A380 attempting to land at Manchester in crosswind. Appeared to touch down about half way along the runway and had to abort -

This is a very nice catch. The pilot was clearly sensing the winds, it kept him from touching down as intended, but he was so close you can clearly see smoke twice from wheels making contact. But then he realizes he is beyond the defined touchdown zone extending from the threshold of the runway, and he is right to abort and go around, rather than risking running out of runway before he can decelerate after landing beyond the threshold. The A380 is a big plane, and heavy, so he did the right thing.

There was quite obviously too much gravy aboard the aircraft for the pilot to make a safe landing and so the landing was aborted. Usually this is used up during in-flight service, however in some cases there can be a surplus. It is against CAA regulations to dump gravy in British airspace. The aircraft went into the hold and passengers were I am told offered the opportunity to indulge in a roast beef dinner with roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. This reduced the gravy surplus to within safe landing limits and the aircraft was able to make a safe landing later on that day.

No! It had too much lift as it approached in direct wind.

Looks like an initial cross wind which changed to a tailwind which may have increased his air speed thus pushing the aircraft further down the runway, once it bounced it was inevitably past the touch down zone and may not have had enough runway to land safely. Always best to go around. Great capture though, not every day one sees this of an A380.

as a pilot myself i can assure you that this is not a complete touch and go. in training, a "touch and go" is when you fully land, retract your flaps, reset the trim, add enough take off power, roll down the runway to take off speed and lift off again. this pilot came in too fast causing excessive lift on the wings. As a result, the aircraft would not land. that explains the bouncy landings. the pilot ran out of "required" landing space so had no choice but to power up, take off again and make a go around. this is more of a aborted landing.
@iwantlotsofcows10 жыл бұрын
And of course in an A380, not to mention nearly any relatively large aircraft, you have time to touch down and retract your flaps before restoring take off power and correct flaps before taking back off just to be a "touch and go". You think if they were coming in too fast they would still "touch and go"? or do you think they are sufficiently trained to know how coming in too fast would affect the landing? Listen carefully, you can hear the wind gusting. This isn't a light aircraft. Also you claim to be a pilot and looking at your account you have not one video of you in, near, or around any aircraft, other than an upload of a Dash-8 taking off. You have not subscribed to anything that any pilot may have interests in. I have no other reason but to believe that you were either drunk, dreaming, or just bullshitting when you wrote that comment.

Either or its a comment section. Good comment or nasty; it really doesn't matter. I'm not here to post diplomas or licenses or videos of myself flying. I don't subscribe to what the masses of society do. God bless u anyway

Although Manchester is a major International Airport with lots of traffic including many jumbo's, runway 23R doesn't offer a lot of runway to play with even with the extra overrun at the end. It looked like to me, perhaps because of the wind and other factors, he went too far down the runway before the mains touched and made a very wise decision to abort before his airplane carried him and its passengers off the far end of the runway. Excellent job, cockpit crew!

Incorrect. The pilot is the one who calls the Go-Around, not a computer. Once the human decision is made to Go Around, and the initial manual Go-Around procedures are performed and the pilot calls for the aircraft to be reconfigured for the Go-Around, then depending on the operating limitations of the aircraft, the autopilot can be re-engaged and automation takes over. But certainly, no aircraft would ever be designed where a computer makes the decision to Go-Around instead of the pilot.

You are right about the crosswind gust affecting this landing but the actual reason the plane overshot is that with such a large wing area, it takes very little for the plane to achieve lift. That gust basically prevented the plane from touching down by giving it extra lift.You can clearly see it at 0:33, the pilot raises the nose to allow the main gear to make contact and the plane skips and then remains several feet off the ground until the crew decides to go around at 0:42.

You're 100% right in that most people (including myself) dont know much about aircraft or safety procedures. When I commented I'd be worried on that plane, i'ts simply the fear of not knowing whats happening. It was not a criticism of the pilot. You guys do a job most of us haven't got the skill or guts to do. Liken the feeling to being a passenger in a car. You see danger ahead, you want to react, you can"t do anything and hope the driver does the right thing. Hope this clears up any confusion
@Flight23111 жыл бұрын
Between 1.35 and 1.41 the aircraft encounters ground effect and as has been said, crosswind + little extra speed and she keeps on flying. The autothrottle on a 737 would have cut to idle at 24 feet, but thats a much smaller aircraft! Great video, very interesting.
@ThePilot31411 жыл бұрын
That is totally correct! Due the gusting up crosswinds you have to approach with higher speed, and probably you caught a strong wind from the front with the result that the plane starts "flying" again and THEN you overshot the decision point for latest touch down ........ so you HAEVE to stop the landing and go around. After three or four times this procedure also the P.I.C. becomes a little bit nervous!
@ianhamilton3969 жыл бұрын
Been in a few go arounds and I would much rather do this than having the pilots dealing with a runway that ends as well as whatever else was causing the situation in the first place.

You're the only one. It is a disaster of unmitigated proportion for Airbus. They have no orders. With what they have invested, they should break even in the year 2035 and will begin to show a profit by 2040. Hub to hub aviation is a dying idea. Point to point is the future, and Boeing bet the farm on that idea, and won. There are over 1300 firm orders with options for hundreds more. The A380 is being made at one per month just to keep the pipeline alive. It is a nice looking, high tech beast, but not practical today
@nntflow70587 жыл бұрын
The new model is not hub to hub anymore. It's Congestion to Congestion for A380. LAX, JFK, SFO, NRT, LHR, DXB, CDG, FRA, SYD, MEL, SIN, PEK, HKG, PVG, SZX, CGZ, CAN, etc. So it's alive and well. For now. Until it reached 20 years mark and it got to be replaced somehow.

My interpretation of this is that the aircraft was supposed to touch down at about 0:34, but got a huge amount of "ground effect" which popped it back up to 20-30ft altitude. By the time the pilot recovered this and got the wheels back down at 0:43 he was running short on runway, so did a go-around.
