I am a regular visitor to both locations of the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum (National Mall location in Washington DC, and the Steven Udvar-Hazy location at Dulles Airport in Virginia). On previous visits, I took lots of photos, but on my latest trip in late September 2016, I decided to shoot video of my walkarounds instead, to give those who have never visited before an idea of what to expect.
My video starts with the Steve Udvar-Hazy location, and then I move to the main location on the National Mall in DC.

I'm only 17 and the sheer amount of negative and immature comments on this video is outstanding. I really cannot see what is wrong with this video. It's informative enough and is brief as too not take up an entire day to watch. It's an issue I get myself when I visit a museum, not being able to take in every aircraft fully. Cheers for this video anyway, since I'm from England and it's quite a distance across the pond it'll be a long while before I visit myself.

And does it not inspire you to wonder 'why so much effort, resources, industry, and know-how has been dedicated to killing machines? Not only in America but in every other country on earth? When a baby is born it does not know it is Kurdish, Albanian, or from Alabama. It is taught who the enemy is and who to be most scared of. I mean, every baby.

At 44:00 is my father Kevin Uliassi's balloon capsule: the J. Renee. He flew non-stop from Rockford, Ilinois to Myanmar solo in 2000 UNPRESSURIZED (he actually spend a large portion of the time outside the capsule). He reached heights of higher than 40,000 feet and spent the majority of the 10-day, 13,000-mile flight above the hight of 30,000 ft. He holds two world records for his unique flight and has probably spent more time in extremely low pressure than any human ever. The balloon was a Roziere balloon (hybrid heated helium gas balloon) of his own design. He also designed and built most of the capsule that is on display. Thank you for including the capsules on your tour. There are some great feats of engineering, hard work, and courage in the aviation field of long-distance ballooning, but very few people know anything about it.

Hi, I'm not sure of your name, but I would just like to express my thanks for a walk around the National air and space Museum.I last visited on The Mall in 1997… A lot has changed, back then you could touch a piece of moon rock! Having been quadriplegic for the last 10 years, a visit to both museums was much appreciated… Thank you Best regards Dave Moyes

Sometime include the story of the B17 mural in the WWII room and how one of the first visitors recognized the pilot as her deceased husband.

I am 78 years old and have been to the Mall 3-4 times. My love is the X15, and may have missed it, but on the Mall they said they moved it to Kennedy, went there and they said they moved it to this museum. Have been told by many pilots I can not miss it, because it is hanging right inside the door. Need to get back there to see it. I am from the Wichita area and so grew up around planes. We now he "Doc" the B-29 that is an awesome bird. Also in Hutchinson they have the Cosmosphere which is a great museum. Will be watching this video more than once. Love your work.

My dad took me to the Paul E. Garber Silver Hill facility many many years ago. We entered the last storage hanger in the back and it had very low light. Over to my right was a Focke Wolf 190 fuselage. I look over to my left and there is this enormous silver fuselage. I look down and it says "Enola Gay". I can't believe my eyes! I'm standing right next to the most famous plane ever piloted by Paul Tibbets. I placed my hand on the name in awe. I went back to see her fully restored around the time this video was made with her out of reach always knowing that I touched her that one day so many years ago.

Regarding the Concorde. Passengers reported that the windows and would get very warm at cruising speed of Mach 2. Friction caused a lot of surface heat and was a limiting factor for speed. G'day Mr YouTuuba, I want to sincerely thank you for this wonderful video. I am ex-R.A.A.F. and an almost obsessive aircraft enthusiast and scale modeller. Normally, I avoid museum KZbin videos because, until I discovered your excellent work, I grew to earnestly dislike, even loathe, those 'run-of-the-mill' efforts. You, sir, are one of an extremely rare breed of video maker who understands the concept of keeping your camera steady and providing a gentle, seamless panning style that makes viewing your work a genuine pleasure. Most videos of this ilk make the viewer suffer through cacophonous background noise; jerky camera movements that have the effect of a camera on a rollercoaster ride, and those that don't provide any narration, or, if they do, swiftly reveal their significant lack of knowledge of all types of aircraft. I live in Tasmania, Australia and I'm 67 years old. As I have a serious risk from the current pandemic, and other health issues that, realistically, mean I shall never be able to visit aircraft museums in the US myself; this and your other videos are manna from heaven for this old aircraft disciple. Plus, I can't begin to tell you how much your videos will help me in my model aircraft hobby. This year, 2021, is the 100th anniversary of the R.A.A.F., the second oldest stand-alone air force in history, after Britain's R.A.F. A few fellow R.A.A.F. veterans have joined me to do a multiple model build of the most significant aircraft from the R.A.A.F. inventory. As the majority of these aircraft were US built, again, your video will be a great help to us to make sure we have got our livery, decal and painting details right, even though our models will have Australian roundels and stencil work. We also built several US, UK and Canadian aircraft under licence which, all through the war and into the 50s and 60s. This kept our relatively small aircraft industry going. Sometimes we managed to improve on the originals. The best example of this was the F-86 F model Sabre which we built under the designations CA-27 and CA-31 Avon Sabre. As our variant altered nearly 60 percent of the original design, it was granted the status of a unique aircraft type. US engines for the Sabre were needed for the Korean war so we installed the longer, more powerful Rolls Royce Avon engine and swapped out the six machine guns for two powerful cannons. With a longer fuselage and wingspan plus larger air brakes, among other modifications, the result was the highest performing Sabre ever produced. The USAF was so impressed by our Avon Sabre they incorporated some of our ideas into their Super Sabres. We did a similar job on a variant of the P-51 Mustang, sadly, it was too late to serve in Korea and as jets were beginning to take over, our CAC CA 'Kangaroo' was surplus to requirement even as the first batch rolled out of the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation. Still, they had a useful career as an advance flight trainer. Of course, I have subscribed to your channel and 'rang the bell'. I look forward to viewing your video collection, even those that don't deal with aircraft, as you seem to have a widely variable range of tech topics. Since leaving the air force, many years ago, I've become a military historian and my co-producer and I have spent several years researching a series of TV documentaries that have kept us happily broke and busy in retirement. Based on this video of yours alone, we would have no hesitation in hiring you as a second unit camera operator and even consider you as part of the narration team as you have a perfectly acceptable 'broadcast voice', if we could. Sadly, the pandemic, has brought our documentary projects to a halt. Down here it is extremely difficult to put together film and production crews that, by their very nature, must work, physically, close to each other. My wife, my co-producer and I have run out of funds and unless we find an 'angel' to take on our project funding; it's devastating to realise that all our hard work will probably be for nothing. Still, we keep on working, researching our next project. I have discovered that I really enjoy research. Your knowledge of aircraft seems to be quite comprehensive, anyway, if you ever require any details on WW2 aviation in the South Pacific Theatre, please let me know. It would be an honour to help another aviation 'obsessive'. Cheers and all the very best, Bill Halliwell

