Growing up in Massachusetts in the late 70s, we learned about this island in junior high school. It was presented as a cautionary tale of what can happen when natural resources are exploited for a short term gain without regard for the long term consequences. That being said, it still may not be too late to reverse the damage but it would take fundamental cultural and political changes which is very hard to do.

@@PolishBehemoth It honestly seems like Nauru did an isolated case of a capitalism speedrun. They extracted all their resources, squandered the money in luxury and excess while destroying their ecosystem and giving 0 consideration for their future, and this is the result. What happened on Nauru, is happening at a much slower rate around the globe. This is what wealth extraction does, if we aren't living harmoniously with nature and replenishing what we can as we go, all resources are finite. We cannot possibly have infinite growth, and Nauru shows us what happens when that wealth is gone. It's tragic, but should be seen as a lesson many of us are ignoring. We need to stop tossing things in landfills and recycle EVERY material we can. We need to stop monocrop farming and grow sustainable food forests, that nurture themselves with overgrowth and foliage instead of mining phosphates and shipping them globally to replenish nutrients stripped of the ground from growing the same plant over and over and over. We need to do better.
@PolishBehemoth11 ай бұрын
@@Fenthule I dont see how the terminology or practice of capitalism has anything to do with this. Socialist countrys are even more corrupt and waste resources and starve people in much worse ways! Look at soviet union (one of the richest resource lands in the world), north korea (who gets food shipments from other nations), cuba, venezuela (another super rich nation turned to shit from socialism). Etc. - Your second statement was kinda all over the place. Its impossible to recycle every single thing every single time. We dont have the man power or the education or the industry facilities for something like that. And also global resource trade depends on equal and fair trading fo rthe sake of business and survival. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are very similar to this island nations story. They (the former) almost exclusively live off of oil and natural gas deposits. But their government uses the money for health care, and better roads, and investing in other things that offset the problems of the one resource.

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. Jesus Christ loves you so much that He died for your sins and rose from the dead. If you repent from evil ways, believe that Jesus has paid the fine for your sins on the cross and confess Him as your Lord, you will be saved. You see, we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, that's why Jesus Christ, fullness of Godhead bodily, lived a perfect life, fulfilled the prophecies and law, shed His Blood at the cross just so you could be forgiven, reconciled back to the Father, receive God's love, be made a new creation, whole, sanctified. It's not about religion and what good works you can do to earn salvation, it's only by grace through faith in the finished works of Jesus Christ. Read God's Word, preferably start with Gospel of John, pray for the Holy Spirit to fill you, give you wisdom and revelation that way you're born again and see your life changed by the Spirit of the Most High. Much love and God bless you!

Think about larger scale, what is going on with whole ecosystems all over the place, due to greed, next year share prices, stock market and constant profits of various corporations. Limited resources and constant growth are only possible for a while, after resources are gone? You are pretty much fcked. From dying of bees, to dying of plankton (which produces almost 40% of oxygen on the planet) and microplastic everywhere. Look what we did with not just whole ecosystems, but climate (at the planetary scale). So yeah, Nauru is just a small example, of a simple human... greed, or some would say "human nature" that hasn't really change in the past several thousands of years. Greed has always been there and is driving force of most of those destructions.
