I find walking round a cemetery fascinating. I went round one in Edinburgh once, near Holyrood, and some of the mausoleums were amazing. I find that you can learn a lot about the area and it's residents of the past, and who the influencial families were. I also once went round a small village graveyard, again in Scotland, and most of the people buried there were farming people, some of the gravestones had a sheep dog or some other animal engraved on them, so you could even tell what type of farming they did. 😊

For me, cemeteries are an open air archive, one of the most pleasant places to do my research. I have an interest in funerary architecture and stone masonry and whenever I can I will go exploring these places. I will never willingly walk over marked graves, but I appreciate that some remain unmarked for various reasons, whether due to the wishes of the deceased or poverty of the family.

Im same as you Michael when i take flowers to my familys graves i walk on the grass between. If when sorting flowers, watering or wiping headstone i find im stood on edge i say sorry to the grave, also if i forget bottle of water for the flowers and a nearby grave has one tucked behind headstone ill say hope ya dont mind ill bring it back. I always put it back full of water, and thank them again. Like u said respect seems to be going out of window in some kids today.

Have just come across your posts, and they're fab, my chosen career would have been working for a Funeral Directors, but various health issues dictated otherwise. I thought I was weird having always taken an interest in these things, and always making a point of visiting the local Crematorium whenever I was staying in a new location, and in my youth in the 1980s my interests were seen as a little odd, to say the least, but your posts are great, if I'm ever in Sheffield again I'll visit St Michael's Cemetery

I never knew this cemetery existed , it's only small and it looks like there are lots more spaces , who owns it and looks after it Michael any idea .? And are only Catholic people that can be laid to rest there ?
@MCF1552 жыл бұрын
It's full love. Yes it's a Catholic burial ground. It's a private cemetery owned by the church. Although you can't see a lot of the headstones there are still graves there the headstones was removed for safety x
