As mentioned by many many people underneath: The only reason some devices say "do not use fast chargers" is because its charging circuit is not designed for higher current (usually they're rated for 5V 1A or less) One way they get around this issue is including a VERY cheap cable with at best 30AWG cable inside, which has higher resistance, which in turn reduces the charging current. The fast chargers will NEVER supply higher voltage unless it is very sure the device is able to and is ready to receive such voltage. This is why if you use a dodgy cable, or power-only USB cable with your phone, it will never enter Fast Charge mode and defaults to the slow charging mode. The controller will lose its battery capacity no matter what you do, but keeping it "topped up" all the time by leaving it plugged in will slightly reduce its lifespan because the charge controller will keep cycling the charging on and off when the voltage of the battery goes below 4.2V. (It will charge a little bit, which tops up the voltage of the cell to 4.2V, which stops the charging, then when the host device uses up some electricity, the voltage goes below the charge threshold, and it starts charging.) I should add that I'm an EE graduate (nothing to write home about though, barely passed) and I know what I am talking about, because I am a hardware designer who regularly tests stuff like this.
@SkiesTurnedGrey2 жыл бұрын
It should be mentioned that leaving it plugged into the PS4 is fine. The PS4 has a feature where it only supplies power to the USB ports for 3 hours after entering rest mode. This is enough time to charge a drained controller, but will allow the controller battery to naturally lose its charge if unused for several days, as it's no longer getting power from the system beyond that 3 hour period. I don't recall if this is the default setting, so everyone should check to ensure their controllers last as long as possible.

I think it's been mentioned a few times already here, but using 'fast charger' type USB chargers used for phones will have zero added effect on any other device that uses USB for charging. They don't provide any more than standard USB charging amperage unless it knows it has connected to a device that allows fast charging (namely a different chipset in your phone). The battery in a PS4 controller will lose its ability to hold a charge over time no matter what method you use.

@AngelaTheSephira2 жыл бұрын
So many issues in this video... Since the one regarding fast charging has already been mentioned several times, I'll go with a different issue. Namely, wall adapters (or any switch mode power supply!) do not force current into connected devices. If you plug a device only rated for 500mA into a 5A supply, it will only draw 500mA. Now, what this means is that the error here, if any at all is present, is that Sony doesn't properly manage the cell charging current in the controller. Therefore, it's possibly relying on whatever it's plugged into to limit the current, and in switch mode power supplies, that means forcing the power supply to drop voltage, and so instead of getting 5VDC, it's likely closer to 3VDC or potentially none at all. Oh, and this also means that they are in no way USB compliant.

That's a bit of a misconception, the fast charging adaptors for a phone also supply the standard 5V. They only output more if they can negotiate with the device that's being charged a higher voltage(a.k.a. it is connected to a supported phone). That's the reason that on the back of the samsung adapter it says 5V or 9V. The higher current doesn't matter, because that's only peak output, the controller will only take what it needs.

This only applies to fast chargers that use more than +5V. Regular USB wall adapters always provide +5V DC because that's the standard for USB ports. So if your wall adapter is +5V DC and at least 1A (amperage also matters), you should be fine. Naturally if your product is rated for 5V and you supply 9V it's going to have issues.

@marcosvictor49352 жыл бұрын
It would also charge with 0.5A, as it does if you plug into a laptopo or PC USB port that only delivers 0.5A as per USB spec. Also it really shouldn't blow by connecting to fast chargers. As per the USB spec the charger should only send 9V if and ONLY if, the conected device reports as being compatible with 9v charging. so it iterally needs a separate chip only to comunicate with the charger and ask the charger for 9v, otherwise the charger will only send out 5v. Well USB can now go up to 20v...But it's the same thing, only if the device asks for it. I don't believe there's such a chip inside the DS4 so either people are using chinese knock-off chargers or Sony really messed up the Dualshock 4's design and exposed a weakness in the USB standard. But if it's a 5v adapter, it could be 200A, it would not cause any issue, as the amperage is like a capacity, so if the controller want's 0.5A but the charger only has 0.3A to send then the controller simply will not charge, but if it asks 0.5A and the charger is capabnle of 200A, it will simply supply 0.5A and be very uninpressed by the controller.

