fanbase is very much alive. It's a wonderfull world full of mystery, the galaxy far, far away. There are a lot of people who love it, want to learn more about it and immerse themselves in it. You have given a star wars fan exactly what he was looking for. Top quality star wars content. And for that I thank you.

This video is absurd. The absolute depth of every single minute of it, the long digressions into engineering or other tangentially related fields, the breadth of sources drawn from. @@keganmemestar4465 I like this universe, but yes, analyzing fictional facts on a serious face is a very dubious task, given that the creators themselves did not bother with this and were guided by the desire to make the best shot, plot armor or give a certain color of the sword to the actor at his request. It's like a stupid attempt to justify why the stormtroopers were cockeyed (the answer is obvious - they are the bad guys and the main characters must survive). Moreover, doing it for 12 hours, so I can agree here. At least you know how to use this word correctly 😄

23:45 I think this may be another case of George trying to show us how docile and passive the Republic and the Jedi are at this point in the story. Republic citizens appear to call small to medium sized, non-battle worthy, ships "cruisers" because they can't really imagine an all out war after having a 1,000 or so odd years of peace. Republic classifications at this time are simply not the same as they are during the Clone Wars, under Palpatine, nor The Galactic Empire.

I honestly think if he was made to be 11-13, that still would have been an acceptable compromise. Having Padmé mack on a boy so hard she intentionally stunts her growth is just...it's unintentionally icky. Not all kids are edgelords in their teens, and ffs we ended up doing that in 2 and 3 anyway. Hell, we knew Anakin had a grudge for his slave life as of AOTC. Having him express some of thar to Padmé during those private moments would have made Anakin more well rounded, regardless of his age.

A few years more could have make him a more experienced and volonteer person, for the space battle for example, instead of a lucky genius, and having a better chemistry with Padmé. It's probably to set up his apprenticeship as a Jedi, and it was clear that Lucas wanted to gather a younger audience, but he's already too old at 9, so why not go all the way. At 4:33:00-ish when you talk about Maul's spin, there is actually another angle to it as well. It is a bait. Although it doesn't come into play here I've seen it in multiple lightsaber fights. The move establishes to the opponent that you will do stupid spins and they look out for it to punish you, but whenever they go in for the attack the next time you spin you ignite the secondary blade on the back of the saber and pierce them while their attack stops them from reacting. Here we see that Qui-Gon's saber comes down before the spin ends. He is not aware that Maul has a double-bladed lightsaber and the hilt is covered by his black robes. I think if Qui-Gon was aggressive Maul could've exploited it and end the fight there, but since Qui-Gon didn't go for it Maul didn't make the attempt since he would reveal the trick of his weapon just to likely end up blocked.

This is an amazing video, thank you so much. There is one thing that stood out as absolutly hilarious to me: You always assumed two options for the viewing experience, either you wached Episodes 4-6 and then 1-3 *or* you wached Episodes 4-6, consumed more Star Wars Media an then watched Episodes 1-3. Well my experience and that of most people younger than 30 years I know is neither of those ... we watched them in chronological order, starting with episode 1 and only getting to the original trilogy once we finished the prequels. So we were surprised that Palpetine was a Sith and became the emporer - but we were way more surprised, that our hero Anakin Skywalker turned evil, because we never heard of Lord Vader before Palpatine gave that name to Ani. On the other hand, the famous "I am your father" our parents were going on about was no twist for us at all. I always assumed that was the normal viewing experience for my generation ... than again, maybe the ages at which you are allowed to watch the different movies might be different from county to county, and I guess that woul play an important role who was to young to watch them when they first came out.

