I use HJKL now because I simply got used to it, but I agree that IJKL or even WASD would be so much more intuitive. To all the purists: the reason HJKL is the default is because the original creator of vi, Bill Joy, used the ADM-3A terminal, which had arrows printed in those directions on the keycaps. That's JUST as arbitrary as IJKL, if not more, so just configure it to what is comfortable for you, as that is the whole point of using vim... That being said, I think there is SOME value to sticking to defaults: if you use vim or vi over ssh (are you really gonna bother setting up a vimrc for every session?), or if you use applications with a "vi" mode, those probably also use the HJKL maps.

I wish someone could provide a default configuration that makes sense for the most. Lots of people want to escape vscode, without having to lose 50% of productivity while learning the tool.

i use astronvim! theres also lunarvim and spacevim and several other popular setups!
