Hello Captain Q and Randy! Thank you for having visited and shown one of these truly beautiful boats! Ferenc Maté also put the vindös on his much respected list of 100 best boats rightfully so. I get the same feeling of actually being on a bigger boat on our vindö32. My response for the pulpit question by the way would have been different though. I know the swedes mostly like to use the stern anchor and tie the bow onto one of their beautiful islands so the lower bend in the pulpit makes access over it easier. Hope to meet you guys one day and walking the docks together sounds like it would be great fun:) Aladino from SailingMagicCarpet

Hi Aladino! We absolutely adore your channel and spoke about it for days leading up to our little tour of this lovely Vindö. They made such a specially crafted piece of art... and you were smart to bring yours back to life. Thanks for the tip on the pulpit... we always have something new to learn in sailing! A walk on the docks sounds great... and let us know if you swing over to the US after Covid and want to head out for a sail. Cheers and keep up the inspiring work!

As. Swede. Ure absolutly right. We tie up to naturehabours in the skerries. (Usally rock part on a iland) Stern poking inwards with a sternachor. On the Vindö hulls. They were laminated lockally. Loyds certification was a selling point back then. Since they were early glasfiber hulls. They Where overbuilt. :)

@@YachtHunters Just trying to help you out. And anyone else reading as it is always nice to be able to pronounce somewhat correctly. There are other Swedish sailboat manufacturers which can be a bit difficult. Example. Vindö is not the only boat from Vindö, there is also Regina of Vindö - look it up, beautiful sailboats. Malö is another one with the Ö Winga - The W is a V-sound. And Najad - First A is a fast a like in Andersson. Second A is a long one like as long as U in Uniform only with the a sound.

@@pearlofqatar7779 hi,yes, they where interchangeable, but it was uncommon. Almost all of them where made by request but hte sailplan hardly changed I have seen about 16 of them, 3 were identical in layout . It was one of the main reasons they went bankrupt: extraordinary craftsmanship and materials, and to many changes per ship, and still wanting to rival the pricesof competitors... My family's ship was a demo (first) of the HISWA 1977 in Amsterdam. No back cabin(!), ketch and still the 6 beds. I saild her solo in my teens around the Netherlands, Egland and France . Extremely reliable, stong an gentle lady. My love for the salt, sailing and creating and maintaining sailboats derived from these adventures, and the touchable love the Vidö builders had besowed oppon her. Ok, 2 questions. 1) Pros and cons to a deck stepped mast? And 2) I would worry about taking my dog on a trip. How do they do their business and how would you know if they slipped off the boat. I’m not sure I could do that. Any thoughts on that?

1.. this is as good a commentary as you may find : www.riggingdoctor.com/life-aboard/2020/5/20/deck-stepped-vs-keel-stepped-mast 2. Dogs require a lot of patience and training , make believe patches of grass put out for them to learn on ...a good harness and life jacket with a handle on it behind the neck will facilitate retrieval and i am sure they will let you know if they go over the size of the boat should determine the size of the dog.... i might think a saint Bernard on a j-24 not a great idea .....etc although i did have a Rottweiler visit me on my sunfish once ever so briefly ...lol

I have been the proud owner of a Vindö 50 ketch with a permanent wooden doghouse for over 20 years sailing in the Baltic and around the Swedish coast. It is now sold to an owner in Kopenhagen. I miss the Boat however everything has its time. I can confirm all the positiv things said in the program and adding to that, that it is an extrem safe boat with the potential to become a Happy ship. Maybe not the fasters sailer in the world, but for exampel with only the missen and and a reduced jib, you are sailing confortable even in a gale. Poor joy with that little ship, and of you take down the Sails, and start the engine, you fel like ridning in a pilotboat. I congratulate an eventuel New owner.

@11.12: The pulpit has that countersink in the front, because in Sweden everybody is mooring the boat with the bow towards the wharf, so to get on and off the boat it's shaped like that. The boat was built on the west coast where it's also popular to moor to the cliffs out in the archipelago. There it's also comes out handy to have this shape. It's not useful when you take down the mast because the doghouse will make it come well over the pulpit.

Our pleasure! a little update though for you: "The engine is a Yanmar 3GM30F. Incredibly reliable, 1500 hrs. I did the repower in 1998, but still consider it a “new” engine. The mast step is not a tabernacle, but you are correct, there is a positioning pin that looks like it works that way. Worth a mention on boats with deck-stepped masts is what the compression post arrangement is like to carry the load to the keel. On my boat it was built into the corner of the head. Evidently I steered you wrong on the bow pulpit cutout for resting the mast. I know it fits there nicely, having done that when hauling the boat out on Peaks Island. But I lived in Sweden and know how useful it was for mooring to rocks too.

