Finally got to film a week while in nursing school to show you what my school life is truly like! I take you along as I navigate a new schedule, survive many hours of lecture, refresh my skills, and add some new ones to the list. I know so many of you are working hard and crushing school right now...if you're stressed about losing motivation or a big test know that I'm right there with ya...trust it will pay off in the end. Proud of you.
xoxo, Kiara

a phrase i was taught by a specialist i saw was that “70% of your effort is more than enough” because 100% is overworking and leading to burnout. it saved me a lot of mental anguish when i realised i wasn’t working to my fullest, i was overextending myself in a way that wasn’t serving ME in the first place. i still journal this to myself every so often

@@KiaraMadisen Same girl same! I am a nursing student in the Netherlands and I believe it's way less intense than in the US. However, people told me in the beginning I wouldn't be able to get through it. Well, here I am senior year and I might be able to graduate cum laude. Fingers crossed I get to be a pediatric nurse in the future!

My freshman year, my psychology professor said something that always has stuck with me. "The only limits you'll ever face are the ones you place on yourself" simple but very effective. I'm in OB right now and it hasn't been the easiest rotation, in fact its been my hardest rotation, but God has sustained me and I always go back to this quote!

I am a RN two years out of nursing school. I just wanted to tell you that you are doing a great job! It is a rarity you walk out of sim lab feeling good, but take these as learning experiences. The point is if you make a mistake, it’s on a dummy instead of a real patient and you can learn. You’re doing great keep your head up!

For everything, there is a first time. I say this to myself when I’m lacking confidence about starting a new project or a new task at work. This helps remind me that everyone was new at their job at one time and your first time doing something may not be the best or most accurate but you just have to remember to learn from it!

a quote/phrase I’ve started to apply to my career life to maintain perspective is “brick by brick”. it’s a saying I heard in Will Smith’s recent series on KZbin “Best Shape of My Life”. and the way he explained it really inspired me to look at each day, each moment, each accomplishment just like that. brick by brick. focus on one brick at a time, and before you know it, you’ve built a whole house. but you focus alone on the brick in front of you. making it the best quality you can make it in the time you’re presently in.

I'm a 4th year PsyD student and I always tell myself "I am growing today." I learn something new every day in class and in my clinical work, and so even on days when I make a mistake or feel like something didn't go well that phrase is a great reminder that I am growing through every experience! Even those days when I feel imposter syndrome I can remind myself that learning is a process and that every experience I have contributes to my growth in some way.

I tell myself all the time "You got this!" I'll say it out loud when I'm on runs, before something I'm really nervous about, and definitely to hype myself up for something I'm trying for the first time. I also love the phrase Em Carey says frequently; "If you can, you must." It reminds me that every time I'm questioning what I'm capable of doing and if I should do a certain something even though I'm nervous, I should try it. You never know what could happen by going for the things that scare you! Love you Kiara! This is my first semester of nursing school and I love seeing your vlogs about life right now. Keep going!!

You have always had a knack for making your busiest weeks look somehow organized and put together. Wish I could do that 🤣🤣. Anyways, it is really wholesome watching you do nursing things. In my country, nurses do not really have to go to college and then nursing school but it is really nice to see that this job that many probably do not appreciate enough takes so much effort and time. Teaches you to really be grateful for our medical personnel because you guys really give it your all!

When I was in high school I really struggled with my perfectionism and my need to make sure that everything was just so. During my junior or senior year, I finally figured out that NOTHING is perfect, so I starting telling myself "Practice makes PROGRESS." The only way to get better at something is to practice it - and I also believe in constant improvement which is the idea that we can always be better. Now, I am designing a poster for my classroom that says "Practice makes progress" so my students can see it every day! Best of luck with nursing school - I know you'll be great!!

I'm starting nursing school next semester and am SO nervous (and also excited), but something I will start to live by that someone in the nursing program told me was that now that I'm in the program, I only need to pass. I don't have to worry about getting all A's because I will be getting paid the same amount of money as everyone else in the end. I just need to learn the material, but not get upset by a bad test grade here and there, and that has helped me not feel so anxious going into the program.

