Excellent video, we made a video on Proctor, NC, a town similar to this that was flooded by the building of Fontana Dam in NC. Thanks for posting!

Thank you. I wonder how it is now. The same? It's beautiful!

It's roughly the same, been there last year though, it's beautiful and I could enjoy the whole historic town all by myself.

A strange place, so beautiful nature around so abandoned ruins, time is so fast today. If it were not animated, it would certainly be a delightful town.

+DRAUSSEN sein West Virginia has many boom towns that thrived briefly on oil, coal, and timber. When the corporations had exhausted these things they abandoned the towns that they'd created to monopolize those resources.

very interesting, but sad that the town declined, but that is the nature of the boom and bust cycle

+Hike with Mike West Virginia is packed with boom towns that went bust. One I visited is called Volcano. It was a major oil town that completely vanished when the big oil field played out. All that is left now are foundations that you can find in the forests. Others are just shades of what they once were with mainly the only major building left standing being the empty banks.

Thanks for the tour of Thurmond. Beautiful waterfall too. What's the name of the falls?
@JamesRobertSmith8 жыл бұрын
+whatnot987 I believe that one is called Dunlop Creek Falls. It's on the road leading down to Thurmond. On the right shortly before you reach the bottom of the gorge.

if it was abandoned from coal i think there should be a wind turbine industry there from the sound of your video. the window lettering looks recent. hand railing too. when was this abandoned? great video

I'm not sure how long Thurmond has been abandoned as a town. It's a National Park facility these days. A few people still live there, but not many. I think we saw three or four inhabited homes remaining. No wind turbines in Thurmond. It's down in a deep canyon, so I doubt it would be a good site for turbines. Maybe above the city on the top of the mountain.

It was officially closed down in the 1960's because coal was converted into diesel for the trains coming through and steam engines were extinct by then. There were 2 banks there that closed from the great depression. 2 hotels were burnt at some point and the post office closed in 1995. But 6-7 people still live there including the mayor.

NONE OF THOSE BUILDINGS LOOK ABANDONED
@JamesRobertSmith6 жыл бұрын
All abandoned except for the train station which is now the office for the National Park Service at the site. The Park Service also does some upkeep of the buildings to keep them from deteriorating.

Is it purchasable

I think some of the homes that are left are private and could be sold. Not sure. Admission to Thurman is free, so you can walk and drive around the ghost town at your leisure.
