Let me tell you something: my dad is autistic and goes non verbal for long periods of time. I have barely had a full convo with him in my 23 years of life. But one thing lately that has me full of joy is that he’s learning to use emojis. He used to never answer my messages but now he is with different emojis and I cannot explain the joy I get from seeing a peek into mind. I graduated in linguistics so this makes it all even more interesting.

16:10 we do know why "I'm fine." sounds more aggressive. It's because the period was designed to signify the end of a sentence but you don't really need it when texting since sending the message is itself a way of communicating that the sentence has ended hence the added period must be holding extra information and in this case it's typically interpreted as being "curt" or incredibly/needlessly formal.
@TradStick492 ай бұрын
Also to add, if someone who doesn't typically use periods or formal writing in their messages suddenly does so mid-conversation, it can feel like a sudden shift in tone. It may give the impression that the "air has changed" in the room, creating a sense of unease or something's not right/okay.
@Gopal_eats_rocks2 ай бұрын
I think it comes down to the fact that internet and online digital typing culture doesn’t use those symbols, and a period is sort of a finisher. Especially if your saying “I’m fine”, which in media, and real life, is normally just a way you know someone is not fine

THIS. i do think those things with some autistic people can be a signs of attempting communication. going mute is a sign of an attempt to communicate, spiked and slowed stimming is communicating... for hyperexpressive types like myself, facial expressions are communicative... but the interpretation of any of these is a miscommunication 90% of the time. if i storm off in a huff it is likely not because i am mad at someone, but because i am not getting info that i feel is vital or i am not understanding the logic and no explanation is solving it. i smile or even laugh at horrible news and it is not because i am laden with schadenfreude or trying to be a cunt but because my reaction when receiving bad news and esp shocking news is to... do that-i cackled like a hyena when i was told my grandmother died. if i go mute it is for a myriad of reasons. if i stim faster while communicating, it is because i am trying to take in auditory communication genuinely in depth-whatever the topic, it is complex or new, and that takes time and effort, and stimming really helps that. if i am making eye contact consistently, i am fucking lying through my teeth and/or not taking in a word being said; if i am not, i am active in the convo. but. people actually _accurately reading that communication_ is extremely unlikely. this is why it's laughable as autistics. because that shit only applies if it is intepreted and for us, it never fucking is.
@static4948Ай бұрын
@russianbot8576 I dunno if this is valid...? People not being able to interpret your non-verbal communications correctly doesn't really contradict his point? A colour blind person not being able to see the colour red doesn't mean the colour red no longer exists. What he says still applies to autistic people. Even if your body language, tome of voice, etc. is expressing something in a way that isn't the norm, it's still expressing something.
@tCOREetАй бұрын
@@static4948 This is true, but you wouldn't expect a colorblind person to tell the difference between red and green. Generally people expect you to understand their social cues and get frustrated when you can't even if you have told them you have autism.

I think it's interesting that, at least in the circles I'm in, there's a slight ironic twinge to using emojis that is hard to articulate to someone who didn't grow up online like I did? And I wonder if that comes from emoji being seen as 'cringe' and 'corporate' especially in the early 2010s, like peak emoji movie era where corporations were adopting emoji to seem hip with the youth when no one quite used them fully in conversation yet. Even to this day there feels like there's an inherent silliness (positive) to using emoji. Like, I've had serious text conversations and they never include emoji even if it would seem more reasonable to use them to convey a seemingly more nuanced message? But possibly because they're so inherently Casual, I find myself including them as a way to show that I'm not being serious in a message. I'm being silly with it. My favorite combination for doing this is 💪😔 it literally always works. The pensive flex is literally unbeatable imo Second slightly related topic is how certain emoji take on the tone of what they're commonly used in? Like I know I use ❗️❗️❗️and 🔥🔥🔥 to convey ironic over enthusiasm, literally because of the "WHAT IS HE COOKING❗️❗️❓❓🔥" and similar vein memes- even when the message I'm typing isn't an explicit reference to that meme or containing a similar sentence structure. Third and final thing about the subsection of emoji usage I see in my peer group is that we tend to use less "face" or "person" emoji? Like at least out of my recently used the only face emoji are 😔 ,😭, and 🤨, and I think it's because I use emoticons and emoji interchangeably for the most part, with the exception that those three express things that don't have an emoticon equivalent. Anyways here's to hoping for the empty wallet with flies emoji in the near future!

