I grew up in the high alps in the 60ies with tons and tons of snow.... but I have to admit the biggest snowcover I ve ever seen, was frequently in the Sierra Mountains in the 80ies and 90ies. So nothing unusual Id say. Be glad to get some water into your reservoirs - as drought will kick in soon!

Good grief that's a lot! The general rule of thumb is a foot of snow for every 11 inches of rain, which means over 16 inches fell as rain! Look out when it melts!

If somebody doesn't mind taking the time to answer, I have a question. I love learning about the weather, particularly severe weather like tornados and hurricanes. I live in MI, where we get all four seasons, but FAR FAR away from Cali. I've been to the smokies in TN numerous times. Favorite place in the states, and I've been told the mountains in the west make the Appalachians look like little hills! So between the deserts and the mountains, CA has always been a bit of a wild card, when keeping track of their weather norms, especially seeing that snow on those palm trees! I'm aware that the mountains have always gotten snow, but, do the areas shown in this video, ever even get snow? Or is this truly a freak of nature weather event?

The Sierra Nevada mountain range gets snow every winter. This year is very unusual though - it's the 2nd most snow ever for the area. What makes it different from Michigan snow is multifold. First, in Michigan you often get lake effect snow. They don't have lake effect snow in the Sierras, but a similar phenomenon is the atmospheric river - a flow of warm, moist air that continues for days. When that air runs into the mountains it is forced to rise, which then cools it, and it can then precipitate as snow in the winter. Second, Michigan is relatively flat. I know - Mount Bohemia, Marquette Mountain - but the tops of your "mountains" is around 1200 ft. Multiply that by 10 for the Sierras. Third is related to first - the temperature difference between the coast and the tops of those mountains is amazing. Just today - 3/30/2023 the peak at Mammoth in CA at 12,000 ft it is 9 F. In Point Arena, on the coast directly West, it's 47. Fourth is the volume. You measure snow in inches. The Sierra's measures snow in feet. Returning to Mammoth Mountain, they have had a total of 702 inches of snow this season. 58 feet. If it didn't pack down and melt a little, can you imagin a 5 story building buried in snow?

They have a name for it - Sierra Cement. The 2nd day the entire ski resort was closed due to snow. The 3rd day was awesome.