At the end of the 1990s, in between "proper" (i.e. full-time) jobs, I was working as a cinema projectionist when the reels arrived for some film I'd never heard of called "She Stood Alone." Given the subject of this video, you can probably guess what it really was :) Distributors used to send out films under fake titles when they suspected they might be stolen if it was obvious what they were. So, Episode I will always be a little bit special to me because it's the only Star Wars film where I've been on the other side of the cinema experience: handling the celluloid, projecting it for audiences, popping into the screen during key scenes (to check the volume and focus, of course!) and seeing the reactions of audiences to experiencing it on the big screen. Let's just say they seemed to enjoy it well enough :) I was about 7 years old when I saw the original "Star Wars" (under that title, too, with none of your "Episode IV") in the cinema as a kid, and there's no doubt that kids of that same kind of age - the target audience - were swept up in it. The only people who were po-faced about it were 30-somethings like myself, who had seen the original trilogy when they were kids and so expected the prequel trilogy to be made for them rather than for the current generation of kids. Luckily, I never felt that disappointment with Episode I because I saw all the kids coming out of the screen, buzzing with Star Wars like I had done when I was their age. And that put a smile on my face.

Now that's a rare and exclusive experience! I know about the famous Blue Harvest working title, but I'd never heard one for TPM. Clearly someone had to have had a story like yours, I've always imagined how that might have played out. I have a slightly odd perspective in that I'm in between the eras of OT and prequel kids. It was always Episode IV: A New Hope to me, never Star Wars. Yet on the other hand, this was before the special editions or the prequels. At first I was content to watch VHS tapes and read novelisations of the OT, I was never motivated to see Episode 1 when it was brand new. After it was broadcast on TV, I liked it as much as the other movies, and was excited to see more. I looked forward to AotC, and talked the family into seeing RotS at the movies. For this channel, I was unsure how much I wanted to include the prequel lore. For the first videos, my default position was to prefer pre-prequel sources at every turn. As time went on, though, I came to realise that I truly do love the prequel trilogy. There are certainly more minor gripes I have with them, but on the whole I consider them to be an authentic part of the Star Wars setting and saga. -DZ

This is nice and all, but I was 15 and I hated it in 1999, and I hate it ever since. Please understand that. A LOT of things don't make sense, even after watching this AWESOME 12 hour analysis. I have a long-long list, but here are a few items: - The Neimodians plan to capture the queen and sign a "treaty" is nonsensical to an unbelievable degree. Even if the queen signs such paper, what would that worth in the eye of the Republic? They essentially put gun to her head, and no official agreement / contract is official if one party signed it under durress! Why does no one address this? - When they arrive again on Naboo, the blockade is no longer present. But why? It is never addressed in the movie. One would think that now they captured Naboo, they even double the blockade to keep any outsiders from interfering - so it being not present at all, makes no sense. - The droidekas conveniently vanish when Padme pulls the gun out of the throne armrest compartment. This is addressed in a throwavay fashion in this analysis - they sent them out since they don't need them to guard unarmed prisoners - but we don't see any evidence of that in the movie. As far as the viewer is concerned they should be still there. I remember being surprised at 15 at this - where did they go? Why couldn't we see a clever solution from Padme to defeat the Droidekas in the throne room? And of course we get this sentence in the analysis: "The battle droids were not given an order, so they don't react in time" - eehhh... even the analysis author admits that they were given the "guard the prisoners" order. Was that not enough? How can multiple seconds pass without a droid reacting to the prisoners getting guns? - The Jedi Council is painfully incompetent, to the point of sheer absurdity. After 1000 years, a sith has appeared, and they NEVER lend any help to Obi and Qui-Gon? They never send any more jedi knights to investigate this and assist them in the Battle of Naboo? Not ONE more? I don't want to create a wall of text, so I'll stop now, but these (and many other points) are never addressed by TPM proponents.

