I went back to Upton Park a year after the final game against Manchester United was played to see how the stadium looks and how the area and it's businesses has been been affected.
With thanks to West Ham Fan TV and Mr West Ham football and all the fans that helped throughout the filming process.

Back in the day Green street on a saturday afternoon was a snapshot of working class London in all its glory, the market, the pubs, the street hawkers, the banter up and down the road, the walk from Upton park tube to the ground was a carnival, the chicken run was worth ten points a season, football has been so sterilised now its unrecognisable.

Moving a football club from its local area to some sort of Space Age designed venue, on an out of town Industrial Estate totally devoid of "local character" is equal to digging up Stonehenge and reassembling it, right next to Heathrow Airport, to make it "easier???" for people to get to.

Organic Kevin spot on mate, my club Derby County play in a commercial estate surrounded by car shops, our old ground was nestled in the middle of terraced houses and a foundry on one side with foundry smoke blowing over the ground, that’s how we liked it.

@Martin England fans voice their concerns and more often than not, owners refuse to listen to them. My club, Nottingham Forest, actually listened and have made plans to redevelop part of our ground instead of knocking it down and moving to some miserable industrial estate.

Were I able to breathe life back into my dad, my grandparents, my aunties & uncles...sit them down & inform them that the Boleyn was no more then each & every one would weep for sure...uncontrollably. For the ground itself & the community at large, for sure...but more so at the grade of supporters that could have ever allowed it to happen.

It was possible to redevelop the East Stand aka the Chicken run to a double decker stand. That's what real fans wanted. However the fans were told they couldn't do it because it was to close to a bus garage and they couldn't build above the flats. Ironically the bus garage has gone and the new build flats on the ground have been built above the flats. Basically all lies by GSB and the council. Now businesses like Nathan's pie and mash, Kens cafe, the boleyn pub etc have shut, because of this dodgy deal to regenerate an area.

A football club belongs to it's community and the community is what gives a football club its identity. A club should never move away from its home. I’ve been saying this for a while now. This new shit soulless athletics bowl WILL NOT WORK. No one I know enjoys coming to watch football at this London stadium even when we are winning! I am predicting in the near future we should be able to buy the London stadium from E20 as they are going out of business as we speak. After we purchase the ground we should demolish it and rebuild a ground similar to upton park in its place. A proper ground with stands close to the pitch, maybe even an exact replica of upton park but with a larger capacity of 45K max. I am hoping all this can happen within the next 20 odd years so I can actually enjoy coming to my local club to watch my team. IMO this is the only solution for west ham if it wants to maintain its rich history and tradition of a proper football club. COYI ⚒⚒⚒

They promised the badge wouldn't change, they promised the seats would be no further from the pitch, they promised fixtures wouldn't be interfered with to accommodate athletics and they promised a stadium that no other could rival (the biggest lie of the lot). Now the stadium is devoid of atmosphere because a large percentage of attendees are day trippers to London from around Europe and want to spend the 90 minutes taking selfies and texting their friends (like Man Utd "fans"). A year after the move, the bus garage at the back of the East Stand (the only reason for not being able to extend Upton Park massively) was closed. It stinks.

Is it such an inconvenience to go to the old places you supposedly care so much about before making your way to the new stadium? It is only 3 miles away.

It's 2020 guys! We now have Upton Gardens, a bunch of thrown together flats for people to buy! All the flats that will produce Council Tax revenue! Yay! Meanwhile, West Ham are in a shite ground too big to be called a ground, we're nowhere near the pitch, we can't even be heard so the venue (and that's all it is) actually plays cheering sounds on the PA system to make it sound like people are there. No wonder we're doing worse than usual. We're not there egging them on. Because we're a few hundred yards away just in case someone wants to do the 400 meter run. Yay.

@@bencutts2807 The baseball ground was nestled between terraced housing, railway lines and Ley's Iron foundry. It perfectly represented Derby's strong history of industry, pride park perfectly represents that all our former glory has been replaced with car dealerships and office blocks. Industrial Derby is no more and neither is the baseball ground sadly.

It’s so sad to see, especially the local businesses and boozers. But we all know it’s all about fuckin pound notes at the end of the day,the clubs don’t give a shit about the fans etc,all there bothered about is money!another soulless bleedin stadium, void of atmosphere selling shit pies for £5 and even worse booze for even more!im mufc and it’s the same at it,even though we’ve not moved the atmosphere has gone, makes me sick!

Hard to explain the atmosphere and the Cockney wit of the old "Chicken Run." A few feet from the pitch, everyone standing shoulder to shoulder. The team made up of mostly local players. Football in general has gone steadily downhill as a working class pastime since then. The premier league teams have very little local identity now. Foreign owners, foreign managers, foreign players, exorbitant prices, soulless stadia. That's progress?

I stopped watching arsenal in 2002, as they announced they would leave highbury Never watched them since, and i know how you feel For me, arsenal was highbury, and i was proved right People running football have no idea Just glad that liverpool never left anfield, they showed there is at least one team that understood what its stadium meant for its team. So i know what you feel like you west ham fans, leaving upto park you will never be the same team again. It was such a tight ground. Highbury was also like this, and had a far smaller pitch then most big teams, and meant the crowd was virtually on the pitch You people at utpon park had similar thing, where upton park was in your community, and was who you people were from that area of london. I stopped watching arsenal, and never will watch them again, have not since 2002. At least highbury was immortalised in the film fever pitch, with what we did in 1989. Most teams do not have a film about there team, so they cannot have those memories. So i agree with you west ham fans who regret you left your stadium I stopped watching arsenal 4 years before they left highbury, and do not care about them today, as for me arsenal that i loved do not exist anymore. I just totally divorced from the team in 2002. You people whoi saw upton park will always remember the games you had there, and its gone forever. Same as highbury Just glad for liverpool fans anfield is still there, as a thing that represents the liverpool fans, and there team. What happened in anfield can never be brought somewhere else. Highbury is gone, and so is my love for arsenal. But if i want i can always watch the film fever pitch to remember the highbury we all knew. Most teams did not have a film made about what they did. Upton park was a wonderful place for you people, and its disgusting what your new stadium is like The football fan has been turned into consumers, and football will loose its soul.
