The algae dancing to the music is good. I could watch that tumble for a bit.

what did you use to snake the tubing between the filter cups? I am trying to do the same as i feel the fuge area without additional flow the water is pretty stagnate.
@rudolfsreef3 жыл бұрын
I’ve connected the flexible tubing to a hard plastic rigid pipe that fits perfectly under the filter cups chamber. The rigid pipe is called “external filter outlet pipe” normally sold with Eheim external canister filters or can be purchased separately. Here’s a link to a web shop with a picture of the part. I just used what I had in storage, I’m sure it can be improved upon. I don’t use filter socks so I don’t ever need to slide open the socks trays. I use a small amount of filter floss in the four filter cones, 4cm thickness, that is replaced weekly. In order to keep the floss raised up I’ve placed some media balls below (just as a platform and not intentionally for biological filtration) www.eheim-aquarium-parts.co.uk/proddetail/eheim-4005710-professional-3-external-filter-outlet-pipe

@@rudolfsreef did you have any problems with your cheato being sucked in to the overflow into the skimmer chamber because thats the problem I am having. I can get the cheato to spin but the water flow into the skimmer chamber is so strong that the cheato just gets pulled into the weir.
@rudolfsreef2 жыл бұрын
To avoid algal filaments being blown off the tumbling ball and ending up stuck to the overflow weir, you must control the pump’s water flow that’s causing the ball to tumble. If the pump’s water flow is too strong then you will get chaeto being blown away. Reduce the water flow if you have a controllable DC pump to the lowest flow setting to get a very low flow/slow chaeto tumble. If you have an AC pump, then install a valve onto the tubing to reduce the water flow. I have a DC pump and a valve installed on the tubing to fine-tune the flow as best needed. When the chaeto ball grows larger I can slowly increase the flow by first opening the valve on the green tubing and since my DC pump is quite large it’s always set to the lowest flow rate.

My dream tank....well done. Where did you get those cooling fan inside the sump?
@rudolfsreef2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The usb fans were purchased from Amazon many years ago; but they are not meant for cooling the water, are not water proof or corrosion resistant.

How did you go about blocking the second compartment to use it as an rodi?
@rudolfsreef Жыл бұрын
the tank is a RedSea Reefer 3xl 900. The display tank, sump, stand and plumbing are included in the purchase. The sump has two tanks, these two can be connected together (to increase total volume) or kept separate (as I have in order to use one as a sump and the other for the RODI auto top off water). In either case, the connective plumbing and the PVC seals caps are all supplied with the Reefer tank on purchase. These parts can also be ordered individually from RedSea. Here’s the link. g1.redseafish.com/support/manuals/products/reefer-3xl-900/tabs/spare-parts

Which powerhead do you use to make your cheato tumble?
@rudolfsreef3 жыл бұрын
I used to use a Macro Algae Reactor (cylinder) that came with a Jebao DC-2500 controllable pump. Stopped using the reactor. Re-purposed the cyclinder as the new 10L CaCl2 solution storage and re-purposed the pump for the “tumbleweed” Chaetomorpha 😊. Besides the controllable pump, have installed a manual valve on the green tubing to be able to control the flow even lower as the lowest setting of this pump was a bit too much when the Chaeto was golf ball size in the beginning. It grew in a couple weeks to the size in the video and I keep it at that size. The valve on the pipe is now always fully open and the controllable pump is always on its lowest setting, providing the perfect tumble and chaeto exposure to the lights. Just clean growing green chaeto. No red or green slime algae, which was a big problem with the Cylinder Macro Algae Reactor.
