Excellent video , i struggle when to descend and often overshoot the airport if im not concentrating.. ive never used the "Top of descent" and entered into fix info .. Will do next flight .. Thx Captain 🛬

For the TOD, I look at the STAR to see what my first altitude constraint is. Then on the EFB, I will sync the current altitude, then enter the constraint altitude, and it will calculate the distance I will need to descend to that altitude. Then I can use FIX INFO to add the target waypoint with the constraint and the distance from the EFB calculation as the radius, and it will draw a ring around the waypoint so you will have a visual representation of the TOD

In the real plane, I use vert speed a lot on arrivals. Set the lowest altitude of the first contraint. Plan on about 1000 fpm. Start down when (change in altitude FL equals minutes prior to the first constraint to start descent) at the appropriate time and adjust vert speed to keep the level off arrow "hockey stick" on or slightly before the constraint (a little after the constraint if its an altitude window). After the first constraint you can set a lower altitude and use Managed Descent. A320 series do a lousy job in Managed Descent (VNAV) compared to Boeings. If you nail the first constraint , it'll do a decent job in Managed Descent after that. 1000 fpm is nice and comfortable for the passengers. Nice low cabin rate of change.

I take back the suggestion I made about the descending technique after trying it with the A320nx for the first time as the A320 is too fast to make such calculations manually on the fly. My technique is impractical and too cumbersome. Your use of managed altitude and speed constraints for STARS is the most efficient especially for heavy metal aircraft like the A320 as it allows you to have free time to do other important tasks like atc communications, checking the ATIS, etc.

Great video. What would you suggest if a STAR has a manual leg? What’s the best approach to fly such a STAR if you’re offline and the ATC isn’t there to give you vectors. Would the Auto Pilot catch the Nav again once you manually fly the leg back to the path?
@RealSimPilot2 жыл бұрын
Fly it in selected heading mode until you get back to the nav path the you can use managed mode again.

15:58 what does the ''activate approach phase'' actually do / change in the airplane? thanks for the tutorial, very helpful :)

@@RealSimPilot I planned a flight on Simbrief EGCC->LEPA but what I don't understand is the FL was FL230 and it was marked as TOC on the chart but then there was another step climb to FL350. How do I deal with this in the FMC? Thanks

It will slow down accordingly as you extend the flaps provided you have inserted the data in the approach performance page on the mcdu and you have activated the approach phase in the mcdu. No need to follow the flight directors

In real life, are you allowed to calculate a TOD and start a descent on your own? Or do you have to follow ATC?
@RealSimPilot3 жыл бұрын
I would assume it's calculated by the fmgc based on distance and altitude to destination. atc usually knows when you need to start your descent and will tell you to descend when ready. You can also request to descend when required.
@benc11033 жыл бұрын
You need a clearance to start descent. Sometimes ATC forgets and you need to ask for "lower" when you get close to your TOD. Sometimes they leave you high (past TOD) for traffic and you'll need speedbrakes to get back on the vertical path. In that case, before ATC gives you the descent, start slowing down to green dot if you are not assigned a speed. That way you can at least reduce your energy level prior to the late descent. During the descent, you can run the speed back up to normal, which will increase your descent rate and help you get back on the profile. You still might need speedbrakes. At lower altitudes when below Gear speed, dropping the gear is sometimes the only thing you can do. Below 10,000 ft, on the 321 you gotta get to Flaps 2 to get the plane down in a hurry. "Flaps 2 and 205 kts is your friend" (for those 210 kts speed assignments). If ATC screws up badly, just tell them "Unable".
