Thank you Eric! originally we were going to make an actual made for theaters doc, but then in the 10 years I took to put it all together, the whole theater movie bit fell apart and the competition to even get it seen or distributed was ridiculous. So we cut back a bit and tried to make something simpler for everybody. So glad you enjoyed it!

I think it goes without saying, but just for the record "God Bless" everyone who does his work. I have my own personal story with an old girl crow I affectionately named Fred, lol because I thought she was a male, and she blocked at me one day while I worked under a car. She sound just like a chicken, and I came out from under the car expecting to see a chicken perched in the tree, but it was Fred, and I was so amused by her and we became very good friends, and I fed her daily, she would follow me 1/2 a mile down to a friend's house. Then she stopped coming over, I thought the worst had happen, then one day she came back with two youngsters with her, that's the day I knew Fred was a female, life is still good, with her sharing me with others of her kind, they really give me a lot of love & joy.

Wow! Just WOW! I have been interacting with my own backyard corvids - the blue jays! I learned SO much this summer from them and about them. Now I need to befriend the crows down at the walmart parking lot! And then ravens in the closest woods I can find - or the beach! Thanks for a great video! You can always tell an baby or a juvenile from an adult by the color of the inside of their beaks. Red is the color of inexperience (at least with grows I think...).

Raven Party!!! Just heard ravens, went to check and 7 ravens arrived in the back pasture below the oak trees. I believe it is the ravens from the South and their fledglings. So excited. They all played on the ground for quite awhile. Another just flew in and landed above me when I clucked to her .. so we are back in business!!

Fantastic, I sat and watched the whole bit. I'm in Kansas and have been hoping to draw some crows into interactions on our property for two years. My health is crappy but my gardening girlfriend has been feeding all the birds that come around and we make sure there is water enough to go around. When the temp hits over 100 for a week or so the birds seem to like that we put fresh water out for them. In my life I have had a good deal of success having wild animals accept me as a neighbor. In Flushing Michigan living along side the Flint River we have a lot of wildlife. Deer, turkeys, racoons, beavers, woodchucks had all accepted my woodsy existence. It just feels so special when wild things treat you like a neighbor. Great work on your video production. I will try again next spring, good Lord willing to grant me the gift of 'present' living in the now time. We have drawn some crows in that regularly stop by but haven't had many good interaction as you have. Patients is a virtue and when it comes to nature, patients has its natural rewards. God bless and keep up the great work.

I’ll pay more attention the next time I’m at the beach although we usually walk around Heisler Park in Laguna, but we do love to drive that section of coastline where it was once all natural. I was curious about ravens, watched a few documentaries about their intelligence and saw yours about Crystal Cove-so close to home! I plan on following your videos now that I know they exist. We have plenty of Crows here in rural northeast PA but I only spied my first Raven here last year. We've had an uptick in every kind of native wildlife & invasive species in the last twenty ~ thirty years. But Crows were always with us. As I get older my awe for the behaviors of all these species grows. Some more than others.

This is brilliant! Absolutely love it! It reminds me of the unique Raven related experiences i have had in my own life. Have always been fascinated by these beautiful and intelligent birds! I have read books on ravens and seen limited documentaries. Finding anything on these birds seems like a “cached” treasure in and of its self! And Rick Bouford’s video is a jewel! Found myself nodding along to the witnessing of various Raven behaviors and antics, especially the “pull the tail” tease. But the videography in this is gorgeous. Especially with the aerial acrobatics against the ocean and cliffs of crystal cove. And then to have so many close ups of these Ravens is delightful! So are the interactions between Rick and the birds he claims as his neighbors. I certainly enjoy the science and naturalist approach (my Mom was an astronomer and earth scientist) But what I love Best is how Rick leaves room for the “magic.” Love that! It is beautiful! Some years ago, I went searching for Raven calls to end a ballad song i had written on my music album. Found some nice ones thanks to Cornell. But after seeing Ricks video and how the birds talk to him. If only I had known! Laugh. I also Love how this shows the lighter side of ravens, away from the mystic gloom of the Gaelic isles. Ricks video is much more in keeping with the oral stories and traditions passed down by Native cultures in the Pacific NW and Alaska, where Raven remains a multifaceted character!! My only two questions to Rick would be if he has ever noticed an adult Raven kid come back to help parents with the next brood? I’d read somewhere that could occasionally happen. And two, if he had ever witnessed two ravens (mated pair) “holding feet?” (Not in the air) but while preening and being together.Thought it might be one of those unusual Raven traits. Thrilling toHave learned so much new in this video including that unique Raven flight maneuver never knew that! Watching this was a beautiful experience! Thank you so much to Rick Bouford and team! Not to mention the music! Vivaldi? It was perfect. And Rick left the “wonder” in this, something both of my parents as educators would highly appreciate in a world where science can become rote and dry. I was hooked on ravens the moment a big one at Grand Canyon walked in front of our campers open door and tossed a pebble in front of me which hit its beak oops! 😅 love them!