@@The_Peter_Channel I may be able to help with at least two of these. Firstly; The treaty was meant to be signed and then presented to the senate. The trade federation would present this a legitimacy of their occupation, as you have pointed out this is indeed a laughable affair. the entire senate already know that naboo is under occupation, that's why Qui-gon and Obi-wan go to naboo in the first place. Chancellor velorum had attempted to gain permission to send a jedi negotiator to settle what was then a mere blockade as a favour to his 'good friend' Palpatine. receiving either a denial or a delay to his request he calls in a personal favour from Qui-gon and provides him the radiant 7 we see at the start of the movie. the entire planet has been Blockaded for a few days already, meaning no ships may enter or leave naboo's atmosphere, the lugrehulks formation is to guard the 2 hyperspace entry/emergence points to enforce this. Palpatine's orginal plan involved the trade federation Presenting the forced treaty to the senate. Legally everything would be spakley clean, however the morality of the situation where the people of naboo are denied aid, locked up in camps, have their homes and land destroyed (if we go by the battle of naboo game) would make the senate very tense, naboo is a mid-rim world and a wealthy one at that, it would set a lot of worlds against the trade federation and raise a lot of sympathy for Palpatine in the senate as he no doubt would waste no opportunity to bring up his home world and its ongoing suffering. when Velorums term as chancellor is over, Palpatine has not only the sympathy votes but also the others attained through politicking, making him chancellor and allowing him to 'rescue' naboo. Not a bad plan and as breadcircus puts it 'Expertly improved' tl;dr It was meant to be seen as a joke, it was part of Palpatine's longer plan to become chancellor Secondly; When returning to Naboo the Lugrehulks had been reduced to a single highly modified Droid control ship. The Blockade fleet was meant to discourage entry to the naboo system (or escape, as we see) They assisted Nute gunray in deploying troops to Occupy the planet. When they had captured every star port or hanger there was no longer any worry about people leaving atmosphere. It only takes a week for any message on the sub-space network to reach anywhere in the galaxy. 'Naboo is closed' would have been broadcast since their blockade began and most freighters would not have wanted to fight with the trade federation to deliver cargo. Nute gunrays ship and droids stayed to keep the planet in line, the rest of the fleet returned to regular federation business as it only takes one control ship to control all of the droids. Thirdly; I have no idea for the droidekas. Fourthly; It does seem a bit silly, The councils decision is based upon the logic that maul wants to get to the queen. they wish to keep the conditions that drew him out the first time as similar as possible to draw him out again. Force users can sense other force users, an overconfident maul thinks he can take two jedi at the same time. If he suddenly sensed 10 jedi and council members at that, he would remain hidden. The goal and small print of Qui-gons assignment was to either kill or capture maul to determine whether he is a sith or not. The council get their confirmation of Mauls Sithiness by the way of him killing Qui-gon. The jedi at this point in history are answerable to the senate. They pass 'Missions' to the council and they distribute, if a knight wanted to take a vacation then they better not cause or resolve trouble while they are out otherwise the senate would ask why the jedi was on an 'unsanctioned' mission. Hope this helps

