A wildcamping DISASTER 3am Bail out in DANGEROUS CONDITIONS

This was an incredible night which started so well and ended in disaster. this could easily have been a very dangerous situation had it not been for my knowledge of the area and being experienced in navigation in these conditions.
A sequence of unexpected events led to a bail out situation..........

Lesson's here for anyone - 1) Have the right equipment for the location and time of year. Your better even in a cheap vango such as a Banshee 200 than a "lanshan style" tent if the wind picks up. Attach extra guylines and use the appropriate pegs. 2) Choose better site to pitch (as in on the wider view with the drone there where better protected sites) 3) Always carry a spare torch or batteries that can last 10 hours+ (nights are long in winter). 4) Not mentioned in the vlog but alwasy carry a bivy bag (even a cheap plastic one). You slip solo and sustain injury with a lower limb fracture or head injury where you are incapacited to move at this time of year its about waiting until help can get to you. Given high winds and poor vis its highly unlikely the SAR bird will be able to get team members up the hills quicker to stabilise you or equally extract if need urgent surgery. A bivy is something you can generally crawl into when injured to get out of the wind and rain, and provide protection to insulation such as sleeping bag. Good to see you had a foam silver matt. Together these items can make the difference between dying of hyperthermia and still be alive when help arrives The amount of people i see wild camping that take an inflatable matt but no back up - not much good blowing a gale, smashed legs and unable to blow up or on terrain where it would fail. 5) If going into area's that you perceive you will not be able to raise the alarm, think about other options (garmin messenger etc) when solo. Leaving a note in the car along with location and expected return time for family to be frank if your out on the hill this time of year in rain, windchil below zero and injuried, its probably going to be a recovery job not a rescue. Good to see you kept a cool head, makes a massive difference, the amount of times bad incidents are then snowballed by people making poor decisions when the adrenaline is up and not thinking clearly. Glad you got back to the car ok, stay safe and whilst the above might be perceived as negative, everyone thinks they will never have an accident, but they happen and if your not prepared this time of year your family can pay a dear price for an innocent night on the hill. Hope you have many more nights out in the wild !!

In winds like this the best option is to take out the poles and use the tent as a bivybag until dawn. But good thing you had your car close!

Thanks graham appreciate it. What a night it was ... I could handle the improvisation for Pillow and cutlery etc 🤣 but the damage to the tent rendered it impossible. Always takle life with humour that's what I think. The tent is great and I will remedy the damage and use it again for sure I'll modify the tops of the poles and the housing to avoid future slippage. Pleased u enjoyed it mate ATB Simon

Watching this one was like watching Titanic - you KNOW it's all going to go wrong, but I couldn't help but hope that you'd have the night peaceful night you were hoping for! I also found myself looking forward to seeing how your trekking pole tent handled the conditions, but this obviously ended up not being a very fair test of it 😬 And that cold weather killing off batteries is a real bugger. Mate that’s exactly what happened to me up Skye minus the subzero temp. 1 in the morning making a head for the mainland before they closed the bridge. Fully horizontal tent in the wind but it held strong, left me with 3 90degree poles which were once straight
