I have 2 suggestions to fix your issues. The loose leather grips. Remove the grips and spread silicon glue on the handlebar ends underneath where the grips normally are, and then reinstall the grips, let dry for a day. Your second issue, the phone holder. Remove the holder, wrap the handlebar with Teflon plumbers tape until the handlebar diameter is an equal diameter, then reinstall the phone holder.

After reviewing specs and video reviews (like yours), I settled on the Rad City ST for my 4’10 wife. Although I like some other ST models slightly better (Buzz, Ride1Up), in the end, the Rad City just checked all the boxes in terms of quality, design, service, and value added pricing. Have to say that the two negatives on this bike for me were 1) the low torque, and 2) the weight. Having said that, I figured torque to be a none issue in the case of a 110 pound rider on paved Texas flatland greenways. She also wanted a quiet hub motor which ruled out the rather noisy Buss mid drive ( my personal favorite). I believe the Rad City ST is one of only a few full sized ebikes on the market today that she would feel secure in riding.

yea I was in the same boat, although today we might have purchased the rad rover step through bc of our hills to get the motor with more torque. My wife is always jealous when I leave her off the line!

Been shopping for my 1st e-bike. I was already starting to narrow down the field to 3 or 4 bikes and was leaning toward the RadPower City. Wasn't decided yet on the Step-Thru? After watching your excellent video review, I'm pretty sure I will end up going with the RadPower City Step Thru. I'm 62 , 5'7" and around 135 lbs and want to feel comfortable with the bike for years to come. I think with the 60 lb plus bike weigth I'll be happier longer with the Step Thru...especially if I'm carrying cargo. I live up in Black Mtn NC so we've got quite a number of hills. I'm not that concerned about speed and I believe the RadCity will handle most of the hills ok...especially with my pedaling to aid the motor. I will be mostly on paved surfaces but do want to do some flat gravel and dirt paths on ocassion so I'm glad to see the wider tires. I'll probably add a suspension seat/post to add a little more comfort on the bumps. I'm orginally from Greer SC and do plan to come down to Greenville and ride the Swamp Rabbit sometime. I'm stretching my budget on this purchase and after purchasing helmet, gloves, mirrors, etc..... I don't think I'll be able to afford a vehicle rack at present. I'm hoping it might fit into my Dodge Grand Caravan. Thanks again.

@@JohnDDyer It was about $150. I'm waiting for better weather to go that far. The motor takes about 200 watts average without much pedaling. The Rad power supply delivers 2 amps at 48V or about 100 watts. So if I stop as much time as I ride, the bike should be fully charged when I arrive home!

Jeff Morency. Thanks for sharing your comment! I want to be able to travel further with an Ebike. I'm mentally planning a trip from Washington to Kansas on an Ebike. If that works well, then maybe take it even further to the east coast. I've thought about solar power to recharge the battery but is that practical? Does anyone have any reliable resources or know of people that have done solar on an Ebike? Having a power bank and using solar sounds ideal. If the trip doesn't happen, I'm still planning on living car free and will purchase an ebike soon. Thank you John D Dyer for your video as well. The Radcity is probably the model I'm considering the most. The other is the wagon, but I fear that may be to heavy of a bike.
@HarmonicResearch5 жыл бұрын
@@denise3487 When testing the Powkey 200W unit, I discovered that it only powers the RAD power supply for about an hour which delivers 2 amps for an hour which is 2 amp hours into the RAD 14 amp hour battery. It looks like much of the energy is lost being transformed from 12VDC in the Powkey to 120VAC to 48VDC from the RAD power supply for the RAD battery. A much better solution is to use a second RAD battery to swap out when one dies. Or, buy a Chinese 48V batt and simply add its output to the RAD battery output. Then you would have double the amp hours available.
@E-BikingAdventures4 жыл бұрын
@@denise3487. I watched a video of a guy who had 2 big ass panels on the back of his bike. Maybe on a trailer. I can't remember. The solar was continuously connected and keeping the battery topped up. There are many problems with this. The first thing is that lithium batteries do not like to be topped up at full voltage every time you charge them, and even worse to be kept at full voltage. This will drastically effect the life span of the battery. If you go solar, do not do this. Or limit the output voltage to below the battery voltage. Another thing about solar is that the panels are very large and add weight. If you are riding with them while in use, they can create all sorts of problems from wind drag. The amount of framing and added hardware will add even more weight. The best thing would be to have some light weight fold up panels, and set them up when you take a break in a park or some picnic area.

