A VOYAGE BY SEA | THE SOMALIA RESCUE MISSION 1991

In January 1991, a remarkable four-man committee led by Murabi Sajjadbhai M Rashid, the then Chairman of Mombasa Jamaat, embarked on a historic rescue mission in Somalia. With unwavering courage and support from philanthropic donors like Naushadbhai N Merali and Roshanbhai R Merali, they chartered the M/S Ambassador I to evacuate our community members amidst the turmoil.
Despite challenges and critical moments, including stranded lifeboats and negotiations with authorities, their determination never wavered. Ultimately, over 1,000 evacuees, irrespective of race or religion, found refuge, demonstrating the strength of unity and compassion.
