Good to see the Old Girl Again!!!.... I am the son of former owners! When i first saw her she was Green... Parents had her painted blue... Made her look so much better.. Those davits were definitely a pain to use but they were Solid stainless... I never minded how they looked but i like things over designed for strength.. much like the boat itself.. sad they are gone but i understand i guess... they pre date my parents ownership as well. I think the wood work was all gloss at one point but that may be my memory going on me... may She sail on!

Captain Q and Randy, First of all, I can tell the love you have for each other! Almost like a father and son. It is obvious to me that Captain Q's passion for sailing was given to Randy. Earlier in my life, I sailed but only small boats on a lake. I enjoy watching your videos because it causes me to think about picking up the habit again. Again, GREAT videos.

That sounds pretty dreamy! it's such a spacious boat and a great adventure platform for short-handed crews or a big family - and to know the Hylas can be had for about 1/2 the price is a nice inside secret. Was the center cockpit wet in the heavy seas?

@@YachtHunters We have just finished a 36,000nm, seven year loop of the Pacific and the cockpit was fine. Any of the waves that did enter the cockpit came from astern or abead and would have been worse in an aft cockpit.

As always, great tour Cap! From the looks of the drawings, the space behind the aft bed, under the reverse transom looks to be empty dead space. If it were at all possible, I'd probably try and cut a couple of swim steps and a shallow swim platform into it. Would make dinghy boarding so much easier and safer. No idea why this wasn't standard with reverse transoms of the era.
@YachtHunters
@YachtHunters 3 жыл бұрын
I believe they've filled that space with two lazarets - one of which is sealed off for the propane tanks - in which case you'd have to give up some storage. Could be worth the trade off depending on where you plan on cruising. On my last boat, we had a small folding ladder that attached to the midship toerail that worked well.

Hi Captain Q, I'm from Hither but haven't seen you around? I love your videos, your knowledge of boating terms is incredible! 7000 years of sailing vessels have created a plethora of terminology and you've got it covered! I have a question...I've noticed some rub strakes are really high off the surface of the boat. It makes me wonder is the designer was looking for some amount of lift caused by water hitting the rub strake mostly it the front. If you see the boat in heavy water you'll notice water hitting it, and it must create some amount of lift...wouldn't you think? Maybe not. Random fact...the upward force of the exhaust stream on a top fuel rail drag car creates 600lbs of down force, that's why sometimes when the engine cuts out, the car will be uncontrollable. Rub strake...lift?
@YachtHunters
@YachtHunters 3 жыл бұрын
I really don't think they thought of getting lift . The primary reason was saving the hull from barnacle laced dock dolphins . Actually i think they put them as high as possible thinking that the early boats designed to take an early heel to 15-25 degrees would keep them OUT of the water and thus eliminating any drag .. but yours is an interesting thought though if valid racers would be covered with them thank you

@@YachtHunters She's a great boat. A true KP though, not a Formosa or one of the non-QueenLong 44's. In our neck of the woods on the coast of British Columbia in Canada, a good one will go for $225k CAD. These boats were some of the best boats ever to come out of that great yard - beautifully built and fantastic sailers. 180 nm days are possible on passage.
@jandtlivinglife3130
@jandtlivinglife3130 3 жыл бұрын
Also, my opinion on the passage to the aft cabin. The KP-46 has a passage with similar headroom but without the bending of the neck required on this boat. However, our passage is only about 30" wide, which means in a seaway you are always secure. I would be concerned about being rolled into that bunk while trying to pass through on a starboard tack.

Info to purchase boats we review is located in the description - either the broker or seller.... in this case the boat was purchased recently by a family member. so it's not for sale. Otherwise, check out Sailboatdata.com for detailed specs on the boat - a 1982 Stevens 47

the Hylas versions are closer to 200k but the Stevens which often suffered from charter use are in the low 100s but this one was one owner owned and though still it needed a tiny bit of here and there fiddling was even less. a great buy you just have to hunt and be prepared to make a cash offer at best and the sell price of boats today may shock you.

Unfortunately, she’s not on the market... but she is a member of the family and she sails wonderfully. Highly recommend the Stevens or Hylas (if you want a fancier finish)

I have serious issues concerning the seaworthiness of this vessel. It showed no signs of either Freixenet, nor any Dinti Moore, aboard. I've heard plenty of stories of vessels not being able to circumnavigate their own home port, let alone, sail to the far ends of the Earth, without those two necessities on board.

We always hope that the surveyors will pick up on this sort of problem when they discover these boats certainly it is critical and nothing to be scoffed at or overlooked and it’s a surveyor hands in his bill and there’s no discussion of it I don’t think the buyer should pay the entire bill

I have a friend with a Hylas 47 and no doubt this is a very nice blue water cruising yacht. I think it's some point you might want to introduce your viewers to basic yacht parameters that are indicators of performance and comfort (Displ/L, SA/Disp, Ballast/Disp, comfort ratio, etc). Saying a boat is "very fast" doesn't really provide an adequate point of reference. An easy way to deal with this is to simply make PHRF rating comparisons of similar boats. You could put up a simply plot or table. The Stevens/Hylas is a decent performer but it's heavy with a lot of wetted surface. It's not going to be very quick under 8 knots of wind but that isn't what it was designed for. On a close reach in 20 knots the boat comes into its own with all that waterline. Thanks for taking the time to do these reviews.

Are they imperial or metric? Yes. Well, unless you're taking pipe threads, but let's not get into that. Also, nautical miles are neither imperial or metric. Simple, right?
