Before Manchester United moved to Old Trafford they were known as Newton Heath LYR FC and played in two different home stadiums.
I explored Manchester and the old homes of Man United (and Newton Heath); North Road & Bank Street.

watching them have a disaster of a season after signing the "GOAT" CR7 and then seeing them struggle to sign anyone this window (so far), including publicly chasing De Jong who DOESN'T WANT TO JOIN because Utd can't offer Champs league football for who knows how many seasons. Yep, this last season and this season coming should be pretty funny.

Great story, Man Utd to secure a future needs big time to rid itself of the Glazer ghouls before they bankrupt the club. On another note that I feel is only fair to mention, I do hope everyone associated with FC United of Manchester is at the beginning of a folklore success that will also make for a great story in time, what has been achieved so far by FC United is remarkable.

not a utd fan but did the tour in 97 just after the new north stand was built. even with only 1 huge side, old trafford blew me away. the walkout up the stairs to your seat beats even st james' in newcastle (which is also well worth it). also utd's trophy room is unfathomable. best tour I've done and it's still fresh in my mind 25yrs later. top video

I know you're based in Scotland but Arsenal's history and development would make for an interesting video. When I first started to become interested in football Manchester United were in decline and were actually relegated to the old second division, but they bounced straight back and eventually regained their mojo.

At present The Old Trafford Stadium is still incomplete & needs is an upgrade of the SBC stand & East & West quadrant to be completed first before you can sort out the roof. This Stadium has a lot of potential & can be one of the best stadium in Europe if not the world with the original design cos it has character & authentic with the potential capacity of at least 90K, all it needs is an refurbished & some TLC. Take Note: The Stadium Must Not Exceed the rail way track! Man Utd 's Old Trafford 'The Super Bowl of Stadiums known as 'The Theatre of Dreams' is unique & a Colossal of a stadium. I grew up in Clayton and during the mid 90s to early 2000s me, my brother and our mates would walk to the velodrome (cycling centre) to play football during the summer holidays. Every year they'd have a football camp and all the local kids would go and play right next to to the spot where United's ground used to be. The football would either be set up in the car park, inside the velodrome or in Phillips park. Amazing memories, I hope that summer footie camp is still going strong 👍🏻

Excellent video. Glad you mentioned you are not a Man Utd fan, but interested in Football history and old stadia. I am a Liverpool fan, and old enough (68) to have visited the old grounds now long gone. I loved old those old grounds, such as Burnden Park (Bolton) , Roker Park (Sunderland), White Hart Lane (Spurs), Goodison Park soon to be added to the list. One old ground I never liked was Wembley. One of my students lived right next to Roker Park. His Mam would get tickets for the Sunderland v Liverpool games and the family always made me welcome, proper Wearsiders. Roker Park was a grand old ground. I have always liked Sunderland. Calvin Palmer , Sunderland left back in 1972, once put me and my dog up for the night, as we were hitchhiking down from Scotland. Sadly Calvin had left Sunderland by the following season when they beat Leeds Utd in the FA Cup Final. He was a good bloke, but tended to fall out with his managers. Probably cos he was smarter than them. He died in 2014, very sad.

well said, sir. as a united supporter i hate liverpool but i respect them. i have no respect for city. im not opposed to clubs making a name of course. not going to lie a little bit of me was rooting for leicester when they made their run. i want to see clubs earn it, not just buy it. clubs like united, liverpool, arsenal, ya they spend money. but they spent over a century building their club and seeing success most of the time. clubs like city really didnt do much but were just bought by super wealthy people.

I corrected a KZbinr recently who put United's formation date at 1902, unaware that they'd changed their name. If the club was given a winding up order then unless the company went into liquidation, like Rangers did, and the saviours stepped in at the last minute to save the club then it's the same club. It upsets a lot of Rangers fans when I tell them that the new Rangers is a phoenix club and doesn't actually have any legal ties to the old one. So, in all honesty, the trophies that it claims to have won were won by the old club, which is now defunct. Anyway, my one and only trip to Old Trafford was in 1978 when they were celebrating their Centenary. It was a friendly against Real Madrid. I bought a United centenary scarf. Had it for years but don't know what happened to it since. That was until earlier this year when I took my granddaughter to watch the women's game against Everton. She likes to think of herself as a female Ronaldo.