Hello Mason Trent, Thank you so for your kind words. To answer your questions, I have never seen one of the young ravens return to help. And I've watched. Any and all get kicked out pretty quick. However I do believe I'm seeing another crow helping out up by my house. So I haven't seen the ravens allow help from past young but I'm pretty sure I've seen crows allow it. And I'll check some of my older stuff (I have over 1,000 hours) but I don't believe I've seen the birds "holding feet." Now, went to your site and loved you wooden instruments videos (guitar and flute). Played guitar myself but not the flute. The Native American flute is a favorite sound, especially at sunset at the Grand Canyon when the ravens are doing their last air games before going off to roost. Let me know when you post more of your flute videos. Thanks!

Have a raven family at our house who’s been here for as long as I can remember. They have one or two chicks every year as far as I can tell. They have one this year. They’re very fond of sitting outside my window at 5am and yelling,”I’m NOT A CROW!!” until I either get up or throw something at them 😆 Ive never found their nest. Prolly somewhere in the woods across the street. They really like our yard. Saw one land in the middle of it and start eating something. When I checked it out after he left I found an anthill in the middle of a half acre yard covered in grass. I have no idea how it was visible to the raven from the sky!

Yes, even the wild ones can be very interactive, playful and great teasers! Keep watch of that section of ants sometimes they will do what some call anting, where they sit and let the ants crawl all over them and eat the mites and parasites the ravens can't get! Thanks for sharing!

Love your area Jeri! New Mexico has ravens like Southern California has crows. EVERYWHERE! One year we rented a casita just outside Nambe and the relationships between the wild ravens and the farm animals where we stayed was so much fun to watch! Of course all the outlying areas, and the sunrises and sunsets were that much more spectacular cause there were ravens everywhere! And just hearing the far more subtle sound of many ravens, compared the obnoxious constant cawing of crows was absolutely heavenly! We'll be back one day!

I still go and keep track of the ravens, but the class is shut down till who knows when. Being a California State Park they tend to be more on the cautious side. As far as the egg poisoning bit, I haven't seen it or known of actual usage on ravens, I was only asked to document what a raven does with an egg so people wanting to use poison can see that ravens don't eat it it all so other things might be poisoned also.

@Jettgirl77
@Jettgirl77 3 жыл бұрын
The runt is the last egg laid. The eggs are not all laid on the same day. Birds lay eggs one day at a time. For instance, in the reproduction of any reproducing species, the runt is usually the last egg laid, or fertilized. It is usually the last one hatched, and the last one delivered too. Because it needs time to go through the process of development in the placenta whether it's inside an eggshell, or inside a dog, human. After delivery runts catch up to their counterparts. The parents may favour them, giving them less or more nutrients if there is a breeder involved runts can become the best of the best. Sometimes runts do not make too. They may have missing inside organs you do not see and will only show up on necropsy, ultrasounds. Things that will keep them from developing into full adults. It's nature.

I'm looking for information on rooks. Have a white barred jackdaw at the moment, and this year alone hit double figures for downed birds that's been returned to the wild. 8 jackdaws of which 5 got in the air, one died the morning after a hurricane and one term picked a virus up, she was an older bird and well, not a lot I could do for viral issues. 1 very old pigeon given a place to spend his last night away from cats. And as of the other night, a rook. On first inspection I couldn't see and issues, wing and leg resistance was good so no major breaks I can find. I've bathed him to clean him up and he really is a gentle giant.... that worries me a little. He walks, he flaps, he hops.... but that's about it. The main thing I noticed was he seemed very, disoriented and off balance. It started as a dog grabbing it on the path, seemingly no injuries incured, but suspect hit by a car. On the 2nd day he stayed on the floor and on the 3rd day (yesterday) he finally perched up on a branch for the night. Kikoshi, the jackdaw is curious..... me to.... never had a large bird other than 2 peregrine falcon I use to hunt with.. This is different to jackdaw care, and struggling to find good information sources. Can you help and leave a link or few? Many thanks, New viewer, and subbed from the UK. Fully enjoyed the video

