Also, does the mom not believe that a general who killed hundreds during a war a few years ago COULDN"T kill someone now? What kind of logic is that?

The mother, like too many people, is overly swayed by appearances. It's that same trait that, in another scene, leads her to disbelieve that Columbo is a real police detective (hardly the only character in the series with that problem, I know). Meanwhile, her daughter is someone who tries to look beneath the surface (as she explains to Columbo in reference to her sculptures). It's fitting that someone like that would be the one to see through Eddie Albert's character (albeit maybe in spite of herself).

The ending of this episode had to be cut with a stand in. Watch it, you’ll notice that Columbo’s back is to the camera while Mrs. Stewart faces the camera. Pleshette couldn’t stand Falk so he shot his dialogue with Hollister & Stewart by himself. Then a stand in & cutaways were used in that final scene. Apparently, he was unhappy with the script & kept demanding changes. The delays annoyed Pleshette so the director compromised.
@markpage9886

Falk was striking for more money and for an opportunity to direct an episode of the series. Albert and Pleshette were both furious at the no shows and the never ending delays. Albert, never one to pull a punch in his life, gave Falk both barrels at the end of shooting... to Pleshette's deepest joy.

Mrs Columbo My friends, read the credits. Many-most-all (?) of the episodes were not written by Levinson/Link, but by individuals whose names we're not familiar with and hopefully gained credit for. As most of you have noted, we owe credit to the writers. Touche, unknown writers of one of the greatest, most legendary, body of work in television history.

I admire Eddie Albert, great actor. He was also a decorated Marine officer that landed on Tarawa, earning a Bronze Star with Combat "V" during WW2. His son, Edward Albert, was in the movie , Midway, he played Matt Garths (Charlton Heston's Character) son in that movie. He, Edward Albert, in my opinion, was not a very good actor.
