I am so glad there is someone like you who is there to explain the intricate steps of how to repair MacBooks. I am 91 years old and my first computer was an Amiga and when they disappeared I would buy old Macs from the university in 1990 and try to make one out of two or three. Now I am working on 2006 to 2009 MackBooks and need the help you are graciously providing on KZbin. I had been The Sewing Machine Doctor for 40 years so I am used to small equipment. Computers are a challenge and I strip them down and clean them and back together the same day. A little shaky but no Dementia. I know where the parts and screws go and the wires in the proper places. Thank you again for all the information you are sharing with people like me.

I had a non charging Mac. I turned it over to Apple. They said there was no problem and gave it back. No charge. I knew the guy. Solution was to leave the MacBook shut down for 72hrs to empty the battery and probably memory too.

I had a similar problem with a Windows laptop. It wouldn't turn on and the charging light was constantly lit even without the charger plugged in. In the end it was fixed by simply removing the battery and waiting 10 secs till the power totally drained. I think it was caused by a bad charger because the charger Box made strange noises when plugged into the wall, so maybe it was tripping out the charging circuit in the laptop. Thank God for removable batteries

Louis, you and I have a lot in common, although I am 78 and have made a lifetime career out of repairing radio and television station hardware, up to 110,000 watt UHF TV transmitters. And all of the lower level RF, baseband video, and audio stuff. And even the cameras, audio mixing consoles, switching, and editing equipment. You and I think alike. I'm proud of you for carrying on a great tradition. And thanks for making narrated videos of your work. 73. Bob WA6WHT
@LinearBob3 жыл бұрын
I should have added that I did (and still do, when I can) troubleshooting and repair to the component level. But in my industry, the station owners don't care much about that any more. They want cheap people, and don't mind throwing lots of money at new boards to fix problems because they think that approach is cheaper in the long run. The thought virus you have exposed from Apple, of using TI (and other company's) chips that you cannot get is increasingly common. In some cases, they (the product manufacturers) don't want anyone figuring out how their hardware really works because if you knew that, you would scream about how over-priced that hardware is. Some of the "Broadcast Grade" equipment profit margins are literally stunning, but brand names and reputation for "quality" are often used to justify those markups. If the end users knew the real prices, they wouldn't pay those inflated prices ever again. Even so, the ownership will still go for the board swappers, over the component level troubleshooters who can repair stuff, every time. It's the rare owner who appreciates his or her resident techies when everything is always running well. And they rarely notice that things have been running too well for too long. That turns out to be the handiwork of a good broadcast engineer. Turn on your radio or TV and the station you want is always there on the air. That's not an accident or good luck. :-)

I did 2M work for a long time, when i turned around 28 I noticed that I wasnt able to do precise work without small shakes so I started using helping hands a lot. By the time I was 32 I couldnt do 2M at all anymore as anytime I tried to do anything I would start shaking so bad, I just assumed it was an age thing and stopped doing 2M all together. Last year I got to the point I couldnt eat rice, so finally my wife made me go to the doctor. I was diagnosed with essential tremors, which are common I guess, i take a pill twice a day now and I do not shake at all anymore. I recommend looking into it, i think my life would have been much better if i wasnt a stubborn ass for so many years.

Hard to tell from the video, but it looks like that testpoint doesn't go to the resistor, it goes between the resistors and under the chip. Might have connected MISO to MOSI. I think it might still work if the communication is only one way, but you might get some weird issues if there needs to be two way communication.

Just a thought about Apple design flaws: given how often Apple designers place a high power trace next to a sensitive data line trace, have you considered submitting a Standards Improvement Form to IPC specifically detailing in board design how far a high power trace should be from sensitive data line (in any electronics board design), and why? If it were approved then Apple would be violating an accepted, approved IPC standard when they do that.

Louis, does repair wiki only applies for hardware repairs? I would contribute for a lot of software issues on some machines that are not well documented. For example, very specific quirks in some laptops that can be fixed or workarounded but is not well documented on the web. I have a document at work with a list of specific issues on specific devices and the fixes to go with them. Not always hardware but I would be very happy to help. For example, I have two models of touchscreen POSes at work that have a very buggy proprietary touchscreen driver but nowhere on the web is said that you can actually uninstall their proprietary drivers (which also causes BSODs) and force Windows to use its one multi touch HID driver which actually works. The company charges extra if you want a multitouch screen instead on single touch but just getting rid of their drivers removes that limitation.
