I really don't get why ground pounding is considered un-sportsmanlike? Usually when you hit them in the air the meat is full of pellets. Shooting them on the ground you can usually get headshots and save almost all the meat. Plus the dogs don't do all the work. That's just my 2 cents though it actually seems very fun to hunt with dogs. Just not for me, too loud. I like walking an old two track and just keep my eyes on the trail and under the ferns or in trees.

I would say that historically much of the upland game hunting, especially with dogs, is drawn from our English friends. Upland game enthusiasts have always had a 'sporting' mindset, as the English did, where there were certain rules for hunting that were followed, and that taking a bird in the air was the proper way of giving the bird a sporting chance. You know? I read a book on ruffed grouse hunting when I was a teen where the author wrote that those who took part in ''groundlooping' or shooting treed birds should be 'hung up by their unmentionables.' My dad always got a kick out of that word, 'unmentionables.' And the mindset, too. We took them to eat, at the end of the day. Michigan looks nice. I am in Indiana, and I am getting back this fall to ruffed grouse, either in the U.P. of MI, or back in New England. My dad had English Setters, and I'll tell you brother, you don't realize how many birds were going to let you walk right by until you've hunted with a good dog.

grouse hunting with a dog. Subscribed Can't wait for this season, I spent more time last year hunting moose than I did working birds with my dog.

Are you using a GoPro? If so, the video would be even better on a medium field of view setting. The fish eye effect would go away, and you could probably see the birds. Nice footage and shooting. I liked and subbed.

Awesome video! I wish my dogs could listen that well, haha. Isn't it a bit dangerous shooting that close to trees? I don't bird hunt much but when i do, i'm in an open corn field. Haha
@waggs958810 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by dangerous?
@cotaloc61910 жыл бұрын
Pellets bouncing off the trees and hitting you.
@waggs958810 жыл бұрын
I think that's really rare since most trees are soft enough to absorb the enery from the pellets. I've been grouse hunting for like 8 years and I've accidentally shot trees that were like 3 feet away from me. And either it will look like a woodpecker got a hold of the tree or the tree will fall down.

Can you let us know make and model of the gun? Do you worry about beating up the gun/scratching it in those woods? Or it just adds character? Thanks for the reply

I hunt ruffed grouse and pheasants with dogs all the time too. the way you hunt pheasants with a dog works a lot better than doing it that same way when hunting grouse. but Its always more funw ith the dogs. always makes for tough shots walking through the brush aiming at tiny little windows to get the grouse on the ground. nice shooting!

It wasn't obvious from the video whether you see the birds in the trees or on the ground. Or do you only see them after your dog flushes them? I have been trying to hunt grouse in Central NY, without a dog, for four years. I have yet to get a bird. The only time I've seen a grouse is after I accidentally flushed one. Then it is probably less than 0.1 sec before they reach heavy, dark wooded cover. Never enough time to even mount the gun. They never seem to be more than 10 feet from heavy cover. Got any advice for me?
@ConsummateSportsman8 жыл бұрын
Get a good grouse dog :)

+The Consummate Sportsman Wish I could. I take care of my 91 year old mother, and she would trip over a dog. Frigid winters. I can't leave a dog outside.

+Austin Johnson In four years hunting grouse I've yet to see one standing still, either on the ground or in a tree. Only time I have seen them is when they take flight. I am a very quiet stalker too. I am constantly scanning the ground and trees, and listening for them. I never hear anything but squirrels, chickadees, crows, and the rubbing sound trees make. ONCE I heard drumming. But that was in the spring, after grouse season ended. Maybe there is a difference between the birds in MN and the birds in Central NY. I used to live on a small pond in Florida. The Great Blue Herons were so unafraid of people I found myself eye to eye one night. He was peering into my apartment through the sliding glass door! Contrast that to the Herons we have here in Central NY. They are EXTREMELY wary of people. You have to be very stealthy to get within 100 feet of one.
@SteelTiiTan7 жыл бұрын
My advice would be to just walk along looking around on the ground usually I spook them for a second and hear a little movement on leaves, but in my experience the later in the day it is, or the colder/more snow on the ground their is then the more likely they will be in a tree. But I definitely walk by way more than I see so when my brittany comes with me I might not always get the best flying shots but I definitely see more. I've only ever shot one grouse out of the air without my dog.

Your Mom has a great caring son it sounds. :) Find some old public land logging roads. overgrown old backwoods trails with cover and seed, berry thickets, etc......gravel. You'll find the birds ! :) cheers