@@airzulu2733 They deface artwork -- statues and paintings -- ALL the time in Europe and they're supposedly a hundred times more civilized than Americans if you believe our self-serving media! Do you honestly think an unguarded, retired military plane doesn't have morons that would deface it? It some ways, the planes are even more inviting targets. They're generally closer to the public and over half of them are in areas that aren't guarded that well or have anything like closed circuit cameras watching the area. The USAF Museum has repossessed several historic aircraft that were in horrible shape because the caretakers didn't protect those planes! They took back the Memphis Belle PERMANENTLY because the city of Memphis, TN allowed the plane to deteriorate horribly over decades. They didn't take care of that plane or clean it over the decades the city had it in their possession. Finally, the Museum had to act or the plane would be lost for good. It was vandalized multiple times and virtually the entire interior was stripped because, you know, souvenirs! Yes, thank you for the excellent video tour of both aviation Museums. It's obvious that all of the aviation artifacts located in 0ne building, not possible. I'm an Army Air Force retiree, B-29 era, and would never have seen some of the Aviation, that you were so thoughtful to give us your time to video. Thank you again. And the video has the playback to view again have a closer view.

Thank you for the video. I seen the planes late 1967 in the Smithsonian, I still hope to go back again, I was 19 and a big aviation fan. I seem to remember you could walk in to the Capitol building as easy as walking into your hometown courthouse in those years.

I was part of the original security team there from 2004 to 2009. UDVAR HAZY holds a special place in my heart. We had between 3000 to 20,000 people a day that would see it. A lot of people who were waiting for their flights a Dulles International Airport stopped by. In the spring we had" Be a pilot day" . Numerous celebrities and dignitaries came through. Including Dutch Van Kirk and Col Tibet's came by. When I 1st got there were only 65 aircraft. When I left in 2009 there were over 400 exhibits and aircraft. NASA staff would come in once a year to service and do Pm's on the Enterprise shuttle. I got to know a few of them. Udvar Hazy himself stopped by on occasion. Look at the huey helicopter it was a few bullet holes from the Viet Nom war. Don Lopez was was 1 of the Directors and I believe flew the p40. Thank you for the great memories. I haven't been there since I left. The observation tower had a live feed so you could hear Dulles Tower. Corporate Events I think are still held there.

I'm not sure of your name but you sure did a very good job of this tour. That's praise that I don't remember sending before. I did the tour myself in the year 2000. Today and time in Cape Canaveral (?) in person was the highlight of my time in America. I'm Australian and have watched the space events since a child. That's from 10 yrs to my present of 66yrs.

The observation tower has a live feed from IAD tower for departures and arrivals. The observation tower is 174ft high. I've seen John Glenn, Micky Rooney, Bonno, Frank Sinatra Jr, Robbin Williams and TRANSFORMERS-2 was filmed there.

Thank you for sharing this. I love this museum. I haven't been there since the 80's as a child. It was an adventure to go there each time when my brother and I were on summer vacation to see our grandparents in Northern Virginia. My favorite things to see were the aircraft carrier model with its intricate detail. I always thought it would've made a great toy! Lol! The other was where you could walk through the rocket ship and see everything inside. Going to the gift shop and getting a toy space shuttle and a package of dehydrated ice cream was fun too. Those were good days. Thank you again for sharing this.

I was fortunate and ived in Alexandria for a 5 yrs and was able to visit the original air and spqce museum. Sadly the one at Dulles had not been built yet. Those museums are fantastic. I felt like I was walking thru a sci fi movie when I visited. So much to see in D.C.

Your video is just plane (plain, pun intended) AWESOME! I lived in DC in'69 and '70. What aircraft that a person could see were all in the Smithsonian Castle and the ground was broken for the new museum. I've wanted to go back ever since. NOW, I just plain can't resist, I must go ASAP. Thank You for your inspiring video!

Thankyou for an excellent and entertaining video. My partner Catherine and I visited The National Air and Space Museum (NASM) in June 2019. So this brought back really happy memories. We didn't have time to see the Udvar-Hazy museum; but we packed a lot into our six days in DC. Loved the city; and as always, very taken with the likeable folk we met everywhere we wondered.

I was lucky enough to be one of the first few thousand through the door, but haven't been back since. I am sure it is still glorious to see and experience, but, when it was only two days old? Wow. That was Bicentennial weekend, 1976, and the National Mall was a great place to spend three days. Was a lowly sailor, on a ship out of Norfolk, Virginia. So, wife and I were up there for the whole thing, and a highlight for me was spending an entire day in the new museum that just opened a couple of days ago.