@@theravendiaries it's gets better.. One of my friends rang me to tell me there was a black bird running round. My first thoughts was, black bird... So late in the year. So, Me and my daughter went and looked, then continued to the shop. We checked again on the way back.... Still nothing. I rang my friend to check and asked for more details of where.... Went in the rain and checked again.. No, not a black bird.. Another rook... This one is younger, but has the adult beak. A year old give or take, and smaller than the first.. (Still not steady) so he (the first) now has a friend. Will know in the morning after a clean up. (both within... 100meters or so so thinking shot? Going to pull metal detector out and check in the morning, just gone midnight) On a plus note, the local crows (pair) appears to now be one now?? She spotted me at my brothers and proceeded to... Mutter? Not the normal behaviour I get, and yes, she has seen me out with the jackdaw (kikoshi) walking and rooftop flying. Been an odd week to say the least.. Now my thoughts, the rook in the tree knows me, prob heard each other this morning.... I'm guessing she was being noticeable. As for the younger. Be nice to get ether up again but if not, maybe I can arrange for meet and greats for the pair... Ah, full of thoughts, just so odd, over all the years then 2 in 3 days so close to each other........ Odd (kikoshi, as much as he can fly, its short distances only.... Think he will remain garden homed at least til next spring, give him another malt, (feather change on the digits never changed or developed) , see if that helps but..... Pet I'm betting.. A little update,will try and download a video editor make a short video over the next few weeks and months of kikoshi. Been a while since i went out learning to hunt with a pair of falcons. Looks great for stoops. 1 jackdaw, long term....two rooks.. The female seems to be ok...the male, right leg reminds me of a video i saw with a crow/raven with a broken leg(knee?).. can't escape as fast from predictors.. Suspect he's in for a few weeks at least. The jackdaw kikoshi had a fight with two crows last weekend on the roof tops...was ambushed but took flight then dropped to the floor when i called. Should of seen the look i got off the crows when i went to him and he steeped up on my hand...they watched, kibosh then flew to the path where he started walking home..back on the hand you go lol. Spent the next two days sulking in his cage, followed by two days moaning at the rooks in the large cage.. he's back to his old self and learning from the rooks about seeds and snail's etc. Love the view, love your work....how many hours of video have you shot over the years? This is awesome! I have a nice murder of crows who I have been feeding and talking to for about 4 years now. I am amazed at how people say they don't like them or they're ugly! It's mindblowing! I think they're so much fun to see every day! Just from learning naturally, I knew some things about the raven because of the common traits as the crow. For example, the babies with their bare legs and how the pink on their beaks are only on the young ones and will eventually turn black. The first one I got to know I named Shae. (Crow Shae, that is!) Hahahaha! Here in Florida, a lot of birds get shocked by the power lines. I think that's what happened to her, but she lived through it fine, save some feathers on her head and one of her feet was melted into a blob. She tends to hop a lot in the grass, but she gets around just fine and is definitely one of the leaders of the group of about 50 birds here year 'round! Obviously, I can talk about these precious animals as you can talk about yours! Lol! Take care and best wishes to you, your wife and your feathered brood!

It's nice to see that others have been successful in making "friends" with crows. My "murder" or crow neighbors are just too large of group to get to "know" just one or even a small family. They will be more than happy to just take food off my roof but they will not take the time to sit and befriend me the way I've been able to do with the ravens. Unfortunately, people think I'm not "fond" of crows (probably because I say it in the movie but that was just old movie story telling where you have to have a villain ... ) but they are just as fascinating to watch and enjoy as the ravens. The big difference is I just can't seem to get any that to want to spend time with me ... Thanks for sharing!

@@theravendiaries Thanks for replying! Mostly, they include me in their morning calls to see where everyone is. Now they're laughing when I do and they just started "blowing me kisses." Well, kind of! One in particular will exchange "MUUAAH!" with me and its absolutely precious! They will keep saying it until I finish. Anyway, people think I'm crazy but I love being the house with all of the Crows! Anyway! Hahahaha! Take care and have fun with those awesome Ravens!

