I'd been using a similar software when I ran/played 3rd Ed., so when I (was) upgraded to 4th, the first thing I did was look for a character editor -- and the only free one was and is GCS. That's important, but also, it's better, and more up to date than the "official" GCA, and its support model is far better.

​@taijmohabeer4515 I mean, it's not going to be perfectly exact or else you'd have to deal with minute measures of length. So, sure, 2 meters is actually 6 foot 6 inches or so, for GURPS at least, the only part that would really be of use (for the most part) is 6 feet. You're gonna have to accept some level of inaccuracy just due to the nature of things. If the conversion being 100% exact is that important, you're probably just gonna have to accept doing the conversions on your own.

So, I'm new to GURPS and had a question about GCS that I've spent way too long on. I am using the default library that comes with GCS, it seems fine enough but I can't seem to find the magery/magic limitations found on page 23 of Thaumatology. If anyone could help, either with the location in the master library or a better library I would greatly appreciate it.

First, I have to say I've loved this whole playlist (13 videos at this time) that introduces players to GURPS: you do a fantastic job of making it so much more approachable. You make great content! Thank you! Now, let me get into some specifics. I see that the version of GCS currently available (5.0.1) is slightly different from the one in the video, but that most things are the same. That said, there are a few things that seem to function differently. For instance, the advice that you can always drag a trait (or whatever) into the lifting and encumbrance area (described around 4:00 in the video) seems to not to be true anymore. I try dragging things there and it doesn't work at all. Also, at about 3:35 you start to show how we can filter the library details so we can find particular entries for use. When I do this, it doesn't filter out most results; I'm left with *far* more unfiltered content than you seem to get on your screen. I presume this is something to do with the new version including results for the content instead of only the title/heading, but it makes finding what I want kind of hard--LOTS of scrolling. Do you know if there's a way to specify how "deep" the filter needs to look? Like, could I put in a switch (maybe like "/header term", or "term +headeronly") to turn off anything except titles/headers? (And no, those things do nothing, and I can't see info in the release notes about any of this so far.) Anyway, a fantastic series of videos, friend. I'm going to talk to some gamer friends about moving over to GURPS entirely. I'll be pointing them all to your playlist. Cheers.

Ok, you asked for it... a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far... ok, back in college I used to go to a comedy club with my friends once a week. Up and coming comics would travel the college circuit playing these shows. One evening, my friend and I were in the audience, and the comic was bombing. So we tried to throw out some helpful suggestions ;-) We weren't heckling... we were honestly trying to give the comic something to riff on... and he seized the day. The comic told off my friend, and ended with "you and your friend dick-nose" (meaning me). So of course, my friends started calling me "dick-nose". A few days later, we were in a restaurant and a friend came in late, and called out to me across the restaurant, "Hey Dicknose"... and EVERYONE turned around. When he made it to the table, I mentioned that maybe, just maybe, we should shorten it to "Nose", so as to not cause such a commotion, and they agreed. So "Nose" or "The Nose" was born. The year was 1984. I've had this nickname for 38 years. I had to add the "66" at the end because of the advent of the internet... and the fact that a LOT of gamers go by "Nose"... so I became "Nose66"... although, in conversation, you can just call me "Nose".

Understood... building "powers" is one of the more complex things you can do in GURPS (and one I have a lot of fun with). I have (at least) 2 more videos planned... one on Magic (and how I prefer the "Magic as Powers" systems), and the other on Powers, and how to build them. Hopefully those will help (now I just have to write, record and edit them ;-) )

How do I change ref for books? If I go past Characters page 337, something like B420 which is in Champaigns opens Characters, as they're both set as B. Could I change that?

Unfortunately, GCS is expecting the combined Basic Set PDF. You can change the reference in GCS from "B420" to some other code like "BX420", and then map "BX" to the Campaigns book (with a -337 page offset). There shouldn't be a lot of references to the Campaigns book in the GCS libraries (but I grant you, there are some). To change a reference in a master library, you will need to open the library, and click the lock button near the top left. Now open the item, and you can edit the REF field. Once you are done, you can click the lock button again. NOTE: Any changes you make to the Master Library will be overwritten the next time the library updates, so you might want to copy that library file in to the User Library section... to keep you own personal copy.

I also had a page reference problem for the Campaigns pdf linking to BX references - it just opened to the first page of the pdf. I fiddled with the suggested offset finding that -335 hits the page reference for my pdf copy of the Campaigns book.

What are the advantages of GCS over the "official" GCA product (other than price)?

That is a good question, and my answer is purely subjective, but it comes down to these issues: 1. Look and Feel. GCS is WYSIWYG, so you know what will appear on the character sheet, because you see it on the screen. 2. Flexibility. GCS has been constantly developed for the past 21 years... so it has a huge amount of customization to allow you to model your characters how you like. For example, it has support for different Strength progression lists, SW vs Thr calculations, Unlinking IQ from Will/PER, Character "pools" (so you can add new attributes like quintesence), etc. 3. Usability... compared to GCA4, it is no contest, GCS is much easier to use. I have not have a chance to use GCA5 yet. 4. Integration with other 3rd party utilities. There is a direct connect between GCS and GCALC (GURPS Calculator), and our GURPS Game Aid for Foundry VTT can read GCS files directly (where as GCA4 and GCA5 requires an "export"). 5. And yeah, it costs nothing and runs on PCs, Macs and Linux... but I've already said that a million times ;-) I hope that helps.

Great tutorial video! My version of GCS doesn't have a locked icon on my master library items. Where did that button/option go? Also, there's no longer a "+" icon on things like adding a custom modifier to a trait when in edit mode. Am I missing something? Why was this option removed?

