Depending on how you define "good", the Surface Book 1 could work out for you. I bought one after the Surface Book 2 came out years ago and I still use it daily. It was relatively cheap on ebay and it feels pretty tough. I've carried it around in backpacks and briefcases loaded with stuff and the hinge remains strong and the finish is mostly scratch free. It's not super powerful (I got the lowest end model) but it has always been enough for me. I have a desktop for gaming so I don't need much from my laptop. The keys haven't worn down, the original pen still works (and I only had to replace the pen's non-rechargeable battery once!), the batteries are still good, It's still pretty much like new except I had to dab some gorilla glue on one of the rubber feet to keep it from coming off recently. If something happens to this one I might even buy another one to replace it.

Solid Review. I used to work as an Engineer (now Patent Law) and have noticed that most decent workstations are able to display large assemblies fairly well in CAD, (even a docked ThinkPad T480S was adequate) but a stronger distinction comes when doing kinematics simulations or FEA, so I would recommend that for a better gauge of premium laptops in the field.

Wecams on Surface devices has been underrated until we gone to lockdowns, then we realized that we cams are still relevant and how crappy on most laptops. Even MacBooks for whatever reason equipped really bad Webcam for a premium laptop. Hopefully we will see better Webcam on other OEM's next time. Then Microsoft will feel the competition and might try to slim down the bezels. Not that it's really huge considering its a tablet, but maybe as thick as iPad Pro bezels which isn't razor thin but thinner that Surface Book, and iPad Pro is a pure tablet.

I was lucky enough to get the original Surface Book halfway through university, and it’s still in good shape now. At the time it completely changed how I worked, with handwritten notes being Ctrl+f searchable in One Note and no more carrying paper around for problem sheets was incredible. Having the pen to write down maths equations and still having the power to run Inventor or OpticStudio interactively is something I still don’t see many laptops doing well. I even took a couple of class courses on it. This is the only device that gives me unmatched versatility for conceiving ideas, sketching, then designing and modeling....

This has been the comment I've been looking for. I've been debating between the Macbook Pro and the Surface Book for pretty much all the reasons you said.
@buccob4 жыл бұрын
@@faahym what's your background? And what do you expect to do with either of those devices?... As an example, I am a mechanical engineer but now I mostly work as an industrial designer and graphic designer (self taught). I can run SolidWorks 2017 ok with small assemblies (using the dGPU), with older versions I was able to run solidworks with intel's integrated gpu. I occasionally draw and sketch in Sketchbook, nice enough to present design ideas, but not the best for say, an illustrator. Lastly, I play games but limited to 720p or 1080p in low settings for titles usually older than 2016... (Dying Light, Alien Isolation, Outlast 2, etc) Obviously the Surface Book 3 would be more than capable for all the things I listed, but I still wanted to make this remark since you might find yourself in a similar position 4~5 years down the road. All in all is a great device if you like Windows and if you know you can at least try to explore its different use cases. I still detach my display for reading, watching KZbin or Netflix, but I know people that uses the SB like a regular laptop and that is a bit of a waste of engineering and the investment on this device.

Been looking for this type of comment also. I'm also a mechanical engineer and going back to grad school so most of my note taking needs a pen for writing out extensive equations with all sorts of greek letters. Yes, you can probably find it possible to do tweaks to the design, but there is frankly so much power in this laptop (not at all like a desktop, but that also another entity all together). super review... you hit all my needed bullet points! An overlooked point is of you detach the saucer section the battery life is very short, 2-3hrs...but if you just flip the display around into attached display tablet config you have the full 12hr or so battery life. It's heavier in that config but for me it's a difference maker. Thanks for the very helpful video!

I'm still using the first surfacebook, and while it does have its problems, I don't regret getting it. Long battery life, being able to draw with a pen on the screen, even able to detach it, and an actual GPU that is usable makes it really great IMO. If I could make one change, I'd improve on the monitor hinge. It would be a lot better if it could go 180 degree so you can put it securely on the desk without turning it around via detaching. The screen is just a bit too wobbly to leave the base attached while drawing more than a quick sketch.

That cold memory attack is something that speaks to enterprises that have millions (to billions) of dollars of IP that they want to protect. That's who their target audience is. I'd say the probability of that actually happening is pretty far out there though .... especially when China will just steal it via the internet anyways.
@nattankress4 жыл бұрын
IDK, on my field (Aerospace) the giants are usually using Thinkpads and Elitebooks and Precisions with plenty of upgradeability to work on pretty critical shit. If I was working on IDK AI for the targeting systems of the F-35 cold boot attacks would be far down my concern list.
@titanmanification4 жыл бұрын
So if they didn't do what they did the internet would be filled with haters regardless - Windows is already vulnerable to attacks so why put another reason for someone to have a panic attack with what they would perceive as an "issue".

I kinda forgive this for having big bezels because this IS also a tablet, you don’t wanna have no way to hold it. But Microsoft does need to redesign the device as a whole, and also Intel needs to find a way to boost their U processors with more cores. AMD does it, why can’t intel...
@Soraviel4 жыл бұрын
why doesn't msft use the intel H processors branch instead of the U processors
@evancrazyerror4 жыл бұрын
Moses Jonson the CPU is stored in the top half of the Surface Book, and to add to that it’s completely fanless on the top. There isn’t enough thermal capacity to support an H series chip on the tablet. Their best bet if intel doesn’t want to wake up would be to go AMD, which IDK why they haven’t fully yet it’s not like they have Thunderbolt...
@temorinkaari4 жыл бұрын
I recently got a surface pro 7 and i love it, its exactly what i need from a device - a tablet with a stand, and a laptop if i need it to be AND it barely takes up any space. However, i dont see the point of surface book products. Its inbetween surface pro and surface laptop, and isnt really better than anything. Its just weird. Honestly, i think that microsoft should have made the laptop attachment available as a standalone device for surface pro, so you could use either the cover keyboard or the surface book thing if you need more power

I actually bought a surface book 3 a few days ago because of this review. I upgraded to it from a 2012 Asus gaming laptop. I have been incredibly happy with it. It does everything I need it to. Taking handwritten notes en mass and pc gaming. Just like Linus said, if you want tablet functionality and high performance w/ gaming support, there is nothing else out there, even a year later (that I can find). The only thing in the review that I didn't agree with was the point about the bezels. I would actually have liked it of the bottom bezel was even bigger, it would give me more of a dead zone to grab onto when using the device in detached tablet mode. And large bezels have never bothered me in the first place. I am bothered slightly by the storage pricing, but it's nothing a cheap ssd can't solve.

@linus you should start benchmarking multiparty teams calls with webcam usage. These are standard issue at my company and if you do a 5 person teams call... within 10 minutes they overheat and start freezing pausing and cams cut out. In a time of remote work, the inability to run a video conference call is a dealbreaker. We don’t have this problem with MacBook airs strangely enough.

It's not just the tablet functionality. The main selling point is the canvas mode where you put the screen on the other way round and you get the angled screen for pen input along with the full battery and GPU. For various kinds of professionals this is pretty much the only device that negates the need for an array of other products.