As soon as you said you found an orphan baby Raven, I knew you went down the same path I did when you found a baby bird and that's why I am here. Because Raven's have imprinted on me here in Toronto, Ontario, while they were engaging with other birds that know me well. I will come back to watch this. It's amazing how birds that imprint on us, will bring friends to us to show how we are good with them and we can help them get what they need. Once you learn calls they will use their calls to even call humans out of their homes. My Blue Jays, Robins, Hawks, Pigeons, they all do it where I live. I provide food even though we are not supposed to. I provide a birdbath, and clean fresh water every day, and clean it. Keeping clean water, helps birds stay clean from any parasites and viruses. This is why they come to humans with other pets. The wild animals know that those humans are animal friendly and have some kind of animal knowledge to keep them also clean, healthy. I hope my comment helps anyone that is into birdwatching and finds something that needs help. Your animal controls will always put down small animals and birds, your wildlife centres are all privately funded and take forever to get to you. They have a habit of putting small birds to sleep as well. There is many resources with bird breeders to help wild birds in the wild. Always quarantine sick animals from healthy ones, that's a given so that you are not spreading anything. I hope my tips help anyone that is out there and comes across something they want to help. Good Luck to all of you animal helpers, and watchers. Thanks for being a fellow animal appreciation person. There are many out there that hit our birds with broomsticks, mophandles from their balconies, I have witnessed this. So, if you see a bird with a low hanging wing, or it's wing or shoulder limping, please get it to help. Thanks.

Wonderful movie! Thank you for sharing! I am a "raven lover". We had them nesting in a fir in our garden and it was so amazing seeing them growing and learning. I was surprised a morning with lots of noise and it was that they were cheering the first fly! The following year didn't have the nest close to my house but they were visiting.

Just wanted to share, the raven voices to the south 1/4 mi. have turned into me now having, at last count.. 11 ravens. Too many to be a bond pair & family so I don't know what this is. They feed in my pasture morning and late afternoon..so many. Trying to get video, put up a game cam to morning as they are very shy. One mated pair shows now every morning, feeds and takes food to the north, or sometimes caches it in the grass so waiting to see if there is fledglings there. If I'm working outside, she calls to me until I get her a spare chicken egg, then takes it somewhere...

It’s my limited understanding that ravens can often form large family groups. So, the 11 ravens you have could be a family group. They’re way more than most people give them credit.

@@Skylaire you could have a very large family group, or two or three families. I believe family groups can consist of up to 40+ individual ravens.

WOW!!! That was absolutely wonderful!!! 🧡 I've been in love with all the Corvids since I was a little girl because a large black bird followed me and my family along the cliff tops above Dunkirk; when I stood still to watch it, it came and sat on my shoulder for many minutes. Dad said it was a jackdaw. Where I live now there are fields and woods in front of my windows and there's a very large flock of jackdaws who've been in the bell tower of our church ever since I moved here (Lancashire. UK) over 40 years ago, plus crows, rooks, buzzards, sparrow hawks, and currently 6 pairs of magpies in the woods. This year for the first time, we've had sightings of much larger black birds that we think/hope are ravens, but can't be sure until I get some new binoculars. Obviously we also have the usual country and garden birds as well as owls, bats, rabbits, squirrels, foxes, and a small family of Roe deer who stroll through the misty fields over there...life is never dull gazing out of my lounge window! BTW. I'm a violinist so adore your choice of music! I'll be heading off to watch the rest of 'theravendiaries' next! Thank you for these wonderful videos. SUBSCRIBED! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

I myself had a strange encounter with a raven in the late 1980 s . So I became very interested ever since then . Im pretty good at talking to them , and imitating some of the sounds . Once one of them came very close to me and made some sounds that were the extreme bass notes , like clunk-honk -click . It was such a deep sound that I felt it throughout my whole body . It was a very special and unique experience

I was "glued" to the screen for all length of the movie. Please keep doing this - it is obviously your passion - and bring in new aspects of their life, behavior and personality. Help change the pejorative the misconception of "Bird Brain/Intelligence/Mind". Thank you, teacher...

The raven recognizing you car is astounding and proof that these animals are just as intelligent as we humans are! I was especially intrigued when she brought the raven out. She cocked her head to the side to get a better look at me and she was completely interested in me and sizing me up the entire time. We had a huge crowd this weekend and I gave Cronk some treats and told them where he was going to go to cache but that he won't do it as I watch and they thought it was hilarious that he kept watching for me to peak around the corner and see where he was hiding it. He knows how to make people laugh for sure!