A phrase that made an impact in my life was from my mom - "You don't gotta have everything figured out". It took out so much pressure off, given to me by society since high school. I don't know what my "dream" career is and that's ok, what's important is to keep going and keep learning. Think about the future but don't let it stop you from living the present. I graduated from nursing school in may of 2020 and started my career on a progressive care unit specializing in alcohol/drug detox and psychiatric medical dual diagnosis, in the middle of the pandemic. We were severely short staffed with a very difficult patient population. Most days, I’d come home feeling like I ran out of time to do a million and one things, forgot to chart important information, left my oncoming coworker with a messy assignment. It was discouraging and made me question my capability of being a nurse. My mom began saying to me “you can’t save the world in a 12-hour shift” meaning I can’t do everything and save everyone in my shift alone. Somethings have to take back burner to more pressing situations and there are going to be items on the task list that don’t get completed. What’s most important in nursing is that you prioritize tasks appropriately and you are empathetic towards your patients to try and make their day a little better. Recently I switched to pediatric nursing, but I still find myself using this phrase “you can’t save the world in a 12-hour shift”

I find myself thinking back of the excitement I felt when i got into school and using that as a reminder that I do want to be here and this is what I was so excited for. Just because school is loads of work and is challenging, doesn't mean it's negative or not worth it. Surviving the daily grind is what gives us pride and confidence in what we do. Aww girl I hate that feeling...good for you for relaxing...it's such a stressful time. I think my best advice if you're worried about being late is to have a few plans in place to safegaurd yourself and prevent you from cutting it close. For me, I like to wake up super super early and set a seperate alarm every 5-15 min so I must wake up. I also pack stuff I need the night before if I know I will cut it close. My friend used to even track people and knew if they wasn't on the road at a certain time to check in. Whatever works for you, get creative & make it happen. And then don't stress if it happens once or twice... we are all human and sometimes stuff outside our control happens!

Love this, Kiara! Taken from the Steelers coach, Mike Tomlin, I love the phrase “make routine plays routinely”. Not every football game is won by a Hail Mary, but rather by careful, micro advancements up and down the field. It reminds me that before thinking about the big events, we need to focus on being good at the basics. It’s the seemingly little actions and habits that will add most significantly to our growth over time. Success comes from a million little routine plays that add up to something great! 💕

Loved this video! A phrase that my dad ( who is a teacher) always says to me and to his students is “Don’t worry but do care” - quite self explanatory, but basically do your best and care about your work but try not to spend your time worrying and feel overwhelmed! I always say it to myself when I’m trying not to panic with work to calm myself down and remind myself that i’m doing the best I can do and is good enough. X

This is a great one! So easy to fall in that trap & I feel like growing up through the school system has trained us as students that if we are not worrying then we don't care about work, but that's so no true. For me, I notice that worries really interferes with my work, so staying focused on what is in my control is so important!

I love this...and you obvi🤗 I loved learning how to use a feeding pump and injecting insulin. I got so scared the first time and now it's no big deal anymore. I know it's not the "real deal" in a sim lab, trust we do this as well, but try to get as much out of it as you can. It's a protected space for you to learn and make mistakes. I love how much heart and attention to detail they always put in. Anyways there are so many heart sayings but I probably always come back to a very simple one "PROGRESS NOT PERFECTION!" Helps me everytime with my over the top perfectionism and standards so high no one could ever reach them. In work but also in general life. ❤☀️

One of mine is "There is no mistakes in life, only lessons learned". For me this is a lesson or phrase because as you continue onto a particular path in the professional field....whether that be in a study at school that you are dreaming of fulfilling or even a 9-5 job that you are working at to pay the bills, you are going to screw up. You are going to say things that shouldnt be said and eccetra. But that is okay, because its a lesson learned upon you that although you have done such things, when learning why you shouldn't say such things or whatever "mistake" you make, iyts helping you to become a stronger, wise and more mature person. So that you can look back know better for yourself in the long run.

I miss school SO nuch. I miss the routine of it. Having the productivity to go and learn something new in a subject that you enjoy. If I could go back, I probably would. Yet I can't decide what I would go back for. There are so many subjects I would love to go school for.

My career as a manicurist/nail technician lasted 30 + years .... eons ago one of my instructors in Beauty School would walk around when we were doing clients and would whisper phrases to us... one that stayed with me to this day is a simple one... the 5 P's ...Prior planning prevents poor performance .... I swear I still hear it and I have been retired for several years....

It is quite common to appreciate the manner that most Nursing students learn the ways and the Queeps of the Nursing situation in USA and Canada. In Ghana and Nigeria and the cameroons the situation is actually weird and something.
