That was a beautiful film I enjoyed it. They are such beautiful birds. The corvids are so misunderstood, yet show such high intelligence.

What a wonderful video, you should get an award for this, and it should be on PBS. I'm still studying my wild ravens in foothills of No. Calif. (x 4 yrs. now) and this helps me understand mine so much better. A mated couple live and feed in my back pasture and last yr. a fledgling showed up 2 wks. after they started bringing their other 2 fledglings to feed. I thought it was an abandoned one joining in but now believe it must have been a "runt" . It was so unusual as it just stayed here every evening when others flew off and roosted in a tree every night in backyard until Fall, when I believe, probably the couple ran it off. It flew down and fed with the chickens, walked around socializing with the range flock most of the day the entire summer. It would fly up to my face, hover then into reverse every morning to greet me. I try to study the socializations, vocalizing, hiding their food from each other, territories around. They are truly amazing and thank you for explaining so much on their behaviors as it helps me better understand them. Waiting for this years fledglings to show, any time now. Both mom & dad are feeding together now on top of barn, so soon.

My award, or reward is hearing just what you told me! Both writing and book and making a movie is really all about the sharing of a story you are passionate about and seeing others get passionate about it also. So glad some of my experiences might mirror some of your own. Got to love that runt! My first fledglings down at the beach flew for the first time I know of today! And it looks like 2018 is going to be a very strange year. The whole dynamics of the entire beach seems to have changed. I will be posting videos as soon as I figure out what the heck is going on. Just know you are welcome to come and share your experiences anytime you want to! I always love to hear what others are experiencing. Thanks!!!!

I've been fascinated by ravens for 20 years. I follow them around town. On a busy summer afternoon in downtown Boulder, a big ol' raven found a pancake squashed into the asphalt of a crosswalk. The light kept changing green, yellow, and red, over and over, but the raven refused to leave the pancake and the lead car refused to run him over, so the line of cars grew longer as the raven worked at prying chunks of pancake out of the road. The car honked; the raven totally ignored it. Pedestrians were stopping to laugh, people in cars were laughing... but that raven wouldn't give up until he'd gotten all of that pancake. They have minds like steel traps and determination to match. I saw a raven on top of a light pole as I was walking down the street. He was across the street and half a block ahead. On my side of the road there were trees leafed out beside the sidewalk, and I thought I'd stop behind a tree and watch the raven through the crown foliage for a while. He paid no attention to me until I stopped behind a tree. Within 5 seconds he was crouched, staring at me. Within 10 seconds he was flying away. They know what to expect from human behavior and they don't like it when they think you're watching them from a hiding spot. Another time I was walking down the sidewalk and it must have been winter because the trees had no leaves. About 20 feet up a tree I saw two ravens. A female was doing her best to ignore a male who was doing his absolute best to win her heart. She kept moving further out on the branch, obviously trying to avoid him while doing her best to pretend that he didn't exist, and he followed along right next to her, pulling all sorts of crazy antics, totally shameless and embarrassing... there was nothing he wouldn't do. She just stared straight ahead. It was like watching Groucho Marx trying to pick up Leona Helmsley! Then there was Bob the Burbling Beak Clacker. For a while, from my office I was walking over to a sandwich shop every day for lunch. On the way, the sidewalk passed beneath a bare tree branch about 7 feet above my head. Often, the same raven was there. I don't know why, and I don't know why he didn't fly away as I approached, but he was always crouched, and he would clack his beak and burble. I would talk to him as I passed but he clacked and burbled whether I talked or not. I got the feeling that his clacking and burbling was not connected to me. Bob the Burbling Beak Clacker. My father was also fascinated with ravens and he wanted to raise a young one. He lived outside of Jackson, WY, and one day he found a raven nest on a telephone pole. He ran into a lineman and tried to talk him into climbing the pole and stealing one of the young out of the nest (my father was a famous environmental philosopher and conservationist!) but the man refused. Dad decided to go out and hang around the base of the nest until one of the young jumped out, and then dad planned to grab it, steal it away and raise it as his own. The parent birds had a feeling that dad was up to no good and they tried to distract him with trick flying. They would fly past him flying upside down. They would fly past him flapping one wing at a time. Well, dad was determined too, and after he saw that the chicks had hatched and feathered out he hung out there every day, most of the day. Finally it happened. One of the young birds came hurtling down, crash-landed, and dad (in his 70s at the time) was on him like a flash! He got the bird home, but dad wasn't really prepared... by the time he got back to the house, that little bird, which wasn't really all that little, and not exactly weak, had pretty much shredded his hands. Even at that age they have beaks like a cross between an ice pick and a pair of pliers. What flesh it hadn't shredded on the trip back to the house it continued to work on at every opportunity. The next morning dad took it back to the base of the pole and released it.