@@mostnobleancient9297 Thank you for the lengthy explanation. Let's take them one by one. Firstly: OK, so you seem to be suggesting, that treaty signed or not, Palpatine wins. If it is signed, he can point out the facade, and step up against the TF. If not signed, what happens in the movie happens, and Palpy wins. Interesting setup, but it only works against a really dumbed down senate and Jedi Order. And that is my fundamental problem with the PT. Lucas dumbed down the Jedi so much, it is laughable that he tries to present Palpy's schemes as some kind of "master plan'" when all it takes is two braincells to figure out what is going on. And you would expect Yoda, Mace and the others to have more than two working braincells between them. My specific issue with your explanation ties into the big picture. So let's say the Naboo crisis can be resolved either way, and Palpy is happy. But we still don't know how or why the Trade Federation is willing to do this on Darth Sidious' behalf. I mean it is not explained what the issue is - taxation does not cut it - and more importantly it is not explained how the TF in their right mind would expect this playing out in their favor. Terrorizing an entire planet and they expect the Republic to give them lower taxes? This never made sense to me, not even upon first seeing the movie in '99. If it is something else, we never know - and that's a flaw, since the audience will not understand the foundation of which the '"masterplan" is built on. Palpy at least should be able to present some scenario that is believable at face value. Also, the Jedi with their more than two braincells should be capable of seeint through this, as I mentioned before... Secondly: The scenario you are describing could make sense, but I take issue with the fact that the Jedi still exist. The TF should expect the Senate and the Republic not standing for Naboo to be occupied, so in lieu of an army, they WILL send Jedi. And dealing with Jedi is easier in space than on the ground - as they barely made it out of the blockade in the first place. For that reason it would have been logical to keep the blockade, and in the movie, nothing indicates the TF withdrawing the blockade. Thirdly: My point stands then. Fourthly: Your point is logical, I can see how Maul would not confront 10 Jedi. But from the position of the Jedi Council... what difference does it make? In the scenario of him being scared and not coming out, he will come out at some later point, according to his mission. If his mission is to capture the queen, he will not stop pursuing that in the long term. So it is silly to risk Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's lives to "draw him out", when the immediate mission is to protect the queen, not to draw out the Sith. Again, this shows the Jedi Council's laughable incompetence. I don't really believe Lucas thought this through properly, not even on the level of "they want to draw him out". He just wanted his fight scene... I wouldn't say the Jedi would take such risk at this point of the conflict. They would send in a group of 10 Jedi, to make sure the queen - and with that, Naboo - is protected. I can't really see any logical way around that. Yes, drawing out Maul again would be it, but that should have a way lower priority than resolving the Naboo conflict in terms of the Jedi Council. When the Naboo conflict is solved, they should expect the Sith to hide a bit more, then stir up something else, somewhere else - but that might provide an opportunity for the Jedi to set up a trap for them, without risking the lives of a Master and a Padawan. It might not, but the main mission will be then to resolve that conflict, and so on. And with each of these conflicts, the Jedi would have more and more information about the Sith plans and MO, granting long term advantage, and eventual success of trapping them. Instead, we see this ridiculous priority shift, which is not logical at all, and costs them Qui-Gon's life.

@thebreadcircus sweet! I've watched them all half a dozen times, and several marathons, but the amount of research and context and stuff is teaching me so much. I like how you give the facts as they're presented, even when they contradict each other, and then say what your opinion is, which you like, etc. Your idea to fix Jar Jar is absolutely brilliant. I never realized how little I know about engines, so I had no clue what was going on during most of the Pod Racer info, but it was fun nontheless. I sincerely hope you can do 12+ hour movies for all 9 movies while still having the life you want and being able to pay bills.

@@mtuktuk9627 lmao not in the slightest, I am ecstatic every time I watch them. I assure you it is not for lack of exposure to whatever you would consider high cinema. My other favorites come in three flavors. ‘40s golden age: Rebecca, Maltese Falcon, Philadelphia Story, Miracle on 34th Street, White Christmas, and of course the only perfect film besides Revenge of the Sith, Casablanca. Animated movies starring animals: Lion King, Bambi, Jungle Book, Princess Mononoke. And spoof comedies: Walk Hard, Black Dynamite, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Kung Fury, Wet Hot, They Came Together. What I want from movies (outside of sick shots that convey story) is either outlandish nonsense, killer lines from cool characters in tight, sentimentally driven moral dramas, or fairy tales come to life. Star Wars is, in my eyes, the singular successful case of the third in live action. It’s very much like Sleeping Beauty, the visual storytelling is simply transfixing; virtually every frame could go up on your wall and when people walked in they’d stop wide-eyed. Watching those images _in motion_ is an experience that I consider the height of cinema, right alongside the striking black-and-white shadow work of Rebecca, or the colorful choreography of White Christmas, or the painted forest backdrops of Bambi, or Black Dynamite saying “I am smiling” when he’s clearly not. Nothing sad about knowing exactly the nature of my taste. In fact, if you couldn’t tell, I’m quite proud of it.

One thing i always appreciated was subtle facial expression changes in Obi Wan's face after he sees Qui Gon die. It's a brief moment of range, quickly quelled into jedi focus. He is a master of the light side of the force, so he was able to push out hate and anger. It's such a short moment in the movie, but i noticed it even when i was a kid when i saw it in theaters.