This original video was for GCS v4. Rich completely rewrote the system and created version 5. Which looks similar, and works about the same, but there are minor changes. Still, it gives a pretty decent over how to use GCS, if you’ve never used it before. Maybe someday in the future, I will remake this video for the most recent version

I recently installed GCS on my mac, but the Master Library is *completely empty* so I'm not able to add any Traits or Skills to my character sheet. Am I missing something? Or is there a way to import the libraries somehow, and if so where can I find those libraries?

One question: I am guessing this "condition" area that showed up with the modifiers for the Combat Reflexes advantage is a new thing...? My players' sheets don't have this, and I'm guessing because it's a new addition and I probably have to "redrag" the advantages/disadvantages maybe to get that. Because that is really useful stuff.

Yes. Condition modifiers are a “new” thing for GCS (and by “new” I mean in the past 12 months ☺️). However, I need to check to see if we import them correctly in Foundry.

@@chrisnormand 12 months?? That's weird... I started this campain about 4-5 months ago. Also I deleted one of the characters' Combat Reflexes advantage and replaced it for a new one, but that box didn't show up. I thought that it might have been because I was using the version with some enhancements and limitations as per Action 1, but I got the same result when I added the advantage from the Basic Module. Weird... Anyway, this is a GCS issue and you're not their customer service expert, haha. So I guess I'll have to figure this out on my own. If I can't find a solution I'll say something on the GCS discord channel.

I cant seem to find a video of you explaining talents which I might of not found the right video yet but what are the differences between all the talents (large , medium, small) and how do I add the skill I want in the talents? Or just how to I use talents in gcs

A talent is an advantage that just gives you bonuses to skill levels. Large, medium and small just indicate how many skills are affected (and the cost). You should be able to the find the "outdoorsman" talent. If you look at what it does (in GCS), you will see that it gives +1 to the skill level of about 10 different skills. You can copy that talent and completely rename it, and change all of the bonus skills to make you own talent.

hope you can done a series of GCS videos: Building complex characters and vehicles - an elf paladin with a horse and a lance or a dragonborn Wizard with fire innate attatck. Or even brings to our reality building a jet pilot and a combat jet figther plane such as a F-14, its missiles and its dodges abilities. Maybe Alien vs Predator? so many possibilities would be cool to explore the fullest of the GCS.

Hey not sure if your still reaponding to comments but im a little confused about something, recently my group and i tryed put gurps and one of them wanted to play a boxer. They had strength 15, striking power 3, and boxing 15, with a dex of 12. Now i am confused cause o. The character sheet is said d+3 damage, when we thought itd be d+4 damage, since respetive stength should be 18 and boxing would give a plus 2 to each dice damage. But we are all knee and everyone always sings this programs praises, so can you please tell me if we made a mistake or maybe the sheet has some issues with unarmed damage?

They are advantages... so if you open the Basic Set Advantages library, you can search there for "Appearance" and "status".

If you are using a "Spells as Skills" spell (from the basic set or the DFRPG), these are not "Advantages", and cannot be modified with enhancements and limitations. The spell is set in stone, so to speak, and cannot be changed.

Yes, as far as I know, you can do that... but notice, the Fireball spell only allows you to put in FP equal to your Magery level. So if you only have Magery 1, you can only cast 1d burn spells (which can last for up to 3 seconds, costing 1 FP per second, doing 1d burn each second).

Magery is an Advantage. It is in the Basic Set Advantages folder.

I've just downloaded GCS, and will be using it to help my group build their characters- they prefer analog character sheets. GCS seems to have the entire GURPS library available, do I even need to purchase the books at this point? EDIT: One of my characters is intent on playing a pure Mage. When I tried creating an example Mage character for my own understanding, I bumped into the issue of every spell require at least two other spells as prerequisites. Is there an easy way of filtering for low-level beginner spells that I'm just not seeing?

Hi Chris, something of a silly question here I'm afraid. I recently looked into porting a GCS sheet into Roll20 (waiting till my active subscription runs out before moving over to Foundry) and found a thread in which some people were saying GCS uses GURPS 3e instead of 4e and is thus obsolete. This doesn't seem to be the case for me based on the differences I've educated myself on between 3e and 4e respectively, but thought I'd ask your opinion on it?

I haven't done it, but if you search, you can find SJG Forum posts where people put their most extreme Power build. I remember once reading a 300 pt power that could eradicate all living beings in our Universe. Obviously, they stretched the rules to their limits.

As in the Chrome OS? Or the Chrome browser? SJG really dislikes web based programs, and won't sanction them. As for Chrome OS, you might want to ask Rich gurpscharactersheet.com/ on his forum. The current version is written in GO, so theoretically, it might work.

Basically, I would create an Attribute Container, and give it the name of the race, e.g. Dwarf. And then in that container, you add in all of the advantages specific to that race. GCS has some example race templates in the Basic Set library.

So, you've been very persuasive about using GCS but when I downloaded the version for Windows and tried to install it, Windows yelled at me and wouldn't open it. I eventually forced Windows to open and... it already had my name as the player on the sheet, so it pulled it from somewhere on my computer. Which made me panic and uninstall ASAP. As you can tell, I know just enough about computers to know I know next-to-nothing about computers so... is that how the program is supposed to behave? ^^'

Rich cannot afford to pay Microsoft to “sign” the application, since he charges $0 for it 😀 And as for the name, he makes an API call to get the name of the user (a standard function available to any Windows program). It is perfectly safe to use.