We have a Raven couple who have adopted us. We help them through the harsh winters. They repay us by bringing their chicks to hang out with us each late Spring. It is a very noisy time but we enjoy the racket and the antics. It’s been 10 years now. They visit us every day. Sometimes I think about moving to the city but can’t trust our Ravens to anyone else. We love them. They love us.

Dear Mr. Rick, Thank you incredibly much posting this lovely Raven documentary and also for the very nice (btw. Baroque) Music - a beautiful performance of the "4 Seasons" composed by Mr. Antonio Vivaldi. ❤😊😊❤ Yes, "we" Corvidae (crow-like birds) are amazingly smart alright, especially "us" Raven. Did you know Raven developed a real language ? I'm not kidding you, it's really true, "we" can even tell other Raven about many things they've never seen before, e.g. (friendly either hostile) people (and what they look/sound like) - and they will instantly recognize these humans when these (well informed) Raven see or hear them. Yes, we got what humans call culture; we teach our young very well - like all intelligent animals do. Pity humans all too often fail to teach their young to respect, protect & love (and live in Harmony with) Mother Nature.. Besides the fact "we" Raven got great memory and can even plan ahead.. When complicated situations arises, we take a minute or so to contemplate all options - and usually do the optimal, the right thing. And we got sense of humor too, be it quite naughty and sometimes kinda weird.. Btw. I'm a Raven in a human exterior - no surprise I love my fellow Raven. If you treat "us" kindly (and serve "us" nice treats - good food is very important, right ?) we're gonna be your loyal friend. Did you know Raven marry for life and will be loyal to their partner till the day (one of them) dies ? That's very common big bird behavior e.g. Eagles, Albatros' and many others. True love is not exclusively human - many animals really do love their family/group members long as they live. And they are very sad when one of them dies, that's also true. Regrettably, humans - often arrogant and ignorant - think they and they alone posses intelligence. Makes me laugh ! I think "we" Raven are way smarter than humans, because "we" live in Harmony with and do no harm onto Mother Nature - unlike them "intelligent" (yeah, right..) humans.. Go see: www.mnn.com/earth-matters/animals/blogs/3-ways-ravens-are-among-the-smartest-animals-on-the-planet gizmodo.com/more-evidence-that-ravens-are-ridiculously-intelligent-1796882085 www.nationalgeographic.com/news/2017/07/ravens-problem-solving-smart-birds/ for more info.

So glad you enjoyed it, as a raven that means more to us than can be expressed! Thank you also for your stories and for the links. And although "us' ravens and raven lovers already knew this stuff and didn't need "scientists" to tell "us" these things, it's great that they are finally realizing it and more important sharing it with a somewhat ignorant public! All we are asking for is, respect for the raven!

haha, it took me by surprise when Vivaldi's "Spring" played, my mum performed it for her grade 4 violin test. I love birds, where I am we have crows and magpies but not ravens, I enjoy them a lot and hand with most of the local birds. Maggie joins me it 8:30 every morning and random times of the day, Little Butcher Bird comes at mid day for a treat and I see Chicky the rosella in the morning and afternoon. I also spend alot of time with a dove called Dovi (after Dovizioso). it is lovely to enjoy the nature and share it with others

@@Jepysauce Thank you for for kind remarks. Years ago my goal was to create something "big screen worthy" and had dreams of a doc to place in Film Fests and such. As I was getting closer to the finale (about 3 years ago), I started researching what the industry looked like. Ha, Cannes Film Fest had over 4,000 films looking to get distribution. That's just one fest out of the many hundreds there are out there. So, since I'm basically retired, I decided I have more fun in the creating and playing than promoting. So, to be honest I'm pretty happy with my little KZbin audience, and I just enjoy bringing em new stuff without the worry of theater quality expenses. Short of it I'm just here to have fun, share some things I've learned along the way (some a little controversial buts that's half the fun also), and enjoy the personal engagement with who ever wants to watch and participate. This particular movie was over 2 hours long ... yes my wife even fell asleep, so I broke it down into numerous parts and even have a second version that goes more into the details of my relationship with the birds at Crystal Cove. So thanks, again I appreciate the input!

Consider the Ravens....to cache is definitely storing!
@theravendiaries Жыл бұрын
Yes, nice call, however the reading is more along these lines. "Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!" Basically it's saying ravens don't purposely plant and harvest crops then store the entire harvest in barns and warehouses for later use. So even though they cache some of their food, they are still basically taken care of day by day. (Now Huey actually "planted" or cached nasturtium seeds but didn't wait for the harvest!) Jesus is making a simple declaration that's more like, if God takes care of the birds, how much more will He take care of us. You, however, are the first to make that call! : )
