I wish I had something like this because I do have an actual ships bell clock (one in a gold case) and it doesn't use a bell. It uses a gong.

I've just been given an old parlor clock whose previous owner was once told that it was nothing but a cheap clock. However, my own research indicates that it is most likely a Seth Thomas "Concord" clock from the City Series of clocks that it made. In all the pictures of "Concord" clocks I've seen, not all of them had Seth Thomas logos or other branding on the face (and mine doesn't either), but the design of the case, the pendulum and the chime are all perfect matches.

a ships bell clock has a very different strike. Starting at 12 there are 8bells, then at 12:30 just one bell adding another bell each half hour until 4 (8bells) and the pattern starts again. The day is divided into 6 "watches" or shifts. starting at 12, then 4, then 8 and 12pm, 4 pm, 8, pm.

The hour hammer raises like that because the pin wheel has not been aligned with the locking wheel higher up.

I have a 1984 Seth Thomas Legacy that my Uncle Joe Krouse had. Unfortunately we lost the papers, and everything that came with the clock due to the fact the 1st clock repair man died while working on the clock. It plays 4/4 Westminster chimes, and has a low note rod striking. My Uncle Joe had the clock that was given to be Christmas of 2015. It is now 33 years old. It was made August of 1984. It chimes so beautifully for a clock that old. I wish I could have the full information about that clock. My Uncle Joe who own the clock died on April 17, 2017 on My mom’s Birthday. The clock is all I have left of my Uncle Joe. I hope I won’t loose it if a fire or natural disaster happens.

And your clock was made in 1984, or did you mean 1884? 1984 is just getting broken in for a good clock like yours. It should give you many more years of carefree timekeeping as long as you get it serviced every 5 to 10 years!

Hi, you have a certainly scarce Seth Thomas clock from the 1880 era. It has no relation to ship`s bells, but is a variation of grand sonerie strike. They were more common in European clocks. As far as I know (75 years of messing with clocks) no other American concern made a quarter strike. It must not have been very successful, as there are not many around. Saw one on EBay a few months ago, in mint condition, went in the low 4 figures. The Europeans were mostly repeaters, I have a Vienna type regulator from c1840, 3 train, (2 springs, weight for the time!) that strikes like yours, only on gongs. Have a few carriage clocks much the same. Hope this is some interest to you, best regards, KB

Petite Sonnerie. Grand Sonnerie strikes the hour after each quarter strike.

This chiming pattern is very common in Black Forest three-train cuckoo clocks. One, two, three or four "quail" calls each quarter and then "cuckoo" calls for hours. For example, at 3 o'clock such a clock makes: chirp, chirp, chirp, chirp, cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo.

The model name is "Hecla" and is classed as a shelf clock.Bracket clocks are small, intended to be hung from a metal fixing point in a coach or hansom cab when a lady was travelling, hence the name.It has cathedral chimes and dates from around the mid 1880s. The original glass would have been engraved,so the door glass on this example has been replaced at some time.Mine has a patent date stamp on the gong set-up 9th May 1882 and a production date stamped on the rear of the case. The date is usually reversed on Seth Thomas clocks and the letters A-L represent the month. The one I have is date stamped 5881A denoting January 1885 These clocks are now an endangered species and preceded the Westminster chime versions. There are also some two train clocks with a very similar chime arrangement and are a little easier to find than this rare beast.

I'm talking about the raised hammer. The hammer for Big Ben rests in the raised position just like the hammer in this clock does.

***** From what I understand, it rests in the raised position because it's better prepared to strike the hour that way as compared to if it were to rest on the bell itself.