What brand are those mirrors and are they any good? For your wet wires issue go to your auto store and ask for Dielectric grease and use it as directed on the connectors. Should seal it up and make it more waterproof. It's meant for electrical connections in vehicles. Yes, so fun. I went out and picked up some groceries today and its only 40F (warmest day of the week!) I've got a year and 900 miles on mine. My chain went the first winter and rusted severely due to road salt. good review but I was expecting your thoughts about the difference between the gearless motor on the City and the geared motor on the Rover....I found it interesting that your display pad shows watt output of 700 at times (???)... I have a 2019 City ST and a 2019 Mini...neither bike will show/put out more than 497 or 498W....must be a change in controller programming from 2018 to 19. I highly recommend spending a few extra bucks for the suspension seat post RadPower offers as an option....makes the City feel like a big old Cadillac going down the road. Got them on both bikes. When I first rode the City I found it irritating to have to move my right hand to shift gears....I swapped the position of the shifter for the brake clamp....to make that happen you have to grind/file a bit off the top of the brake clamp but that's easy enough (aluminium)...now the shifter is right tight to the throttle body and your thumb can reach it without moving your hand....rear brake application becomes a 2 or 3 finger operation but that works just fine. (Depending if the diameter of your bars change near the throttle body you might need a longer screw to secure the shifter to the bar). Both my bikes are set up like that now.
@JohnDDyer4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Francois, at some point I wanted to do some hill climb and acceleration comparisons between the two bikes, its on the list! I will have to check our the seat post, I am sure both our bikes could benefit from that, a Caddy ride sounds awesome!
@francoislepine46984 жыл бұрын
@@JohnDDyer Since I posted before I have figured out what my concern was about the controller on my bikes....it appears that RadPower Bikes progams the controllers of the bikes exported to Canada to be limited to 500W maximum (they say it's to fit a Canadian Class 2 ebike regulation). I am 99% sure that Rad does not produce separate bikes for the small Canadian market...they just program the controllers differently. This does not affect the top speed of either of the bikes (Mini and City) but it does hurt acceleration...which is too bad, especially on the City that has lower torque value to begin with (gearless motor). The fix for me would be to get my hands on a programmer (?) or find two used or new American controllers (that will allow 750W to flow to the motor) Still very happy with both bikes but this is cautionary tale for Canadian buyers...especially considering the City.

Trying to decide between the rad city step thru 3 or the rad mini step thru 2. Really want something to be able to ride some dirt/gravel roads and trails and beaches. Thoughts on the radcity being able to hand this?
@shaysnk4 жыл бұрын
Great video. I am currently trying to decide between the RadCity Step Thru and the RadRover Step Thru but I am not sure which one would be better. I am new to the ebike world and am looking for a fast, comfortable leisure rider to cruise around that can be used on mostly paved and gravel trails (but some minor mountain trails too) and also grass but that can go up hills without issue. Some people have said the RadRover has trouble going up hills or that the RadCity has drag without using pedal assist. Do you find that one bike makes it up the hills easier or one you prefer over another? My main needs are comfort and enough power to go up hills easily without stalling out. I also have back issues and am short like your wife at just under 5'3 so of course I am limited to the smaller options but found that RadPower has good short people options.
@JohnDDyer4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Shay! I was actually thinking about making a video on this.... there is a pretty big difference in hill climb between the 2 bikes due to the different motor type. The Rad rover has a geared motor and it has about 2x the torque so it’s faster off the line and can climb hills better. For very steep hills my little wife has to pedal her bike with full throttle while I can just throttle without pedaling. Now she does consistently use less battery than I do since her direct drive has regenerative braking and I think it’s more efficient. I personally like the extra torque from the geared motor in the rover but the direct drive works fine too
@ShayS274 жыл бұрын
John D Dyer thanks for the quick reply! I am leaning towards the rover, especially now but I do have one concern. Since the tires are so big, is it hard to pedal the bike when it is not in any type of assist mode? I really want to be able to ride it for exercise sometimes without having any drag or being super hard to pedal. Some people have said it’s pretty hard and has drag without the assist. Also, have you ridden any other ebikes and if so, how have you found them to compare overall to the rad power bikes? Is the rover loud at all? There are way too many options! Thanks again!