this video was interesting to me because i noticed how differently i interpreted some of the examples you gave. I'm 17 and I frequently use emoticons like >:( :3 :> :P etc and they read as more cute/innocent than if i used emojis. if i do use emojis its usually unserious or sarcastic, even passive aggressive but i do sometimes use them as intended when I'm talking to older generations. It also strikes me just how much they overuse them sometimes (think facebook where after every noun they feel the need to add the emoji equivalent to it, like pants👖 which to me is just annoying). it just shows how much our understanding of something so simple can really differ, in this case depending mostly on age (internet culture is also a huge factor) (im from Poland btw hi:))

Emoticons are very much returning with gen Z, I for one almost never use emojis and I haven't seen someone use one in a while. I've seen lots of emoticons, though. Gen alpha, on the other hand...

5:00 I'm sorry WHAT did you just say about emoticons? They're much better than emojis in every facet except for variety, and I'm not even old. I'm younger than you are, gramps. Your opinion of emoticons is as outdated as you are :)

For my whole online life I almost always abstained from using emojis, for I began disliking them immediately after seeing their nature. It certainly has to do with the specific way I grew up and observed them, but as you said, emojis got too casual, and more and more meaningless. I dislike emojis because whenever someone uses them I'm certain they are not feeling that emotion. "I'M DEAD MAAN😭😭😭", however, stone face; simply "😂" doesn't mean you laughed anymore. It just kind of means you thought in your mind the thing deserved a laugh as a reaction. While I agree there are people who don't abuse them, the majority just instinctively taps an emoji they often use, like a smoker pulls out a ciggy when they feel like it. It's not a result of a conscious response anymore, and I greatly despise than when it comes to emojis. Also, if I want to transmit some emotion as an answer to a meme or something I directly say how I felt seeing and I almost always end sentences with a full stop, because I got used to it, but I understand some people prefer emojis over literally writing the feeling. I guess I didn't expect an emoji documentary so to speak, but this was one of the most comprehensive views on the usage and evolution and these symbols, thank you David.

I hate the skull emoji, it's so brainrotted and people think it's funny. it's not. Can't wait for people to reply to this comment with skullemojis. Some people think that ANY form of irony or sarcasm is funny, it's REALLY, really not.
@Lari-lc3zq2 ай бұрын
“You’re killing me” is a very old expression which means something is so funny that you’re laughing so hard you feel like you can’t breathe. The skull emoji is a natural evolution of this saying.
@Skivv52 ай бұрын
@@Lari-lc3zq That is a good point, but that does not make it any less brainrotted and overused.

"Im fine" and" Im fine." are different for a pretty simple reason actually. Do you text in complete sentences every time you text? Hopefully not, only when necessary right? Adding a period when you do not need to adds emphasis and can convey tone. (since its not normally needed)
@MelodiePJ2 ай бұрын
Oh, okay, I get it now. Thx!
@CheesyenchiladyАй бұрын
I sometimes type in full sentences, and sometimes don’t. But considering, “I’m fine,” is a full sentence, my brain (or my phone) may auto fill a period, and I would be annoyed if someone tried to read into that lol.
@hazeltree7738Ай бұрын
There's also the fun little variation of "I'm fine" "I'm fine." "im fine" "im fine." If you bother with capitalisation and punctuation anyway

one of my best friends started using the "😇🙏🇫🇮"(usually we use it in discord so 🇫🇮 looks like finnish flag) combination of emojis which many people liked so i also started using it. after some time i invented the "😈🤘🇳🇴"(norwegian flag because it looks a little bit like evil/sinister version of more "pure" finnish flag) which everyone also liked that became one of THE jokes of our group and it's really cool also i've been watching your videos for months now so i'll finally subscribe now 😌 edited: i just got to the emoji combos part and yeah we nailed it 😎
