Manjaro unstable sometimes holds packages back 1-2 weeks if they have regressions. I had way less bugs on Manjaro compared to CachyOS, but no bad problems with either. Overall it's not worth losing a ton of performance with Manjaro, but I do think it's the least buggy Arch distro if you don't mess with the AUR and install from multiple repos. I agree with you though, once you learn Arch with Manjaro there really isn't a point in using it and deleting it and installing something else makes sense. Using BTRFS and snapper and chroot you can pretty much solve anything that would ever happen on CachyOS related to having a problem with a buggy too new package.

I use Nobara, currently, and i will say, it is a bit disappointing. Gaming-wise, it's great, but, it... definitely feels like the OS is still in alpha-test... It's missing a video-player out of the box, you can install whichever you want, obviously, but it doesn't come with a video player by default. And the "app store" is text-based, and confusing AF, it desperately needs an overhaul ASAP. It also has some issues with certain flatpaks, i can't tell what, specifically, is wrong, but i had a very weird issue with JamesDSP where Nobara couldn't read certain files and folders, because they were using Norwegian letters or something, which is weird, because i can write Norwegian letters just fine: "ÆØÅ æøå". And because Nobara couldn't read those files and folders, it was ALSO unable to delete them properly when i tried to uninstall them... I had to force-delete them via the terminal. So yeah, Nobara works for gaming, but, it's lacking a lot of things that make it a FINISHED, COMPLETE operating system... If i ever swap OS again, i'm swapping to PikaOS or CachyOS next... I need an OS that can handle Parametric Equalizers, like JamesDSP.

I respect the BigLinux developers for their work and also for being a Brazilian distro, but I always told the developers to stay away from Manjaro and use the Arch repositories... I only ended up picking Nobara as my distro because a couple things were easier out of the box for my needs. I use Bazzite exactly in that context, it's in Steam mode on my living room TV. It doesn't get any easier out of the box than that. I have not tried Pika, but I look forward to playing with it in the near future. Love this one. Been waiting for a while to see what you thought, and I agree with most of your choices. PikaOS has been a bit of a surprise for me, and I'm currently waffling between that and Cachy as my daily driver (Arch/AUR is hard to deny). I was kinda suprised by NixOS being in slot three, since it takes so much know-how to get set up (I've tried and given up several times), but I agree that once it's set up, you're set for life. I've also seen some projects to try to make gaming-oriented nix configs, so it's definitely something the community is interested in doing. If the main team can iron out the onboarding process for new users and improve some of the documentation, I think they'll have something that's at or near feature-parity with Bazzite.

I agree on the sentiment regarding Fedora. I love Fedora. It’s home for me. It’s reminiscent of the days when I first started in Linux with RedHat 8, 9, then Fedora Core. That being said, to get Fedora to the place that gaming and content creation is feasible, one must install non-free packages via the command line.

After a few months running CachyOS with a shared homedir partition alongside Nobara which I'd used for a year or two, I made the permanent switch to Cachy and wiped Nobara clear, no regrets! I prefer the way arch is put together over Fedora, and Nobara graphical and cpu performance is improved further. Incidentally I run Debian 12 on my laptops because I just want them stable, and fewer OS updates, is fewer changes, and with the same flatpaks I used on my desktop.

Yeah Bazzite offers a great out-of-box experience for gaming, it is very similar to the SteamOS with better defaults and more poweruser features. Personally, I've already used it on Steam Deck when it was still in the early adoption phase, but it was rather unstable in terms of performance and user experience, so I went back to SteamOS. It only had a single maintainer and they did a lot of work alone. I am glad that there are now more contributors and my issues seems to have been fixed since then (or got stale). I recommend using it if you intend to install the same set of software for gaming. Also, please don't use Gnome if you plan to use a touch screen.

I had less frustration with gaming on Fedora than with Garuda. Those bolocks like "ooh its optimized for gaming" and other bold claims are maybe true to some extend but making that distro useless for day to day came with that. Maybe you get +5 FPS on average, but the system is broken with too many customizations, dependencies so after every update I was figuring out what exactly went south.. I was troubleshooting broken dependencies in updates like 4 times before I just wiped this garbage from my drive. Installed Fedora, ticked the box that I want to access third party repos, installed nvidia drivers and had absolutely zero problems since. And every update on fedora I do not have to figure out what package I have to put to exclude list every 2 damn weeks

CachyOS is definitely a very good distro. I find it between number 1 and 3, where i put Debian and Slack. I find these clean and quick. But im not a gamer. I find that the games distro's are usually my choice because of the configuration and optimizations that make it quick. Cachy has proved to be a gem. I like debian because i can communicate with all my other nodes using ssh which i find as a quick way to get files from and to the nodes. Slack is sleek and very powerful. I usually go for gaming laptops because they are more powerful. I like a system that doesn't lag at all. Cachy on VM is amazingly fast. Imagine it on a new baremetal system! WOW im pretty sure. One of the determining factors is the DM. i was xfce now im kde but i never liked gnome. So i stay away from gnome based Distros. I used DWM but in the end, if you like to fall down the configuration rabbit hole, its a gem as well. I like to get in do my stuff and make changes effortlessly so i can go do what i turned on the computer for.....scripting, note taking, and films thanks for the excellent video.

Can you include Porteux Linux in your testing? I mean Porteux, not Porteus. It would be interesting to see the results compared to CachyOS and maybe Clear Linux for Intel CPUs. In future videos and tests, it might also be worth trying Clear Linux on an Intel CPU and perhaps a B580 Intel GPU. Clear Linux has best drivers and optimizations specifically for Intel CPUs and GPUs. Additionally, CachyOS has excellent optimizations and tweaks that can significantly improve PC performance and gaming. Porteux Linux is also very fast and responsive. Some tests show it to be one of the fastest distributions, and it definitely has the fastest boot speed. I think we should give it a try for gaming to see how it performs.