It'd be interesting to know who is actually at fault here. Fast chargers following specs should never output anything above 5v unless the device being charged requests it. Anything else simply gets 5v output. While it's possible Sony pulled a Nintendo Switch and has the controller sending chargers a bunch of out-of-spec signal data, it seems more likely to be the charger out of spec. USB 3.0 ports have a minimum (per spec) of 0.9A or 900ma. Just above the 800ma that the DS4 is rated for. But as you were saying, the same principle applies to the Amazon FireTV Sticks, they must be supplied by persistent wall-plug USB power brick. Not even a device with a battery. I tried using the USB built into my power strip (has plenty of Amps) and it wasn't stable/clean power for the Stick, and it randomly rebooted. And I mean no one should try plugging into the TV's USB port for power, since the TV shuts them off.

I've been using wall chargers since I first got my ps4. The distance from my couch to my console was just too far to charge it via the ps4. Luckily my controllers haven't had that problem. Adaptive wall chargers dont work like this. They will only supply 5v and only change if the device sends a "gimmie 9v/12/20v" handshake message. The only thing that could cause any issue is the larger amperage (A/mA). The controller will only draw what it can handle (you cant over-do it) however its always wise to charge via the slowest method as will improve battery life over time. (look for 0.5 A / 500 mA, the same as the ps4 output). Myself however will use a 2A charger, and charge my controller twice/4x as fast (probably losing a 75%ish of the battery life). There is also a problem that some cheaper/fake chargers dont supply a steady 5v, instead bouncing between 4-6v, not that it would really cause much damage (they are designed to handle some tolerances) could cause things like the wireless to cut out but only whilst charging.

Good video, and good advice. I for one have had my PS4 controllers since launch, even though the batteries inside no longer hold a charge I still use them wired and they still work perfectly. So anybody out there that has a dead PS4 controller, don't throw it away.
@santasfurball43152 жыл бұрын
Uno if you don't mind meddling around with your controller, the process to exchange the battery is fairly simple. But yh, wired does have it's uses as less latency from your controller input.
@averagefalloutenjoyer1232 жыл бұрын
You can also use it as a PS3 controller wired up like that
@LittleDebbie1877172 жыл бұрын
To put it that way, I always use my controllers wired. That way I can conserve battery power, and they won't run out as long as they're plugged.

I've had the same PS4 controller since I first bought the system, eight years ago. Always charged via the PS4 console. The controllers are well made, surviving countless playthroughs of Bloodborne and Dark Souls 1-3. I have no idea how people go through several controllers, unless they are throwing them around the room.

Iv promised myself to not waste any cashflow on a new controller until i buy the 2nd generation of PS5 whenever it gets avalible, and if ever i buy it. Because simply: Then you get a controller with it! As Sony's controllers hold so good quality thers no reason to waste cash really. I just charge them overnight 👍

@@William_SalibaTrue especially if you buy an extra controller. Theres no better idea to have 2 controllers, so you can plug one for charging while you play with the other. Charging stations not necessary, and in my opinion takes extra space on the shelf. Each to their own opinions however. Always good with options! 👍
@Dark_Jaguar2 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking most devices have to "advertise" they support fast charging in order to receive it from a properly specced "fast charging" adapter. They SHOULD be safe. What must be happening is that the PS4 controller is erroneously reporting itself as "fast charging" when it isn't.

@Dw7freak2 жыл бұрын
Why would you ever plug your controller into a wall charger when there's a perfectly good usb port on the front of the console itself? I thought that was the obvious way you're suppose to charge it. Since that is how you sync the controller and it shows it charging at the same time, it makes sense that that's how you're suppose to charge it.
@SupermanNew522 жыл бұрын
So you can play far away from the console and not sit right up next to it?

