A YouTube first: a demonstration of a "sidewalk" elevator.

To the best of my knowledge, I'm the first person to ever film a sidewalk elevator in action. This sidewalk elevator is a Gillespie with a 1,000 pound capacity. Enjoy!

At my old job at one time there had been a sidewalk elevator it was taken out of service 50 or more years ago. From what remains behind it was a hydro either city water pressure or a tank and power unit. Also there was an Otis hydroelectric fright elevator with a water tank mixed with hydro fluid, resembled an oversize pedestal sump pump. 5HP induction motor 3 phase 208 volt.

The machine room for the fright elevator is quite interesting, hydro tank is made of steel painted black 2" steel pipe and fittings for the pump head, and solenoid valve, it is manually operated, with a magnetic motor starter, and control relay. A primary 3 phase disconnect fused panel in the electrical room, and a secondary disconnect in the machine room. One problem if the water gets too low in the tank the pump looses it's prime until it's filled back up with water and hydro fluid.

There were a lot of sidewalk fright elevators in the City Of Berkeley where this previous elevator had been. One of the places was a grocery store which did home deliveries, loaded the orders in the basement, brought them up to the vans on the street via the sidewalk elevator. The building where the hydraulic freight elevator was had been torn down.

One of the 1980s MacGyver episodes showed Jack Dalton using a sidewalk elevator to access his underground apartment. I think it was 1st or 2nd season, and if I remember right, he drove his motorcycle onto it. Until I saw this video I had not seen once since, and never seen one in real life.
