Excellent video on some pretty impressive equipment. You mentioned prior to turning the small bowl that you can’t use a screw chuck to mount small pieces on the lathe. I use one all the time, being my favorite and fastest way to mount small blanks securely. It’s a homemade chuck with a 9/16 protruding wood screw that I use a 5/64” drill bit for the hole in cross grain blanks. The screw is centered and epoxied in about a 2” piece of oak with a tenon made to fit my 2” chuck. I have some hardboard spacers to mount pieces as thin as say 7/8” thick and still have enough space to turn a shallow bowl without piercing through the bottom. I would imagine with the spacer/s I could drill a hole not much deeper than 3/8” and still have a secure hold because the screw is quite aggressive and really bites into the wood. If I can tighten the blank by hand decently hard against the flat of the screw chuck it is a very positive hold, the friction against the face will be plenty to handle the rotational forces you produce cutting on a smaller diameter piece like your small bowl. You really should try to make one. You’ll fall in love with it if you like doing smaller things. This was an excellent review. I have a home made screw chuck for my 4” jaws also for medium sized projects. I’ve saturated the tenon on the homemade chucks with thin CA glue to have a strong tenon that can handle being clamped down on by the jaws repeatedly. Larger blanks I will use my factory wood worm screws in my 4” chuck. I’ve never had a blank come off the screw of my homemade chuck. In my opinion, it’s the best way to quickly mount wood so long as your grain orientation of the blank from that flat surface is one you can live with. If I need to orient my grain more evenly on say a live edge bowl I will turn between centers and tilt the blank first to align my grain the way I need it before truing it up. Take care, Scott
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton 2 күн бұрын
Thanks Scott, what I should have said is that you cant use the worm screw that comes with t chuck for this small size. If course you can make your own that can be decreased or increased in size :)

Helpful tip: I have a fair few Nova chucks, which the RP ones are based on. As you found, the little leather discs and grub screws are really fiddly to fit - in fact I gave up and just used the grub screw without the disc. However, I lost a grub screw some time ago, and when searching for a replacement, I found that you can buy ones with a nylon pad already attached. I bought a pack and have fitted them to all my chucks; they are much easier to fit, and do the same job as the leather pads.

Interesting idea, If they make a 100mm base jaw then you could have 50mm insert jaws. Solves the major problem with the original jaw system of spending hours on your knees searching for that dropped screw! Very pleased the base jaws are compatible with the SC4 (and by implication others using the Nova system as well)
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton 6 күн бұрын
Exactly! I was thinking the same, I'm going to suggest it to them. Also why does that one screw you drop always disappear into shavings 😂
@PeteTwistedTrees

Hi Mike, fortunately you answered the question I had having seen the advert for this system. I am pleased that jaws will fit the SC4 and 3 chucks, I assume that the jaws will be available separately rather than only with a chuck. Like many turners I have multiple SC4 chucks already, therefore I would not invest in a new incompatible system.

If you can remove a set of jaws from a chuck and fit another set of jaws in 3 minutes, you ought to submit that time to the Guinness book of world records. That's a great time even with a hole in your garage door to keep your lathe chuck cool! You certainly didn't display that promise when fitting the retaining grub screw to the chuck! I am slightly more mature than you and chuck jaw screws are the bain of my life, the beauty of these jaws is once you have inserted the screws, when in use one just has to loosen and tighten them as each set of jaws has its own screws which can be left in position. I have mine on pre order and can't wait for them to arrive. Great video Mike

@ have a look at a wood called Gidgee, Sorry I expect there’s a Latin name but I’m not familiar with it but its very very hard to turn but it comes up beautiful. The first time I saw it I thought it was baker light, like the old light switches. Don’t worry about costs because you give me and a lot of my mates lots of inspiration. Miliput sales must be going through the roof down here due to you.

@@Bazz272 That would be amazing, I have heard of it and know it is a very hard wood, right up there with the hardest, I would love to try some!!! Thanks so much

Cheers Mike, useful demo. As well as performance the key issue this is trying to solve is the speed of swapping jaws. Your timing change over was good, but it looked like it could be quicker if the screws were screwed in further in the jaws you're placing into the chuck before you start?
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton 4 күн бұрын
I still need practice to be smooth. The screws can't be in too far or they get caught on the edge unfortunately ☺️

Interesting Mike. My first impression is I do not care for just one screw holding the jaws in. But the jaws you were supplied are for smaller work so that just might be fine. For very quick changing the EZ tools chuck seems to be nice. But having 7 sets if chucks I most likely will not be doing either one. Well unless someone wants to send me one LOL

I really appreciate the demo of this new product and may have a new contender for my top picks of what to go with! I don't have a lathe capable of turning beyond 10" at the moment but will be getting the new lathe soon so just curious what is the maximum diameter turning you'd do with that largest chuck (I assume was the 100mm), or do you have a set of jaws or a separate chuck entirely for the very large turnings? Thanks again for the vid!
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton 6 күн бұрын
Thanks, with the 100mm I have turned 22" platter without a problem. Anything larger I have an 8" faceplate

Interesting design. They've improved on how the Axminster odonnell system works. However, with a design like this, it all depends on the accuracy of the milling as to how well it will align and run true. Can't say I've been very impressed having to send back two SC2 chucks due to poor milling.