Not a PS4 owner (I've only had two PS3s and a PS2), I've learnt very quickly about checking the voltage of chargers because I own several portable DVD players and while most have the same voltage input and output, meaning I can use one adapter for them and save others as spares since the adapter cables don't last long if they're not the thick cable type, I've had at least one that had a different power input. Once you get a device (be it a smartphone, a portable DVD player, a tablet computer or any device that has a wall adapter), check the input and output on the adapter itself and make a mental note of it.
@pootnannies Жыл бұрын
it's not just the voltage that matters. if the charger says 1.5A or 2.0A then that can damage the controller. ds4 can only take 1 amp of current safely, so stick to 5v and 1A chargers.
@AshtonDwyer2 жыл бұрын
Some of those older Samsung chargers only put out half an Amp. Which is what the USB port on the Playstation puts out anyway. But yes, don't use fast chargers. Not to mention if you controller is over 2 years old it's time for a replacement battery anyway. Once again John, important information you left out.

I found a PS4 controller in a thrift store once, for like 3$, Sony-brand, but the wireless didn't worked anymore, but plugged in USB it work fine. So i opened the controller and took out the battery, so the controller is now lighter, AND there is no risk of battery leak with time anymore.

Fast charging is a usb C feature when you connect your device in micro usb, it won't receive any answer to the checkup and will deliver 5V ONLY. Any wall plug that properly respect the fast charging standard will have the same behavior. If you don't have a Wish market kind of wallplug you will NEVER have a voltage above 5V. Absolutely no risk.

A usb wall charger will only provide the higher voltage and current is it receives the correct resistance of several pins. This the PS4 charger does not do. So even a faster charge will supply a standard 5V to a PS4 controller.

I use my DS4 for pc gaming and I made the mistake of charging with my Samsung charger. The result after awhile is a combination of the micro USB port getting worn out and the controller not charging consistently or not charging at all. A better charging option would be to just purchase one of those charging docks that use the bottom of the controllers. That way you won’t have to use the micro USB port and you’ll have safer charging.

DW, I have used the EXACT same charger you warned against in the video for years and I never had any issue. I feel you have zero idea about what you are talking. BUT, there were a few cases of defective fast-chargers sending the 9V accidentally. Usually this does NOT happen, as the fast chargers talk with the device to see which voltage to send and on the case of the controller, which does not communicate it just sends the default 5 volts.

I'm using my smartphone charger on my controler for 7 years now and It's ok. Like some people said, just look into the Voltage and Amperage. Controller is 5V 0,8A. Common chargers are 5V and 1A, its fine.

are you aware that fast charging isn't enable until charger detects if device supports fast charging, if device doesn't support fast charging, it just charges with normal power.

The best tip is NOT to use the mini usb socket to charge your handset use the alternate socket on the inside face. It's far more rugged and the docking stations compatible with that socket are correctly rated, so... Double bonus.
@pofka30002 жыл бұрын
For controller to receive higher than 5v from any fast charger it has to comunicate with charger and ask for it, if any device doesn't support fast charging, the charger gives only 5v and max 2a unless it's a cheap or faulty charger

Ok you got part of it. 5v 1a max. For longest life possible 5v .5a is key. Takes a while to charge but is way better for longest life possible. And do not leave controller charging for extended periods. An hour extra here and there wont cause issue but over night on a wall adapter or such is bad.

I mean it kinda makes sense. If you charge it through the ps4 it goes like Electricity>Socket>Ps4>Ps4 controller But if you charge it through a wall socket it goes like Electricity>Socket>Ps4 controller So I guess the amount of electricity that's coming through the wall socket has to powet the whole Ps4 and the controller, while if you plug it directly into a wall socket, all of the power used to power big things like a pc or ps4, is used to power and charge a small thing like a ps4 controller.

even if you use fast charger, gamepad battery gets what it needs, which is low Amper, under 0.5A probably. you could use 1A thin cables to make sure your dual shock is charging properly, not under high current A.
