If you don't fall asleep right away, it can always be that you weren't loud enough. Also, it needs to be someone you feel comfortable sleeping in front of.

Trent really is a player character in this one. NPCs drop what they are doing to give him an enthusiastic greeting, he is able to immediately start sleeping for exactly 8 hours and wake up completely energized, while the NPCs who he initiated dialogue with wait that whole time just so that they can complain about it to him when he finally wakes up.