@@francoislepine4698 Thank you for that tidbit! I've been watching every video I can find on the RadR. I'm going to have to get two so my guy and or nieces can ride with me!!
@francoislepine46984 жыл бұрын
@@leslieroma-smith1311 well if you're going to get two, Rad has a standing 200 dollar discount for ordering two bikes at once....and if it was me I'm not sure I'd get two identical bikes....I see that a lot with couples and I don't think it's ideal...in my opinion it's a missed opportunity. I have a Mini and a City ST....two people could ride down the road side by side all day but the City does it better and is more comfortable....same goes for gravel bikeways but the Mini does that better and is more comfortable to ride on those...the Mini can be used on single track trails while the City is just about useless on those (you don't want to do it)....if YOU are going to buy two (and bear the cost), you might as well get way more flexibility for yourself riding alone (that's going to be the majority of your time riding anyway probably)....just something to think about

Great review! I am 5'4" and I'm trying to decide on which model. It seems like the Radcity is a better value for the money when it comes to specs. I also wondered about the swept back feel, whether I'd find it strange or not. How do you feel about it after having it for longer?
@stephenm61842 жыл бұрын
I would think that swept back are better for shorter folks. You don't have to lean forward, you are more upright. It's more comfortable.

Thanks Bruce! The bike rack that comes built in on the Rad city doesn’t have a hitch but I would imagine you could add one! Also just keep in mind that the Rad rovers regular and step thru) will have more torque than the city since they have a geared motor. Might be better for towing 😃

@@JohnDDyer Thanks John. I'm still out researching ebikes. I am now leaning towards folding ebikes like the Rad Mini or Lectric XP Step thru. Depends if you like throwing ur leg over. My wife likes the step thru. I recently got to ride my cousins rad rover step thru and it was a great bike, best of both worlds! I'm thinking of getting one for the wife but she'd need to be able to mount a child seat on the cargo rack and be able to pull a trailer. Are there any physical and or legal limitations to this? Our child seat is rack mounted but wasn't sure if the tubing was too thick or the rack too short.

well I really like any of the rad bikes, they are a little expensive between $1300 and $1500 but they seem really well made. I think you would really like the Rad Rover Step through becuase you could strap your cooler to the back rack and still be able to mount the bike without having to throw your leg over the cooler. You could also put come paniers on the side (I like these amzn.to/2qVJmsY). If you end up buying a Rad you can use my code to get $50 off, its not much but its something! www.talkable.com/x/IsOSTA

You said your wife is 4'11" and the snippet of video showed her peddling and with a full or almost full leg extension. Does she have any trouble maintaining her balance once she stops the bike?? I bought the 2019 step-thru a couple of weeks ago but maintaining balance once I stop seems to be my biggest problem. Pointing my left toe toward the ground and 'tapping' along until I come to a complete stop seems to help. I have my seat adjusted with an almost full ledge extension to get some power to my leg movement. Also, my handlebars were adjusted at a 20° angle and I changed that to a 30° angle to give me a bit more of an upright riding position. Plus moving my seat back as far as safely possible helped immensely. If I could just get my balance under control when stopping I'd enjoy my excursions a *lot* more. If you have any tips, I'm all ears. 😊
@JohnDDyer5 жыл бұрын
well we started off with her having her seat really low and not getting full extension, she did that for a while and relied more on the PAS and throttle. After a while of that she got stronger and her balance got better and then we increased the seat height with out any issues. My wife has been struggling with Chronic back pain and hasn't been able to exercise much so she was pretty weak at the beginning, but even if you arent pedaling just being on the bike and balancing is better than nothing until those muscles can get stronger. Thats what worked for us....let us know how it goes!
@itsjoannotjoann50705 жыл бұрын
@@JohnDDyer --- I lowered my seat and even though I don't get an almost full leg extension I was able to peddle and of course use the pedal assist today and did *7* miles! Maybe when I do get stronger and a bit more confidant with my balance when stopping I'll begin to raise my seat a bit more each week or two. But my Skecher's 'Shape Up' tennis shoes with the rounded sole just isn't cutting it for me. I'm going to have to try my just regular flat soled tennis shoes and see how that helps with keeping my feet on the pedals.
