I can't believe I could go to William Wordsworth's home and garden! He's one of my favorite poet! I remember so well his lines: I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o’er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze …

Not so much Beatrix Potter, but her friend Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley, who founded the National Trust.......Beatrix Potter ensured that the 4000 odd acres of the Lake District she'd bought would pass to the National Trust on her death.... Although World famous for her books, Beatrix Potter was also very well established as a Champion sheep breeder, although this side of her life is often overshadowed by the children's books she wrote.

I live on the opposite side of Northern England (close to the North Sea coast,) but used to visit The Lake District regularly (about once or twice every year,) until about 10 years ago or so. My circumstances changed then, and as a result I haven't been able to travel back there, for far too long. Though East Yorkshire is my physical home, I've always thought of Cumbria as my spiritual home, to the extent that each and every time we visited the Lakes, I would feel relieved at being back there. In fact, this may seem hard to comprehend for anyone who has never experienced it, but if I'd been away for any length of time, when I eventually returned to the Lake District, on arrival in that wonderful environment, I would experience what I can only describe as feeling my soul exhale with relief, as though I'd been holding my breath for all the time I'd been away. I've reached retirement this year, and when I've managed to sort out a few personal, financial and domestic affairs, I hope to start visiting there again in the next year or two, if only for the odd weekend there, annually. Of course ideally, I'd love to live there permanently, but unless there's a long forgotten rich relative who'll remember me in their will, or I'm lucky enough for the Lottery to smile upon me, I'll have to put up with looking forward to occasional visits, and viewing videos like this on KZbin to get my personal 'Lakes fixes' in the meantime.

Nothing - and I mean, really, absolutely nothing - is more extraordinary in Britain than the beauty of the countryside. Nowhere in the world is there a landscape that has been more intensively utilised - more mined, farmed, quarried, covered with cities and clanging factories, threaded with motorways and railway lines - and yet remains so comprehensively and reliably lovely over most of its extent. It is the happiest accident in history. ..........US born writer, Bill Bryson

steve rust: Cumbria is a made-up county, which came into existence in 1974 solely for administrative and ceremonial purposes, and may just as easily be swept-away in any future local-government reorganization. The Lake District lies within the historic counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, and will remain so because there never has been any Act of Parliament nor other legislation which allows for the abolition of the historic counties of England. In fact, in 2013 Eric Pickles MP, the then Secretary of State for Communuties and Local Government, formally recognized and acknowledged the continued existence of England's thirty-nine historic counties. In addition, in 2014 further meaures were introduced which allows for the names of historic counties to be displayed on road signs and other signs, and for the flags of historic counties to be flown without restriction.

@@anghinetti The historic counties of Cumberland, Westmorland AND North Lancashire! (Though since The Lake District has an identity of its own, which differs so much from the rest of the three original historic counties, it's mostly irrelevent which counties they were, and to group it all under 'Cumbria' seems to make sense from a travel point of view as well as from admistrative and ceremonial ones.)