I personally have used Pop!_OS, Mint, Tumbleweed and now CachyOS, and by far CachyOS has been the best, but I wouldn't recommend it for a total newbie, cause the usability is not as good as with something else. Using any but the nobara one can and often will mess things up. That's confusing for new users. Hell even for me it's caused me issues. It also feels sloppy. This is why Pika is so good IMO. If feels/looks like Nobara but with the rest of the polish. Like it's 100% Pika. Nobara is 80% Fedora and 20% Nobara but the Fedora isn't even hidden as well as Mint hides Ubuntu. You have a strong french accent, so i'll say it to you in french: Ce que tu as dis sur Debian est partiellement faux. AVERTISSEMENT: SI TU FAIS CA N'ESSAIE SURTOUT PAS D'INSTALLER LES META PACKAGES (linux-image-amd64 par exemple) CAR TU RISQUE D'AVOIR QUELQUES SURPRISES...

Is it from a NVIDIA user point of view or it includes AMD as a POV ? I feel Linux Mint might be a better experience for AMD users. However I would have put it in the no thanks for NVIDIA and kept it in Ok but for AMD. Linux mint is fine when it gets a refresh of its core and packages, but after two years it's getting very old. On top of it, they are 4 months late of Ubuntu which is already 1 year late of Debian. And it's not that stable when you upgrade (can even break completely). CachyOS requires urgently a KDE UI passionate. I don't know what they are thinking with this tacky layout ^^It was best to leave KDE alone tbh :D Superbe vidéo, bro

Lol Kinoite is pretty much al most like Bazzite (atomic fedora desktop with KDE) and its on the worst Tier, while Bazzite is top Tier.A bit exagerated i think. Ok it doesn't come with all the optimisations and custom kernel that Bazzite provides, but the packages are new as it is Fedora and if you compare the two they are al most the same, you might gain 3-4% performance with Bazzite at most, if even that! I went from silverblue to Bazzite Gnome version and saw 0 noticeable difference in performance at all, they both worked out of the box. I'd say Kinoite is a great stable and reliable distro for average desktop users that want to game on the side and don't want to tweak anything , and it does just that with 0 issues (unlike the often unstable and unreliable Arch options on this list!) . It deserves a higher rank.

Putting Nobara 2 tiers above Fedora is very hilarious

I agree with putting Manjaro, Elementary and Zorin in hell no, though. Jesus fucking Christ those are terrible for anything but office work and watching youtube.

Potential statement on MX Linux "oh this the best distro" Answer from Airmax "no, it’s not"… efficiency ! I would add that it might be one of the worst distro…

I get That Manajro isnt going to be top by any means but Hell no? I mean OK its your opinion and fine but there are way worse distros gaming wise. As far as issues and errors. I have had way more issues and errors on distros like Endeavour and Tumbleweed. I run Manjaro Testing branch. Why do I not just use Endeavor or Arch? Because Manjaro comes with everything set up out of the box that I want. Its themed well and has a consistent look across grub terminal and the desktop theme. On Endeavour and Arch I have to do ton of setting up to get thing working how I want. So that's why I still stick with Manajro. But yeh I get this is an opinion piece and you are welcome to your opinion. But heres mine.

I ran into an issue when first trying PikaOS then trying to do a fresh install of CachyOS on that same drive. What solved it for me was sudo wipefs -a /dev/nvme0n1 Looks like cachy doesn’t always wipe the boot loader partition properly leading to failure of boot partition installation. You don’t even get the option to choose boot loader and the partition is not even shown anywhere. Hopefully this helps someone.

Manjaro should be top because you'd never run out of content and drama to cover :D.

i'm running bazzite on my asus ROG Ally and it's been surprising however, i have to say, the fedora 41 base can be quite buggy with KDE so i switched to gnome and now my problems seem to be gone for now

All these different distros really highlights one of the major issues with Linux. It’s way too segmented. How many people are replicating the same work for all these distos? If we could get all these people to band together on 5% of the distros it would accelerate development of Linux so much. Most of these distos have no reason to exist.

I have been exclusively gaming on Linux for about 4 or 5 years now as a novice Linux end user. It is night and day from where it was when I started. Gaming is the primary use of my computers at home also. However, I really want to support gaming focused distro's for the idea of the work being done on them. However, I still experience issues on every one I try. I have 3 different systems with different hardware in them, and all of them still have issues still with gaming focused distros as a normal gaming user ( I try different distros about every 6 months to check progress ). I think it hurts new users to continue to recommend these distro's to new linux gamers unfortunately. I get that some people get lucky and it works for them, but something tells me they are still needing to tinker with them in many cases because I have different systems to test, and they always run some games fine but others have issues. Sometimes I have other OS UI glitches too that seem to come from Wayland here and there. OS's I am referring too include Nobara, Garuda, and even more recent versions of POP OS. All this to also say however, all hate aside, there is one OS that happens to run plug and play excellent on every system I put it on, and the games JUST RUN, and run great at that. That OS is Linux Mint. I know people love to hate it, but if you are not a Linux wizard that can fix everything that other OS's throw at them on an individual game basis sometimes, I would stop knocking Mint. When you want it to JUST WORK... I would try it before giving up on Linux if you are having issues with the "cool new gaming OS" out there that you may be struggling with.

ubuntu over tuxedo? huh? ok. but didnt had Tuxedo like better performance on the test stream? but yes i understand the rating cause some functions are bound to special hardware but still it just works and its gets stuff done.
