It's a failure! Let's not sugar coat it by calling it 'honorable failure' Nothing worked, extremely fragmented story telling, very tacky CGI! It didn't have geek out moments of science fiction nor it had the wonder of a fantasy! Poor Casting choices, Acting across the board was mediocre!

He pretty much explained my feelings when I saw the film. It has a lot of good stuff going for it, but it does not gel together as one would wish. I think this is going to be this generation's "Hook." You love it when growing up, but once you become an adult, yeah...

I loved Selma, and heard good things about 13th, but this always sounded like a weird fit for Ava DuVernay (like when Ang Lee did Hulk) Also, considering this film is underperforming at the box office, it makes you wonder why studios still risk $100+ million budgets on non-franchise live-action films these days, most of the time you won't make enough to justify it, audiences just don't turn out really for stuff that isn't an established franchise, at least not enough to make your film a certified hit.

Charlie Panayiotou alright but then there are movies such as Baby Driver that do very well for original movies. Baby Driver might not have been that expensive but there was still a lot of money involved.
@charliepanayiotou43056 жыл бұрын
Baby Driver cost $34 million, if this film had cost $34 million it'd be faring a lot better

Charlie - where do you get that this is a "non-franchise live-action film"? This is an adaptation of the first in a series of 9 extremely popular novels, that furthermore are part of shard universe alongside another 20 novels. This was absolutely meant to be the start of a big franchise.

Are people getting totally blind to the ugly vapidity of obvious CG imagery? Here's a clue: if you can tell you are looking at DIGITAL IMAGES, then it has failed. If you think it might be 'there' in the sense of a real thing like a physical effect, then it has succeeded. Did nobody notice that Oprah isn't even making rough eye-contact with anybody she is apparently supposed to be speaking to in the this film? They don't even try to make it look like it's not all greenscreen.
@masseysmoviemadness14116 жыл бұрын
Why are you not making that leap of faith? Because it's bad. Simple.

I feel one of the ironies of the year is that this corporate, inclusive love-in failed, and Eli Roth, that most appalling of sophomore edgelords, looks like he's going to make a charming success out of another American kids' classic.

I haven't watched this yet but I'm betting I'm going to like it. Almost all the Disney films I like are their live action films that aim high and miss while doing bad at the box office. I have this weird fascination with their non-franchise films. I think it started with Condorman (I still love that film and it's still the best superhero film ever made) and my favorite live action Disney film Return to Oz (such an incredibly under-rated film) but has continued through the years, The Black Hole, Popeye, The Rocketeer, John Carter, Tomorrowland...

So, do people generally not rate The Lovely Bones? I thought it was rather marvellous. But I didn't have the advantage of hearing any reviews first.
@medes55976 жыл бұрын
The book is something very unique and special. Almost everyone who dislikes it is a fan of the book. The Lovely Bones is weirdly empty in how Heaven is portrayed (like a screensaver not a place, as many said) and over reliant on special effects. The characters weren't well developed and... Really it just totally failed for me. I can't think of a good thing about it. If you liked it then that's great. I don't think everyone who dislikes Lovely Bones is influenced by reviews. I think it's simply that the book was such an incredibly unique and perfect novel that relied heavily on internal monologue and language that any adaptation that tried to capture it was going to have an up hill struggle and Jackson's portrayal of Susie's Heaven (which the author strongly disliked and vehemently argued with him about) and his decision to rely so heavily on computer imagery in that regard ultimately doomed his adaptation in the eyes of a great many people. It kind of fails to have the same emotional impact of the book even if you put the heaven sequences to one side. He somehow took a book lauded for its dense, rich characterisation and turned it into a world of shallow, poorly written people. Its somewhat telling that audience scores tended to be much lower than the critics, as critics enjoyed the premise and ideas and kind of wanted to like the film. Audiences were in general very cold on the film, and it's the worst selling of any of Jackson's post-LOTR movies. Alice Sebold, the author of the book, was disappointed enough to consider taking her name off the finished film. Sorry I ended up rambling the more I thought about how little I liked it. Like I said, to each his own and if you liked it then great because I honestly wanted to love it. I don't think anyone disliked it because of critical reception. Looking reviews up, they were much kinder to it than audiences are now, where the general opinion is that its utter trash.

"...feeling the film didn't love her back because...hadn't seen herself represented on screen." I've always enjoyed watching samurai movies. I'm not asian, or Japanese, or a 17th century samurai. I was not 'represented' on screen. It didn't stop me enjoying those movies. I've never expected a film to 'love me back' (whatever that means).