Another beautiful boat! I appreciate the “Captain Q Measuring Stick,” but I’m still watching for one with even more headroom (say,,,,maybe 6’5”?). Probably too much to hope for? Great show as always!
@YachtHunters3 жыл бұрын
Right on! Do keep an eye open for used Columbias they were very simple but well built with lots of head room the 43 especially was accommodating ...not like Hinkley but good old Tripp designs

I'd recently requested that you review a Scandinavian vessel, having missed this episode. This boat is sure tempting! Thanks for your great work.

We love your videos! This particular episode piqued my interest as, growing up, my family sailed on a Swedish boat, an Accent 26 (Shipman 26 or Norlin 26), designed by Peter Norlin. She was an absolutely wonderful boat - solidly built/constructed with superb craftsmanship; she was comfortable and sailed beautifully! Another spectacular and informative episode - thank you so much, Captain Q and Randy! Happy Holidays!

Thanks for sharing! European boats are built for the North Sea and the Bay Of Biscay and english channel as opposed to American east coast protected harbors and coastline and lighter air thank you for your note

I can't believe this vessel didn't make your top picks for the year. I've watched this video many times and I love this boat!!

That doesn’t make it a lesser boat just that the smorgasbord we had before us was overwhelming But you are among a very large group of admirers. She is a beauty

Ran-day has now claimed that the Vindo slipped his mind and it should have been his #3.... he got swept up in all the excitement!

@@YachtHunters Well I'm now content....I'll take #3. BTW I think 50 refer's to 50 sq meters and I'm watching the video again....happy days.

Love the channel. Let me start by saying I grew up on an old wood 1968 Egg Harbor Cabin Cruiser, in So. FL. Been all over the Caribbean and know the cost of fuel. I didnt start sailing until a few years ago. Thought I wanted a motorsailer after my kids were grown, but as I got more into sailing realized too expensive for retirement and not too eco-friendly. I've got less than 2 years before I'm an empty nester. 30 years of kids,, love em but mama needs a break. I've been following lots of other channels, before finding your. I have my need and can do without list. I also subscribe to the never buy new, let someone else eat the depreciation value. You finding these gems, is not only educating me more on vocabulary and slight differences in rudders/hulls etc. Where once I ruled it out, only to find I'd sacrifice stability/smoothness for slight speed differences. Charts and stats dont tell you that. It's helping me widen my makers and hopefully I may snatch up one of those blue water gems, when time is right. I used to be up in Maine quite a bit, but thanks to Covid, stuck in PA. I wish I was into sailing when I was stationed in Winter Harbor, ME, back in late 80s-early 90s.

You are lucky, because all you need is to find a boat whose interior smells like the Egg Harbor. That's the one U want

Thank you Angela for your note . I hope you can make it back to Maine we have our own distinctive smells as well...

Tried to upload a pix of the old girl while she was in dry dock, after a 6 month complete overhaul. At age 20. But couldn't.

Not a starter boat, but a real starter blue water boat with a ton of character. I kept pinching myself that the boat was 46 years old and had done some seriously nautical miles! Personal note: I have learned such a lot about sailing and boat designs, so please Randy and Capt Q keep doing more of these videos in 2021 and stay safe until vaccinated and then stay safe after.

Love the channel. As well as being informative the banter between you and Randy is hilarious. This boat really catches my eye. You can tell how well it has been cared for. She is nearly 50 years old, and is in stellar shape. Don't know whether you two funny guys celebrate Christmas or not, but if you do, then I wish you a Merry Christmas. -Brian

Thanks 👍 usually celebrate any thing we can but recently due to the down size of our home the big tree has given away to a manufactured 6' foot Walmart special that is as thin as my old grandmother and reminiscent of George or Kramer's Festivus tree but since putting it up every year we have found profound happiness Festivus for the restofus !!! credit to Jerry Seinfeld thank you

Great video. The opening in the pushpit is not for carrying the mast in canals, we don't have much canals in Sweden, and Nordic sailboats are made for sailing. 😉 It's more about how we usualy tie to the dock or clygfs in natural harbours. We usualy have a stern anchor and the up with the bow against the cliffs or a dock. The opening is for stepping true.

I love Vindo boats. I loved the rebuild story on the Sailing Magic Carpet channel. The owner buys a junk/salvage Vindo and rebuilds it from a total loss.

Vindo 50 means that the sail area is 50 square metres. This was how Vindo designated all their boats, until the last, the Vindo 995, which is 33 feet (9,95 metres).
