Wow! Gorgeous flowers. I have an explosion of peduncles this year. It seems I can’t do no wrong Hehehe. Who would have thought. They just growing in my normal household condition. I did choose only intermediate and cold growers. This thanks to your informative site and your list. ❤❤❤❤❤ I have a small one which has been growing slowly. I also find rather when Hoya established and grow well there flowers last a lot longer.

Hi Doug 🌿, such a lovely hoya! I'll put it on my wishlist for next spring. Throughout the summer, here in my place, Gdańsk, Poland, all my plants were growing beautifully, plenty of daylight and warmth but dark times will be coming soon and maybe there are casualties... February will be replacement time... Anyway, take care, warm greetings, Irena
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas2 жыл бұрын
Hi Irena🪴, I think you and I have the same growing conditions, and yes, there will probably be casualties during those dark months. I think it is just a part of growing Hoyas that we have to come to terms with and not let it get us down to much🙂. You take care as well, enjoy the rest of your summer, and all the best to you!

Hallo, Doug, beautiful plants you have. Thank you for the videos and the informative website. May I ask you what do you think about lechuza pots for hoya's? As I can see you don't use self watering pots.
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas2 жыл бұрын
Thank you fore the kind words! I have tried lechuza pots and other self watering pots and they don't work well for me. Also, I have given up on lechuza pon and leca, as I would eventually always rot the roots. They seem to work for some people, but I have permanently given up on them.

@leonettab74792 жыл бұрын
This one is beautiful! It seems like you use multiple substrates depending on which Hoya you’re working with, how do you choose what to put it in?
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas2 жыл бұрын
Great question Leonetta, but one that I don't have an easy answer for. Currently I am using mostly coconut husk chips with a little perlite thrown in for good measure. I am always trying new substrates trying to find the magic one, but there does not seem to be the perfect substrate. My old standby mostly peat-based mix that I had such good luck with for years doesn't seem to work for me any longer. I guess my conditions no longer are suitable for it. Tree fern can work well if you can rinse all of the fine dust off it, but it seems to do one of two things: It holds too much moisture, or not enough. The substrates that I will never use again are leca and Pon. These seem to work great for some people, but I just can't get them to work for me, and I swear that I am done with them.

Where did you buy your clips? I’ve seen dragonflies and butterflies but not this one. I’d prefer this shape if I could find it. And did you repot all your Hoyas in tree fern? I have to look into that substrate as I’m not familiar with it.
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas2 жыл бұрын
Those are Bumblebee clips and they stopped manufacturing them a few years ago to my knowledge they are no longer available. Tree fern, I can't really recommend; it is very expensive, and if you don't rinse all of the dust out, it can hold too much moisture and rot the roots. I am having better luck right now using coconut husk chips mixed with a little perlite.

@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas thank you Doug. I’m glad you said something cuz I would have gone looking for tree fern.

@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas when I use coco chunks they don’t absorb water if I top water. Do you bottom water yours?
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas2 жыл бұрын
@@1101naomi Another great question Naomi! I should make a short video talking about it. You're correct; when you normally water coco chunks the water shoot right down through without moistening the chunks. What I do on the plants in cups that I have drilled holes through is to set the pot in the same sized cup without holes, and fill the pot with water. I wait a few seconds and pull the pot out and the chunks usually will have enough moisture in them to last for around a week that way. I save the nutrient solution and use it on the next plant. Now this could be a very bad idea if you have a pest like root mealy bugs, as you would quickly spread it throughout your collection. Knock on wood, I have never had this insect that seems to be rampant in the Hoya community.

Doug, I’ve always wondered - why do you say pentacle rather than peduncle?
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas2 жыл бұрын
Well, let me tell you since you asked. For many years in the hobby, I never heard the word spoken so I made a guess at it pronunciation, which was wrong but it became ingrained and hard to break from. It seems to be a difficult word for me to say. I have also heard from some that it is pronounced PEE/DUNK/UL, and from others PUH/DUNK/EL. So I guess I will just have to keep struggling with it.

Doug sir, I would like to ask, which kinds of hoya will you plant with 100% tree fern? Looking forward to your reply, thanks in advance.😊
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I have had the best luck long term with using tree fern with only two different Hoyas. Hoya carmelae and Hoya obtusifolia are still thriving in it. Most other Hoyas not so much. I still have the rubida from this video in it, but it is only doing okay. After a while, the medium seems to hold too much water. I recommend coconut husk chips for 90% of Hoyas now.

@@DougChamberlainVTHoyasDoug sir, Appreciate your rapid response and provide valuable recommendations. Besides, will you use bark to grow hoya? Are the functions and characteristics of bark and coconut husk very similar? I
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas Жыл бұрын
@@yuchinlan3277 I knew a guy that grew amazing Hoyas in nothing but coarse fir bark, but he grew in a high humidity fog chamber where humidity seldom fell below 95%. I did not have success using his bark method, because I could not keep the humidity consistently high enough. Coconut husk holds more moisture and doesn't break down as quickly as bark.
