I run Zorin free ver & yes it’s a older kernel . I found Wi-Fi had a problem with Broadcom & Qualcomm cards used in thousands of laptops . You will need terminal but when looking for info go by date . Wine works but sometimes it just stops working & it’s almost a impossible fix . ( I just use Bottles ) Zorin is a locked down OS . It will remove non-standard apps or drivers , or it can just gets ignored . I have seen it install programs & refuse to run it . It can remove your nice new working add-on , mod , driver or program . If your lucky with hardware & you just need a browser , e mail & video it’s a good OS . But software is not the OS Zorin upgrading free OS is a horrid experience ! Bit banging for 2 days & it falls over ( in 2024 ) . System recovered with timeshift ……. ( In 3 years i haven't totally killed it ) . Ps You can up date the kernel with “Mainline” . But lock in the old kernel . Kernel 6.1 had problems with SD cards , USB devices Also the standard set of congestion control's may not be included !

What I would suggest is if moving to Linux and you have to have some apps and programs that are not feasible to use on Linux, I would suggest that you keep a Windows system just for them and still switch to linux on another system as your main daily driver when home so you can learn it, get use to operating and using what Linux has to offer. Many Jobs and Businesses require you to use Windows and some of those Programs and apps. And I find Zorin or Mint great for new users. Zorin gives a more windows like interface that a windows user will find useful as they learn linux and what it has to offer. It's based off of Ubuntu and Zorin also has a paid version that's for Real time support " of which I have used and they do respond quite quickly to what I needed and even a suggestion I gave them which is i n the Documentation which they did do. And they have the free versions and the community and forums and all the Docs a person might need to. And I have used those also. Until people learn that they can make Linux how ever they want. And that Linux is just a kernel and it's what's hooked into the kernel that Makes a distro what it is. " That they themselves if they want to, can make Linux whatever they want themselves " Even create their very own Distro or Version "Fork " of Linux if they want. And enjoy the privacy that Linux will and does provide. It is considerably more secure than windows but security " Has to be Learned " no matter what OS you use even on Linux it is just better secured. It's generally the operator in Linux that can kill there own security. It doesn't need a lot like windows to run, in general depending on the Distro or fork that you install and on the hardware. And even Gaming has come a long long way. Still some humps to over come but Steam has join the fray and that really helps on the gaming side of things. As Linux gets more market share and use, then Dev's of games and other software will start looking at this to, and start making their software even more compatible. This will bring Linux even more into the forefront as a Viable Operating system for a lot of people. Why do you think Microsoft dislikes linux so much, they see the potential of the OS and what it can do. And have since the 90's they hated Linux with a passion. And you can thank all those Geeks and Nerds out there for making it what it is today. Even Nvidia sees what's on the Blackboard. I say this not to dispute you but to say there's more then one great Version or Distro to start Linux with. The thing most people from Windows don't get is they have " Options " that Windows just doesn't or will ever provide. And once Microsoft moves over to subscription service. Their will be a lot of people really looking into Linux. Microsoft only cares about it's bottom line not the people that even make that possible. To Microsoft, you are just a product to be used. Nothing more.

Thank you for all the videos A1R. I've finally made the switch to Linux this week. After some testing on the laptops, ended up in Linux Mint for now. Everyhthing works, reminds me a bit of windows (which I have been using exclusively since 1998). Since now I only play CS2 so far even the performance is good. The only downside Im having is likely with CS2 servers and some lag.

The problem şs file system. I understand how windows works. Appdata, program files, temp etc. I know what is going on. But not so sure about linux.

As someone looking to install linux dual boot on a win 10 system (to second m.2 drive) I was VERY surprised (not so much scared) when you chose "erase disk" instead of "alongside". It's probably why you had boot menu issues after install. In my experience "erase disk" means "I want this new OS to be the only OS on my machine". If selecting "alongside" I would expect to be able to either install to the same disk as Windows by shrinking the partition and creating a new one for linux, or selecting another disk and telling the installer to use that either fully or partially (what I want to do). It should then also correctly add the expected boot menu option. But anyway, as shown in this video linux installers are still misleading and/or poorly tested software. So disappointing for such an critical task.

In my research I have come across a decade old installer bug that I believe affects all Ubuntu and descendant distros (like Mint). This bug will ignore your installer selection and overwrite the existing boot loader (not the actual OS) requiring manual editing of the boot partition to be able to start Windows again. Just painful for non linux experts.

Yes, I already switched. I've dabbled in Linux for years, and now my Microsoft Surface laptop is running Linux Mint. I haven't found anything I can't do yet, and the only software I haven't found a duplicate for is Grammarly since they don't support any of the linux office suits.

It's solid feedback, but as far as I'm aware, the only tests you do yourself, are on a single machine. The reality is that a one single distro will perform differently across a multiple of setups, and that's exactly Nicks point. ;) Gaming distros are, however, often made by a single developer, or a very small team. They're likely to just pack up their shit, and leave the project, or too slow to keep up with critical updates of their own components. Unlike any established desktop distro that aren't going anywhere.

I am stuck on Windows Island until a boat can take PaintDotNet off here with me... GIMP, Krita, etc. are not good equivalents, you need multiple to get ALMOST the same level of functionality, and said functionality is what I require from it in the first place. It's quite sad, I really want to drive Linux Mint full time, but until I get Paintdotnet on there I can't.

It tries to look like Windows and installing the bootloader on the wrong disk is such a Windows thing to do. Job well done, kinda.

I think at this point the future workforce that will be supporting desktop environments are going to be equally versed in Linux configuration as they are in Windows. Some oldies as me may be impacted, but it's negligible in a sense that in any case THINGS ARE CHANGING and ultimately it will be learned that Linux, while will require you to re-imagine how an OS works and my opinion is that Linux is more transparent to explain how a desktop actually works whereas Windows is considerably more mysterious to a layperson. This is paramount to really understanding how we can improve the environment. If you think about it, as a foundation of understanding when it comes to the usability and performance of a content provider and even just a gamer, we all have a small part to play in making it better. Wouldn't you as a user of the environment for you purpose, want to know more about what make it all work? If so, would that help you have a legit and structured opinion of what makes the experience good and what can be better. In the Windows world it's designed to protect users from what components that impact your purpose. I guess I'm saying that if you are on this channel, you already know what I'm talking about and can see that there is only one way. Arch.
