the things that blows my mind in this episode is that when Naomi steps out onto the planet it is the first time in her life she's ever been outside. Same goes for all the belters. They're born, grow, live and die inside. That "inside" may be the inside of a ship, inside of a space station, inside of a habitat, inside of an asteroid or inside of a space suit, but it's all enclosed. Never breathed air that wasn't piped in, never seen a distant horizon, never been able to look up and see a sky that wasn't just the blackness of space.

That landing on Ilus is SO GOOD. Naomi taking her first steps on a planet, seeing the familiarity yet strangeness of a truly alien world, and more.

The sense of wonder on Naomi's face and the sheer joy that Holden was just radiating watching her. Such a great scene.

Dominique Tipper is _such_ a good actor. Just like when Bobbie went to Earth in season 2, she really gets across the idea that she's never seen sky except in pictures.

I'd say it's less the Protomolecule in Proto-Miller wondering what the rain tastes like and more the Miller in the Proto-Miller. If you recall, the protomolecule absorbed Miller and is reassembling him in this new form that is useful to it. It can kill him and rebuild him as many times as it wants. And last season when Holden asked Proto-Miller what he was, one of the things he said in his reply was "when I exceed my boundary conditions, that's when they kill me." So when Miller's personality starts to shine through, the protomolecule hits the reset button.
@MattNolanCustom8 ай бұрын
Right. And the original Miller did ask Holden what rain tastes like in S1 Ep10.

Let's not forget in Season 1, the the real Miller asked Holden what rain tastes like while they were trying to escape Eros and he told Havelock earlier that the reason why he wore a het was to keep off the rain. I think wondering what the rain taste like is more of a Belter thing considering it doesn't rain in space. The Protomolecule terraformed planets, I think it would know what rain taste like.

‘Next clue to the case’. Season 1 Ep 1. ‘Peaches’ = ‘Peach Melba’ an old school classic French dessert. Belters first (by months), the Inners next (crash land), the Rocinate last (by a week or so). Bobbie was dishonorably discharged from the Martian Marines.
@michaelnolan69518 ай бұрын
Hmm, almost. The dessert was invented by a French chef (Escoffier) in 1892 or or 1893 at the Savoy hotel in London to celebrate Dame Nellie Melba, an Australian opera singer. (Melba was performing in Wagner's opera "Lohengrin" at Covent Garden at the time and the and the Duc of Orleans threw Melba a dinner party at the Savoy. (Thanks, wikipedia!)

We might remember, back on Eros (pretty sure it was Eros) Miller said the same line to Holden, "I wonder what that rain tastes like..." The breakaway from the Investigator's set line of action definitely gives you something to consider... And I do love the fallout of a literal species changing event like this. Every faction is bound to have some reaction to suddenly having 1300 habitable systems available.

We are not advised as to what dangers might be lurking on the other side of those newly opened rings. After the threat to Earth posed by Eros, it could easily be argued that exploration and colonization of planets should be very gradually done with great care and caution. It's not "old hatreds" that caused that little space battle at the beginning of this episode. It is just a difference of opinion as to the extent of the dangers that still might exist on the far side of the many Rings, with people having no hope for their futures taking a different stance than a leader responible for the continued existence of humanity.

You're right that Avasarala can't control everyone. While her reticence and caution is understandable, the way to ease the public pressure would have been to have a vigorous scientific exploration program underway to make it look like she was actively doing something...and actually _be_ doing something necessary and useful. I disagree with Drummer about the Ganymede refugees one day forgetting they were Belters. I think they'd always remember their heritage...their children will probably always have a rite of passage of doing a spacewalk to get their Belter tats. The Illus landscape is a quarry outside Toronto. Alex should have also had a significant amount of trouble adapting to Illus. He's never been exposed to the open air and horizon of a planetary surface either, and not on any surface at Earth-like gravity. He should have been blinking and stumbling like the sailors we saw step out on Earth with Bobbie. Security Chief Murtry said some significant things about the situation and his role to the (deceased) captain of the Edward Israel as they were descending. After the Ganymede refugees discovered lithium on Ilus, Royal Charter Energy (RCE, an Earth company) got a charter from Earth and Mars (the OPA wasn't invited to that meeting) to take over the planet for their own profit. Murtry said his mission for RCE is to remove the Belters from Ilus so that RCE has sole control of the planet's lithium. Claim-jumping Belters is what he's been doing for Earth companies all along. The Edward Israel shuttle could have landed anywhere, but they chose to land on the Belters' pad in a Bogart move to prove their dominance. Murtry moved quickly to state _he'd_ give Holden the lay of the land because being an Earther like Holden, he figures Holden's dealings should be with him, and he's establishing that he's in charge of the situation. At least he intends to be. Peaches (Melba) was on the Roci with Amos for about eight months while they traveled from the Ring back to Earth, where Peaches was found guilty for mass homicide and sentenced to life in prison.

You're right about Miller in S1 Ep10, but the Protomolecule from Phoebe did not terraform any planets. It made a ring. It was a super-information-dense non-sentient AI nano-machine swarm powered by various kinds of radiation. I don't think it ever tasted anything. Certainly not in the way that chemicals do things to human taste buds and generate sensations in the brain.

it did keep going at its current velocity, as did Ashford and the "virtual camera" through which we watched the scene. Stopping accelerating and continuing at constant velocity looks like stopping when you are following something and there is no large scale background reference

Not so much a "gap" between seasons as SyFy cancelled the show after Season 3. Loads of crew and a fair few actors went off to other things (notably the FX supervisor). A whole bunch of fans went hard to get the show picked up. Someone hired a plane to fly a message over Amazon HQ! Jeff Bezos announced they were picking it up at a space technology conference that the cast were at. It was insane. Fun times. Amazon then tried to cancel it again but due to COVID didn't have anyone around to rip the sets down and no way to start up new shows, but that's another story...

I don’t recall loads of crew leaving. Lots of crew stayed, especially since the winter shooting season in Toronto gets traditionally slow, allowing for most of the S3 crew to be available for S4. (Not to mention, people wanted to come back.)

@@hyperspacey They had a pretty high retention rate but S3 was my first, so I can’t say I knew everyone on the crew or pretend my perception was accurate. As you said, it’s been a while. If I recall correctly, there may have been a department loss (like grips?), a handful of individuals, and a few HODs or keys, due to scheduling but a lot of departments returned, in part or in whole. The show has always belonged to and been produced by Alcon Entertainment, who licensed the rights to various companies around the world in order to finance it. Amazon has had the streaming rights for the show in the US since the very beginning. SyFy had the live broadcast rights in the US for the first three seasons. They paid the lion's share for that to Alcon, but later realized their deal wasn't working out for them anymore. SyFy announced that they wouldn't continue to license the show on May 10th, 2018, after broadcast of S03E05 "Triple Point". And already 16 days later, on May 26th, 2018, it was announced that Amazon would pick it up. Amazon negotiated for the show's worldwide exclusive rights, even for previous seasons, which in Europe for example lead to the release of season 3 being delayed, as the show used to be on Netflix there... seasons 1 and 2 were moved from Netflix to Prime Video, where season 3 finally released in February 2019. Season 4 then released globally on Prime Video on December 12th, 2019. Also, I've never heard of "Amazon trying to cancel the show but not succeeding due to COVID". Do you have any sources for that?
