Final approach to Cape Town International airport runway 01. See the British Airways 747 holding short for departure and watch how gentle the landing is - you can see the wing unload by bending down and look closely to see how perfectly the pilot keeps the airplane aligned on the runway... excellent job!

South African Airways orders all their jets to have "winglets", so no matter what model, they will all have it, custom designs bru. I believe the correct term is a 'Vortex generator'. damn that was an excellent landing, goes to show how well trained our pilots are. 100% south african

@trabbin8 yes.if needed all airbuses can take off again the way you say. You have stages on the throttle on a airbus. you have idle thats stage 1,that will disengage the autothrust automaticly. You have speed(stage2) that will do so the plane follows FMC speed,or set MCP speed.Flex(Stage 3) that is for takeoff ,and TOGA(stage 4) that is for things like you described. Not sure, but i think all 3 last stages engage the MCP autothrust automaticly.Last stage(Stage 4) will set aircraft for takeoff

@EliasOwndYou Don't worry, (wing Flex) Is totaly normal in any aircraft. Just know that the aircrafts wings are actualy carrying the entire weight of the plane and are designed to flex to help reduce stress and make a smoother flight. Nothing is bad about this. Just be glad it isn't soild.

the A340 normally rolls right to the end before taxiing back. CT Runway 01 is 11.000 feet

@trabbin8 I believe it may be possible, though it depends on how far the obstruction is down the runway, the weight of the aircraft, the speed it was at when the decision was made. It has many variables, though i believe it can be done.

Yes I know what TOGA is. But since I am not a pilot, I don't know when a TOGA is still possible or not, e.g., when the spoilers are just deployed. But thanks for your highly collegial response.

Landing looked super smooth. Question for pilots - suppose in such a landing at about time point 55 seconds after the spoilers deploy, something enters the runway ahead of the aircraft (assume the entering object is far away and the runway is long). Can the aircraft do a go-around at this point in the landing sequence, i.e, after spoilers deploy but still a lot of ground speed? I guess another way of asking, is there a "TOGA" button/system that will stow spoilers and apply go-around power?

Please.. do some research... you are right about this isnt a 747-100,but the 100 was NOT the SP... SP model was developed to do ultra long flights... all 747's from 100 to 400 have the exact same length(70.6 metres).. only the 747-8 is extended in length.. 747SP is over 14 metres shorter than the 747-1/2/3 and 400 series.

@weemadatif2k7 That is not a 747-100. Last active BA 747-100 was at January 1st 2001. And also the upper deck on this 747 is way to long for it to be a -100 series... Its a very nice 747-400 :D easy to see that on the upper deck that was exctended on the 747-300 and -400 :D

natbrain, thanks, but actually the crux of my curiosity is when is the "last point" (given a really long runway) that pilots can get the plane out of landing configuration and do a go around? Is the pilot committed to landing once the spoilers have deployed?