The Owners were the ones who stop the Original project by using the excuse of the rail track complications. As stated previously, the design has already been laid out for completion of the stadium by original designers, to finish before the train track but the owners compromised by installed the 3rd tier cos the fans were complaining about the capacity at that time. Alls well we like to think that once the owners depart or bring in SJR and his team we can address the layout for the necessary expansion of the South stand, East & West quadrant issue ASAP because Wembley or Man City's Etihad is to far to deal with the fan base, we're sure that can be achieved with minimal fuss, going by our walk around the stadium experience by observation. Take Note: The expansion should not exceed the rail track. We feel in 18 month to 2 years copying Real Madrid project with the right people it can be achieved in line with progress on the pitch! Worth a view, please share!

The original plague at Northampton Road was on the corner of 60s comprehensive school building, same shape has the bank st plaque I remember you could see it from the road, it was demolished in the 90s so probably was kept as a souvenir by someone, the original names of teams usually came from works teams like Newton heath, arsenal and west ham originate from factories, then you had church teams that came from teams like Everton , man city and Bolton, and teams created from cricket clubs, most teams had name changes so I wouldn't say these were a second formation date , there is a blue plaque for Man city's ground on Bennett st , when they were Ardwick FC but yet to spot it , Manchester Central FC was actually a third MCR team that successfully applied to join the league for the newly formed third division north but was blocked by city and United , central had Billy Meridith as a coach who had both city and United history connections , some say it was to protect United who were financially struggling at the time, but central was based in Bellevue much closer to the new Maine road stadium than old Trafford

There used to be a school on Northampton Rd, with a proper circular plaque on it. I don't know if the plaque was re-sited when the school was knocked down as part of the land clearance work to build the shiny offices there now. I live about 3 miles away from there. Northampton Rd is not far from FC United's new ground, Broadhurst Park, which incorporates a storey of large railway sleepers as a nod to the roots of Manchester football.

Man Utd's Old Trafford stadium that a bit of TLC won't cure. All it needs is the Upgrade of the Sir Bobby Charlton's Stand with a 2nd tier to complete the original design & the removal of the 3rd tier of the Sir Alex Ferguson's Stand & replaced by TV Screens for all 4 corners. We also want a levelled retractable new Roof + modern refurbishment of the rest of the stadium to warrant a 90K capacity in comfort. SBCS 25K + SAFS 25K + SES 20K + ES 20K = 90K. Take Note: The expansion should not exceed the rail track. It wasn't the centenary it's was just 100 years of the name change, just like it was the ground centenary in 2010, most of the English Clubs have had name change or dropped a part of the name like Southampton st marys, it would only be a new club with a new formation year ,if the team went out of business completely and Start up again or if 2 teams amalgamated like Inverness Carley thistle, some would question is Glasgow rangers the same team after going into administration and dropping down the divisions but they still have the same badge ground and 1872 formation and honours record

Be careful what you wish for, a new ground to replace and improve the capacity would be best part of a billion add that to what the glazers have shackled us with, most of our stadium is less than 35 year old, probably the oldest section is k stand which was built in 72 , a lot clubs ran their stadium in to the ground, I remember speaking to a Bolton fan in the late 80s and said the ground needs new stands, he said they need to get it right on the green stuff before they invest in new concrete and plastic seats , that's the advice we need to be following at the moment

If you would have walked up the street where you asked the guy on bank street you would have come to North road and the plaque is still there. You were right that they started in Newton heath but North road is closer to bank street.

That's such an odd video. I went to Moston Brook High School for about a year in the late 80s and that was on Northampton Road. I remember PE teachers going bananas telling us that we were so lucky to be doing PE lessons on Uniteds old pitch! Not sure how true that is but they used to belt on about it at the school all the time (the school tie was the same as the official United tie...red with a white diagonal stripe bordered with black.) Seeing the video is really mad as not only is there no sign of Newton Heaths old ground but every bit of what was there in the 80s has gone as well!

I can’t believe you didn’t mention that Archibald Leitch designed Old Trafford, under the Stretford End there’s information about the stadium
