My real issue with Ava is her pretentious attitude. I had heard about her from Selma and the Oscars so White movement after her lack of nominations. I respected the fact she was a talented filmmaker within the field she was in. Then she got offered the holy grail of Black Panther and she turned it down. The reasons that leaked including not wanting to make a comic book movie and sticking with original films of a higher caliber. This, of course, annoyed me because if anything could be a huge step forward it would be a female directing a big budget superhero film. Then in a big switch a roo she decides to direct A Wrinkle in Time despite it not being an original film. As far as I'm concerned she chose politics over smart filmmaking and no one steered her straight. There was obviously no real oversight because anyone with eyes could see the movie had lifeless trailers. Chasing after a female led film with no must see stars aside from a side lined Chris Pines was obviously a terrible idea.

Honestly, it turned out for the best this way. She screwed up on a movie that (relatively) very few people care about, as opposed to one that people already had years of investment in from the connected works already out.

The only thing I know about the film is that Oprah advertised it as a triumph for women and feminism. Which told me that I'm not the target audience. I think that I read the book a long time ago. If the book was a feminist masterpiece, I really don't remember.

The problem is Millenials believe that anyone regardless of background has the ability to do "anything" but only if they were given the chance. This was drilled into them by their parents. They were told they could do anything, be anything, which is ok but the message left out the crucial parts. Like you can do anything if you work hard enough at it, or you get the right education. Another problem is parents and educators "shielded" Millenials growing up from Failure, they were never allowed to experience it. The losing side in a Little League game won a "Participation Trophy", teachers in many school systems were Allowed to Fail kids on Tests and kids weren't Allowed to Fail Grades. This in addition to Neo-Feminism and White Guilt has given birth to the SJW Movement today. It all started with the parents...they are to blame for this disaster.
@thestoiccatholic7012
@thestoiccatholic7012 7 жыл бұрын
I would also add that parents ignoring their children and letting liberal teachers raise them along with daycare is also to blame. That problem is especially bad in millennial parents. They just heightened what they learned from their parents behavior.

Peter Franks I haven't been following this movie (though I remember reading the book during middle school), but I have just heard about how multi-cultural they tried to make the main character's family. It was to the point that they had to rewrite the brother as being adopted, because there's no way in hell he could fill their quota for a token Asian and believably be the result of white and black parents. How fucking ridiculous has this PC bullshit gotten that we can't even have a FAMILY of characters stick to one race, two tops?

The film’s screenwriter, Jennifer Lee, laughably dismissed critics who blamed her for removing Christianity from the movie. Lee told an interviewer that making the film Christian would be “exclusionary” in a film that wanted to celebrate “diversity” and “inclusion.” As a result, millions of Christians are excluding it from their plans.

I knew this movie would bomb. It’s based on an old book that most people know very little about and they cast Oprah Winfrey in it. News flash to Hollywood, not nearly as many people like Oprah as you think. She is a racist who became famous because mostly women, many of whom are white, watched her show on a daily basis and now she wants to declare that many of the very people who supported her all of those years have to die. They are somehow racist despite the fact that they helped make a black woman one of the wealthiest people in the world. The white middle class is sick of being dumped on by the mainstream media and conceited Hollywood celebrities.

The movie was a swing & a miss and that's bad because this was a "no brainer". They could've made this in their sleep, it wasn't hard. So to see a movie that was made with such incompetence with a huge budget and the Disney logo on it was mind boggling. The two people I was with walked out after 20 minutes and watched Strangers 2, it was that bad. On the marketing side, Disney failed to realize how they were driving away their own target demographic. They laser-focused on minority families (putting Oprah on the cover, making hay over Ava) but announced they'd scrubbed all Christian themes from the script while completely missing the fact that most minority families are Christian.

I'm not going to try to defend the mess of a film (didn't see it, but could tell from the trailers that it was gonna suck), but character size on the poster usually has to do with how important that character is and how famous an actor is playing the character. The main character is female, and the marketing was clearly focused on the three major female characters (the Mrs. Ws) that are played by big-name actresses, rather than the unknown child actors playing the male secondary characters. Chris Pine's character is completely off-page until the last fourth of the book. Unless it was an adaptation that had cast some super well-known child/teen actor as Charles Wallace or Calvin (idk, like Jonathan Taylor Thomas fresh off Simba or something), I would expect the female characters to dominate all of the marketing.

Funny when you take the Christianity out of the Christian book and make a movie from it, the heart and soul of the work is lost entirely. Removing the religious themes, which were _integral_ to Madeleine L'Engle's series (known as the Time Quintet), left them with nothing of substance. But of course Hollywood has long since been devoid of any real Faith, and many there hold exceptional hatred towards Christianity, so their collective actions make sense. To them.
@andresacosta4832
@andresacosta4832 7 жыл бұрын
So I'm gonna assume that my weird story that heavily uses Christian themes yet heavily satirizes them and draws from apocrypha and at times makes up its own ideas (such as Pilate being the real culprit behind Jesus' death and the Jewish priests are exonerated), uses more Jewish and Gnostic inspiration at times, and emphasizes things like Sodom and Gomorrah being destroyed for inhospitality, the Nephilim being the cause of the flood, the fact that Jesus was a fucking socialist, etc. will somehow be proof that Hollywood actually can make a story with Christian themes and actual substance.

