Think about it. How far can you go in your car, after leaving your home, in 11 minutes and 30 seconds? This plane went from jetway rollback, to high above the clouds in that same amount of time. That's really showcasing the marvel of the advances of all this technology. I think that is so cool. Way to go to everyone involved.

Man airplanes are gonna lose their soul for a while until we adjust to it, and then once we hardcore aviationist get over ourselves, we can start to appreciate the engineering and science that went into making these machines safer and quieter, and also more efficient. Right now I'm offended though yet impressed at the same time. lol
@WinginWolf7 жыл бұрын
Yup, definitely not the most exciting aircraft from a spotter's perspective (in regards to the quieter engines), but there's still plenty to appreciate.

They won't buzz. The purpose of the reduction gear is to make the fan rotate below transonic blade tip speed and to allow the turbine to rotate much faster than the fan.

PW absolutely nailed it with the geared turbofan engine. It's a huge feat of engineering to make the fan spin three times less than the turbine. It keeps the fan tips subsonic thus decreasing noise and vibration as we can hear on this video. I hope the authorities will force PW and GE to combine their technologies into one engine with the potential of reducing by 30% noise and atmospheric pollution.
@srinitaaigaura8 жыл бұрын
The technology has much more growth potential. If they start putting exotic materials and the like, P&W feels they can be more than 30% efficient than current engines. That's huge.
@gendaminoru31957 жыл бұрын
I thought it was 20%, but then given the semantics of advertising we never really know what they are comparing it to. The LEAP engine also made claims that are hard to evaluate but not nearly as much as P&W GTF. I think the success of this also scared off Rolls-Royce from their open rotor concept. GE open rotor was 30% better than the P&W JT8-200 of the day on MD-88. But what are they comparing this one to? V2500?

RR nailed it many years ago with the 3 spool RB211 series of engines! Short rigid spools with none of the shaft bowing issues of the PW1000.

I flew a320neo for the first time couple of days ago, and comparing it to the older generations, it sounded ''weaker'' (quieter) than the older generation, but still performed the same, or even better. quite impressive, and also for passenger comfort, a bit more relaxing probably. still i like the buzzsaw of the cfm and similar engines (because i grew up with it), but people will probably say the same about the cfm-leap engines etc. its going to be interesting to see how it will be in the future

The plane sounds like a lower-volume 787. Probably because of the relatively slow speed of the front fan compared to many other high-bypass engine types.
@Aung19888 жыл бұрын
Thats exactly right. Thanks to the gear reduction technology, the fan can run at slower speeds.

a lot of new turbofans have a geared LP compressor (fan) it is designed to put less stress on the blade roots as well as the shaft, on older engines the buzz comes from the fan going super sonic at full power, while great sounding, it is a higher chance of a stress induced failure
