No colonies is good. Except for the period under the monarchy, the colonies always were a costly trouble unworthy of the state which only benefited a few oligarchs. France lost astronomic amounts of money with the colonisation. It wasn't worth the trouble. Algeria : the events of the war between France and the born-dead Algerian nation took place in a city where lived 60 000 "natives" and 5 "Europeans". That's the colonisation for you. And it was horrendously expensive for the state. The fact it continuated could only be explicated by the corruption of the parliament.
