Very RARE Sight caught on camera!! QATAR Airways AIRBUS A350-900 FRONT GEAR DOES NOT RETRACT after Takeoff while the Main Gears do Retract! First I thought the pilots would come back for a Landing at New York JFK but they chose to continue their flight bound for Doha. I doubt very much that they actually continued on to Doha. They may have stayed in the air for a while to burn off fuel, but they nearly certainly would have returned to JFK or another local airport. The increased drag alone by having the gear down would make reaching Doha unsafe, if not impossible, not to mention the possibility of further damaging the gear. And the undesirable aerodynamic properties of flying with the gear down makes for an unacceptable risk over that distance.

You are right! I flew to New York via London the day before. I spend about 20 hours planespotting at LHR airport (1 day 14 hours straight!). Then i had this 8 hour flight to New York, went to my Hotel and planned the following day (never been to New York before!). Then i went spotting in New York 2 of my 3 days there (the middle day i was way to tired to go out ;)

There is a procedure to recycle the gears, but it has to be done in a appropriate moment. The plane spotted was bearly reaching the 3rd segment on take off. That was not the timing to do so. The procedure might have worked fine, and they shoot to Doha unhurted...

Agreed, Only 2 companies have the technical and financial power to make the best commercial airliners. Boeing and Airbus. Only 3 companies have the technology to make the best high bypass turbofan engines. General Electric Rolls-Royce Pratt and Whitney All of them have an amazing record in innovation and reliability. Sure new complex products can always have infant problems but let's just appreciate the prowess of these examples of cutting edge technology.

I have seen A330's take off from Melbourne Airport (Aust) and leaving the gear down for sometime (after take off) it's to do with cooling the brakes, asked a mate I know who works for Qantas as an Aircraft Engineer could be for the same reason hot brakes? by keeping in down it will lower the temp reading for the nose gear then it can be retracted.

@georgelurye6274

There is a number of ways you can try to resolve this problem. You can simply put the gear back down again and try to raise it again (often works) or try to reset the circuits for the hydraulics system. In modern airliners, these systems are redundant. If none of those work, you would circle back to the closest airport with sufficient runway length (JFK in this case) and declare an emergency.

This is amazing! Interesting that the pilots didn't land at JFK and instead went for Doha.
@jasonperlmutter7849
@jasonperlmutter7849 7 жыл бұрын
I'm doubtful they did. The gear would fall off above a certain speed, and the drag from the gear would mean the plane would not have enough fuel range. If they did not come back to JFK they most likely diverted to KBOS or something.

Could it be that the gear was hot from a long take off roll and the pilots waited a little longer to retract the gear to let it cool a little before being confined in the enclosed wheel well at above average temps? I've heard and read about this being done from time to time.....

The nose gear wouldn't be so hot. Why would it? It is designed to retract AFTER a take-off roll. Also, no brakes were used, so why would it be that hot? The tires would just have warmed up a bit, that's all.

Of course they will continue to Doha if they manage to get the gear retracted manaully or with an alternate power source. All their techies and maintenance is in Doha at their base. Better then to have the plane there instead of possibly stranded somewhere waiting for parts.
@georgelurye6274
@georgelurye6274 7 жыл бұрын
Safety is #1. If the part fails, you go to the closest airport that can serve you safely. Maintenance is a non-issue. They have fantastic MX facilities at JFK and Qatar flies two flights a day anyway, so they'd just get the parts next day at worst. The gear most likely functioned fine on a repeat or reboot and that was that.

It's ok, one pilot can slow the aircraft down and the other pilot manually crank up the nose gear from the cargo area. If the pilot can't manual crank it up then this will be presumed as an emergency go around landing.

manual "upcranking" is NOT possible - only the manually opening of the uplocks is an option. To allow a 'free fall into the downlocks if hydraulic is U/S !

@PlaneSpottingBerlin

+Hussein Ali it would rip off at high speed making a normal landing impossible + leaving an open hole in the structure would suck out everything loose onboard. Likely the gear would damage more of the aircraft when it rips of and gets sucked into the engines or so. Not a good idea right?

The gear would not be ripped of by flying at high speed but might receive some damage. The aircraft will have a gear limiting speed above which it will not be allowed to be retracted or stowed. On the Boeing 757 this is 270kts or Mach .82, so you could actually operate at normal cruise speed. Leaving the gear down will also not have any effect on pressurising the cabin. The big issue with flying with gear extended is increased drag and hence increased fuel burn. The Boeing 757 has a gear down performance figures in the QRH for in-flight planning. I would be surprised if the aircraft in this video continued all the way to Doha with the nose gear down, if so they must have had a generous amount of fuel on board.

If they did continue their flight, the FAA will definitely fine the pilots and the airlines for violating the regulations. There was an Air France 747 crew that lost an engine after takeoff and decided to continue to Paris. The pilots were banned from flying into the US and the airline received a major fine. It's all about safety. Rather than turning around or diverting to fix the clear issue that could be detrimental to flight, they continued, which goes against a few regulations.

Russell Butler US regulation of foreign operators. If a 'foreign' aircraft enters or exits US airspace with malfunctioning equipment and do not take the necessary actions to fix the issue, they can be fined. Like the example I gave in my original comment. If they managed to get the gear up, that's fine, which I'm sure they did. But if they didn't, they'd be in violation.

Alles und allgemein Potentially, but the increased drag would have led to an increased fuel flow. The QRH, emergency checklist, probably has an in-flight performance table for fuel burn with gear extended, it does on the Boeing I fly, but I would be surprised if they had enough fuel to fly that far with the gear down. Perhaps they were able to get the nose gear retracted when they ran the appropriate check list.

Ugh! No way. There are speed limits when flying with the gear down (maybe altitude limits too, IDK). So unless you want to fly from JFK to Doha at 250 kts and 10,000 feet... Procedures always call for cycling system or manoeuvring. If not return or divert in cases like this.
@akcbcmcb
@akcbcmcb 7 жыл бұрын
TheThirdMan As I previously mentioned in reply to another comment the speed with the gear extended my be quite high, on the B757 which I fly for a living with Jet2 in the UK the max speed with gear extended is 270kts or Mach.82 which are actually above our normal operating speed. There is no altitude limit for gear extension on the 757. We also have gear down fuel flow figures available in the in-flight performance section of the Quick Reference Handbook. Obviously fuel flow would be greatly increased with the gear down and I would be surprised if they had enough to fly so far with the gear extended. I can not comment directly about the A350 as I have never flown Airbus. kind regards.

Slimjimtheman98 As I mentioned earlier it might be possible to fly at cruise speed with gear down, on the 757 I fly the limit is 270kts or Mach.82 which is below normal cruise speed. The big problem is do they have enough fuel for the increased fuel burn due to the greater drag from the nose gear. Again in the 757 we have in-flight performance tables to calculate fuel burn with gear down.
@georgelurye6274
@georgelurye6274 7 жыл бұрын
Actually, on most aircraft, the limit is below cruise speed. Considering fuel limitations due to drag and the distance to DOH, why would they? That's not the airline's operating procedure anyway. Why risk your job and so many lives?