Gornad Huckshucx To a degree, I'll concur. But usually having faith means that there's a solid foundation for morality. In Hollywood (and in countries like China, where real religion is banned) we constantly hear of unspeakably vile things that have been done there. Pedophilia, sexual abuse, etc. - and for all their airs of moral superiority, the denizens of Hollywood are complicit in this vile actions, because it's the worst-kept secret there. And they do nothing; there are even those that believe that these kinds of things aren't bad.

Joshua Fogg You don't need religion to be moral. Hell, look at all the pedophilia and sexual abuse that goes on within churches. The Watchtower Society (Jehovahs Witnesses) is currently being fined every day for refusal to release the names of members who have raped or molested members (including children) within their congregation.

Hardy Joe I think the modern extreme version started on Reddit, in a place called "ShitRedditSays" which was supposed to be about finding and mocking stupid comments elsewhere on the site, but degenerated into seeing racism and homophobia in every little thing ("black magic" or "straight and true" for instance). The people from there moved into Tumblr and pretty much dominate it, and it grew from there into a multitude of other hobbies and, eventually, real life.

I was dying throughout the whole movie because it was so awful -- bad pacing, pretentious dialogue, bland or pointless characters, list continues. I was trying to keep it together because I thought my wife was enjoying it. When the movie ended, I asked her what she thought and she HATED it for all the same reasons I was thinking! At least this will heightened everyone else's curiosity towards the book. Books are mostly better anyway because nothing is compromised for the sake of making someone else happy. For better or worse, it's the author's vision. But then again, Hayao Miyazaki did an incredible job of adapting Howl's Moving Castle into anime movie form, and it doesn't feel like a cheap knockoff, but something that he loved and truly wanted to do! I wish we can go back to making good movies again without all the liberal nonsense.

I just checked DuVernay's IMDB page. Apparently she only directs movies if there's a Black female lead. How can someone make a career if she only wants to direct Black women like herself. First that reveals a great inability to build other kinds of characters. Second, this is very limiting. It might be the way to go if you're an activist, but reflects poorly on the career of any movie director.

All the Disney live-action movies are garbage. Remaking half their classics into live-action is both pointless and nothing more then a cash grab. Almost as bad as when they were shitting out those god-awful direct to DVD sequels back in the early 2000's. The original Beauty and the Beast was nominated for Best Picture back in the day. Why remake it? What is there to be improved upon? Maleficent was almost a complete bastardisation of the original character from Sleeping Beauty in attempt for Disney to make it's own version of Wicked. And know plans for a live-action remake of the Lion King are underway. This is the most pointless and dumbest of all purely cause at least with the previous remakes they at least had human characters. Lion King hasn't a single human character at all, so we're basically getting a cartoon remake done in CG instead of 2D animation.

I am SOOO glad this bastardization of a good, classic story flopped spectacularly. Every time I saw the trailer for this before another movie I'd just flip the screen off. The pandering was just so God damn blatant, and they changed the race of almost every character except the dad and Calvin (and somehow they couldn't even get it right that he was an awkward redhead, the most historically marginalized group of whites, but I guess they didn't go there because he's a white male and we're not allowed to feel bad for them ever). And making Charles Wallace adopted just so he could be yet another race? Jesus h mother fucking christ. A family of white scientists with smart kids makes no fucking sense right? Let's make a mish mash of races family that aren't even all related to each other but are by some chance all incredibly smart anyway, that makes way more sense right?

Ava Duvernay brilliantly directed Selma and The 13th. Two films I recommend anyone check out. The problem with A Wrinkle in Time I saw was that it felt more like an after school special as opposed to the actual book. It seemed like an attempt for Disney to cash in on the demographic they thought they were gonna own. But in doing so robbed the story of it's individuality. As well as the movie appearing edited to heck and a lot of the footage in the trailers (showing the girl's intelligence when it came to science) not being in the film at all. Seems like Disney made a "cut the depth for time, just focus on the simple fact she's a girl and make that be why she's awesome." aspect, which I am doubting was the original vision. Though what was left of the self love message that remained in was very heartfelt. But you feel like a lot of depth of the movie was edited out, because Disney felt simplifying it down to "girl is awesome" was all they have to do nowadays. They are gonna learn a harsh lesson quickly that it's characters like Asoka that are going to resonate with audiences more than characters like Rey(Rian Johnson's version of Ray, not JJ Abrams version he was setting her up to be). Seems to me like Disney is starting to make similar mistakes to what DC was doing where they edit a film down, simplify the message and try to pass it off and make a bunch of money "just because" they're Disney. Disney continues to pay the price for their lack of vision, and Ava Duvernay imo is best suited for the films that AREN'T major Hollywood blockbusters with constant studio interference, and will probably return to that aspect of film making depending on how her experience with Disney has been on her film.
