I like how you use the more polite open palm/hand when "pointing" at people. This is something that I learned in Thailand and have carried with me throughout my teaching career abroad. It makes directions and questions seem less accusatory when teaching. Amazing videos!

Everyone in your comments section is like "your accent is perfect!" But then, quite a few people in the videos seem to be struggling to understand haha. So, as a newbie Vietnamese learner myself, I have no idea how good you actually are-but it seems good for 2.5 years. Much more natural and comfortable sounding than some other learners I've heard, FOR SURE. Nice work with the channel and thanks for sharing!

My accent is definitely not perfect and whoever is saying it's perfect wants to be nice to me or has some other unknown agenda. I can assure you without being humble whatsoever that my accent is far from proper not to mention perfect. This channel is definitely not a channel to learn from since I myself need to learn even more lol. If you want to hear someone with a proper northern accent go for the "Chris Lewis" channel because I record this only for entertainment purposes. In terms of being understood I can have a short chat with people from the North with no problem. Take a seat have some tea, and chat for 30 minutes about simple topics like everyday life. However I give up immediately whenever I need to speak at length with someone from the middle or south of Vietnam. Many Vietnamese watching this channel are Vietnamese from the USA and they are mainly from the south of Vietnam, which is why they struggle to understand me more as visible in the comments. Am I happy with what I have achieved after (actually it's gonna be three and a half years already when I started learning. This video is a few months old, but also without adjusting, I said automatically two and a half years but should have said a little bit more) those years of learning? Definitely! Let me share with you some tips I always give whenever someone asks me (copy and paste mode I prepared like a week ago :)): A lot of patience emotional attachment to a language and learning materials not falling for all those “How to be fluent in 30 days” scams and understanding that listening is more important than speaking paradoxically. I'm not a big fan of textbooks and apps. Speaking comes quite "fast" once your listening skills are on the right level. This is how you can learn Vietnamese but I believe you can apply this to other languages: GRAMMAR: Find the target accent you want to learn and learn grammar and some phrases from KZbin. For the Northern accent check out "Tieng Viet Oi." For the Southern accent try "How To Vietnamese" and "Learn Vietnamese With Annie." SPEAKING: What people very often don't understand is that speaking is not as important as listening. Once your listening skills are good being thrown into speaking for a few weeks with a native speaker works like magic. So, after a few months of KZbin and VTV/Netflix use iTalki with a native speaker teacher who has the target accent (ONLY use Vietnamese to communicate, even if you only know a few words and they will try to explain in English. Quick explanations are okay, but avoid relying on English for 80% of the time). LISTENING: Use the VTV app for the Northern accent (no subtitles at all :/) and Netflix for the Southern accent (use ONLY Vietnamese subtitles no English even if you understand 0%). I know it's going to be hard at the beginning. Trust me I understand the pain. When you go outside to buy something and no one understands you even though you are 100% sure you said it correctly it can be frustrating. We are simply not used to speaking tonal languages but it gets easier. In a world filled with quick shots of dopamine we struggle to focus on one task for a longer period but those who are patient are the ones who succeed. Be patient. You will get there soon; just keep practicing every day for about 2 hours, and believe me it's not much if you really want to learn. As for spare time you can always find it. Good luck!

@@PeterViet Yeah that makes sense. Speaking to people outside of Vietnam, I guess you run into people with a mix of different accents, and the accents seem to make a bigger difference in Vietnamese than some other languages. As a Japanese learner myself, I can also relate to people giving sometimes exaggerated compliments about your language skill haha. For example, Japanese people are just happy that you're learning Japanese, so they tell me that my Japanese is "amazing!" but it's definitely nottt amazing lol, it's probably a low B1. Anyway you seem to be at a level that really enriches your life (and others who you interact with), so that's awesome. And thanks for sharing the language learning tips, as well

His cadence/pattern of speaking is great as he doesn't sound robotic like Phuc Map. But the way he speaks sounds more like Chinese. I think he needs to slow it down a bit and work on pronunciation and tonality. But he's doing a great job overall and I bet in a year, will be great!

My journey was a little bit different since I was living over there, but you can still apply very similar advice, which wouldn't be too different from what I did. Here are some key points: Patience is crucial, along with emotional attachment to the language and learning materials. Avoid falling for scams that promise fluency in a short period, like those "How to be fluent in 30 days" schemes. Understand that paradoxically, listening is more important than speaking when it comes to language learning. Personally, I'm not a big fan of textbooks and apps. Speaking skills develop quickly once your listening skills reach the right level. This approach can be applied not only to learning Vietnamese but also to other languages. Here's a breakdown of my approach: GRAMMAR: Find the accent you want to learn and study grammar and some phrases through KZbin. For the Northern accent, check out "Tieng Viet Oi." For the Southern accent, try "How To Vietnamese" and "Learn Vietnamese With Annie." SPEAKING: Many people don't realize that speaking is not as important as listening. Once your listening skills are good, immersing yourself in speaking with a native speaker for a few weeks can work like magic. So, after a few months of using KZbin and watching VTV/Netflix, use iTalki with a native speaker teacher who has the target accent. Only use Vietnamese to communicate, even if you only know a few words, and they will try to explain in English. Quick explanations in English are okay, but avoid relying on English for 80% of the time. LISTENING: Use the VTV app for the Northern accent (no subtitles at all :/) and Netflix for the Southern accent (use ONLY Vietnamese subtitles, even if you understand 0% of the language). I understand that it can be challenging at the beginning. Trust me, I know the struggle. It can be frustrating when you're confident in your pronunciation, yet nobody understands you when you try to communicate. Tonal languages are simply not something we're used to. However, it does get easier. In a world filled with quick dopamine hits, maintaining focus on a single task for an extended period can be difficult. But those who are patient are the ones who succeed. Be patient, and you'll get there soon. Just practice every day for about 2 hours, and believe me, it's not too much if you're truly dedicated to learning. As for finding spare time, you can always make it happen. Good luck!

@@PeterViet Thank you peter for taking the time to respond i will be using all this information you gave me to further my language studies. You are so right, the language learners that make the most progress are the ones that can ignore all the dopamine apps and focus on the boring stuff. I always thought if i was listening to a language and understood nothing then iw as wasting my time i didn't actually know it could benefit my language learning. Thank you peter i will try to apply these to my Mandarin studies

You need to work on your Vietnamese tones. For example: "Trâu Quỳ" đọc thành "Trấu Quỵ" "Gia Lâm," đọc thành "Giạ Lâm". "Hoa" đọc thành "Hoá". Different tones of the same exact word have different meaning. Work on the six Vietnamese tones and you will be more understood so you can enjoy it more.
